Children fancy themselves floating with butterflies, dancing with bears and singing with the Man in the Moon. Entertainment and activities planned for the Lollipoplooza Children’s Festival will feed those vivid imaginations to make children and adults feel as if they are sitting on a cloud or ‘round a campfire.

Well-known entertainers from stage, song and screen will share musical stories with a message. From old favorites to new tales of childhood, parenthood, life and love, the tunes performed by these singers, songwriters and musicians will arouse curiosity, inspire creativity, induce laughter and capture hearts.

Lollipoplooza spotlights national acts such as Tom Chapin, Red Grammer, Rick Hubbard, Prairie Orchid, and costumed characters including Garfield and Jeffrey the Giraffe – the Toys R Us mascot. A live pony carousel, an animal petting zoo, inflatable “rides,” marble tournaments, and kite-flying (with free kites for kids) will also keep the children and their families entertained. The Lock 3 Live! Summer Arts Experience will spark artistic interests. “Safety Town” personnel will explain fire safety and demonstrate fire trucks, and friendly policemen will introduce children to K-9 dogs. Parents can also register their kids for Child identification.

The festival runs from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. A $10.00 admission fee includes all concerts and entertainment associated with this event. Tokens are sold for inflatable rides for kids, but admission is free for children under 48 inches. Bring a canned food item to Lock 3 park to benefit Akron/Canton Food Bank, and you can buy one ticket at full price and get a second for half price.

Cash-only tickets are sold at the Lock 3 Live! gates 30 minutes before show time. For advance tickets, call the Akron Civic Theatre Box Office at (330) 253-2488 between 11:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday. Tickets are also available at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall Ticket Office at (330) 972-7570, or through Ticketmaster Centers or Charge-By-Phone at (330) 945-9400.

There is free parking in the O’Neil’s Deck (entrance off State Street), Cascade Parking Deck (enter from Quaker Street) and Landmark Deck (entrance off Bowery Street), and paid parking in the Summit County Parking Deck (entrance off High Street). For event information and updates, visit http://www.lock3live.com, or call the Civic Theatre Info Line at (330) 535-3178.

Lock 3 Live! park is located downtown on Main Street next to Akron Civic Theatre, and operated by The University of Akron’s management team and E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall.

The English Language Institute (ELI), UA's English program for international students, invites UA students, faculty, and staff to participate in its Conversation Partners Program. Through this program, the ELI pairs an international student who is learning English in our program with an American partner for one hour of informal conversation per week. ELI students come from all over the world and bring with them a wide variety of educational, political, cultural, religious, and linguistic backgrounds. This program is a wonderful opportunity to learn about another country and culture AND to make an international student feel welcome here in Akron.

Please announce this program to your classes as well! Sign-up for the Fall 2004 Conversation Partners Program begins Monday, August 30 in the ELI Office in Olin Hall Room 302. The one-hour weekly meetings will run from the week of Monday, September 20 through Friday, November 19.
