The University of Akron announces its Fourth Biennial
Graduate Gender Symposium

March 30-31, 2012

Call For Proposals

The Graduate Committee for Research on Women/Gender (Grad-CROW) at The University of Akron is pleased to announce an upcoming symposium showcasing graduate students’ original research in all fields of women’s and/or gender studies. Our theme, “Gendered Worlds” is purposively a broad and inclusive one, in order to provide opportunities for graduate students working on a variety of topics and within many disciplines to explore women’s lives and/or the various and often contested meanings of gender, past and present. This symposium is open to any student enrolled in a graduate program whose work centers on women and/or gender. While we expect most women’s and gender studies applicants will be contributing to fields associated with the Humanities and Social Sciences, we especially want to encourage those graduates enrolled in MFA and performance art programs to apply and will work with them to find appropriate ways to present their creative work.

The symposium will kick off at 6 pm on Friday, March 30 with a complimentary dinner for participants, followed by a full day of presentations and discussion on Saturday, March 31.

There is no participation fee. Presenters whose proposals are selected will be treated to two nights (March 30-31) of hotel accommodations at the historic Quaker Inn in downtown Akron, as well as dinner on Friday night and breakfast/lunch on Saturday. Presenters coming from out of state may also apply for a grant to help offset the cost of air travel.

Proposals should be 300 words or less, and should include title of presentation, presenter’s name, university and department affiliation, email, phone number, and mailing address. Also please be sure to indicate whether you intend to apply for our air travel subsidy (if so, a grant application will be sent to you).

Proposals are due December 31, 2011.

Email proposals to Natalie Hall, Vice-President of Grad-CROW, at nah28@zips.uakron.edu.

Those selected will be notified via email by February 1, 2012.

Ever feel like you got meal swipes, but NO need for junk food? Ever wonder how you as a poor college student can help those who aren't as well off as you? Well, if so, I got just the thing!

Join in the cause to brighten someone's day by doing what you normally do every week. Use some of those EXTRA meal swipes (worth $5 at the Zees stores) to collect some food for the poor. Just BUY, BAG, and DROP any NON-PERISHABLE food items in the boxes in the Zees stores. They are collected and taken to the nearest food pantry.

Serving with Swipes: a great way to help those in need!

The Meaning of Life Without God Nov. 2
5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Those who do not believe in God are often accused of being adrift in a sea of moral relativism with no purpose or meaning in life. We disagree.

The Secular Student Alliance is pleased to welcome Philosophy Department professor Dr. Priscilla Sakezles for a discussion on the meaning of life and how it might relate to secular worldviews.

Can there be meaning without God? How Is there actually an innate meaning in life? If so, what? If not, why? We'd love to have your voice in our conversation on these questions and more!

About the SSA:
The Secular Student Alliance at the University of Akron is a student group for atheists, agnostics, humanists, and skeptics. We aim to provide a community for students who are non-religious or may be questioning their supernatural beliefs. We encourage humanist values rather than religious dogma, and we try to demonstrate that people can be good without God. We encourage skeptical inquiry of all supernatural and religious claims.

If you are looking for a community of atheists, or if you've ever doubted the methods of faith healers, ghost hunters, psychics, or astrologers, this may be the place for you. If you want to learn more about us, don't hesitate to shoot us a message or come to one of our meetings! We're always up for some good discussion, and we have a lot of fun things planned for the semester! Check us out on OrgSync to see what we've been up to! https://orgsync.com/36425/chapter

Play by Eugene O’Neill opening Nov. 3 at UA

(Akron, OH) — The Great God Brown by Eugene O’Neill opens Nov. 3 at The University of Akron’s Sandefur Theatre in Guzzetta Hall, 139 Buchtel Ave.

Presented by the UA Theatre Program and directed by Professor James Slowiak, performances are:
Nov. 3-5 and Nov. 10-12 at 8 p.m.
Nov. 6 at 2 p.m.
Pre-show discussions are at 7:15 p.m. on Nov. 4 and Nov. 11 in room 299 of Guzzetta Hall.

Tickets are $12 general admission; $10 for seniors and UA faculty, staff and alumni; and $6 for students. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more. For more information, call (330) 972-7895 or visit http://www.uakron.edu/dtaa.

Written in 1926, The Great God Brown is one of O’Neill’s most mystical and expressionistic works. It draws inspiration from Jungian psychology, Nietzschean philosophy, Greek myth, and Asian and Christian religious sources, creating a world in which the denial of one’s true self can lead to devastating consequences.

The Great God Brown is the second part of UA’s Dionysos Project, a three-year exploration of the Dionysos myth in performance. Last year’s UA production of A Mouthful of Birds was the first play in the project.
