UA offers counseling services for students
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Students visit the professional staff in the on-campus Counseling Center for a variety of reasons:

  • coping with a personal crisis;
  • deciding on a major and a career direction or in improving study skills or overcoming learning problems;
  • dealing with personal issues — self-esteem, sexuality, ethnic identity, alcohol/drugs; and
  • family conflicts or relationship issues.

Sometimes choices appear so limited that every possible outcome feels like more discomfort and unhappiness. An objective professional can often help you during these times. The Counseling Center provides a quiet place where you can discuss your concerns in private with an experienced professional.

There is no charge to eligible students except for fees associated with LD testing and nominal fees for career and psychological tests.

The Counseling Center is located in Simmons Hall (Rooms 306 and 304), near the center of campus. Make an appointment by calling 330-972-7082 or 330-972-7083 or by stopping in the center. Learn more.

New Rules Regarding Disability Parking Spaces on Campus
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Beginning this spring semester, anyone who wishes to utilize disability parking spaces on campus will be required to register their state placard (or disability license plate) with the Office of Parking Services. Those who do so will be issued UA accessibility parking permits instead of the regular faculty/staff, commuter or resident student permits. There is no change in the cost of parking, only to the type of permits being issued. This new rule is intended to curb the abuse of state issued placards and open up more of these spaces to those who truly need them.

No one will be able to register a placard that belongs to another individual. An optional step has been added to the parking permit application forms, allowing you to apply for an accessibility parking permit. Upon completion of the standard parking permit application you will be asked to proceed to the accessibility parking permit application to submit information about your state disability placard or plate registration. To complete your application for an accessibility parking permit you must provide us with a copy of your state disability placard or plate registration in our office or via fax. Once this has been completed your permit will be distributed in the usual way.

If you have already submitted one of the above permit applications, but did not encounter the accessibility application please fill out a standalone application.

Employees who already have permits that are valid for the entire academic year should fill out the above standalone application, and upon verification of the placard registration an accessibility permit will be sent via campus mail. We simply ask that you mail your regular permit back to us within two weeks of receiving the new one.

Visitors utilizing temporary permits or disability parking meters will not need to register, and will not be affected by this change.

For further information please visit our website, at www.uakron.edu/parking.

Junk Food Got U Down?

Ever feel like you got meal swipes, but NO need for junk food? Ever wonder how you as a poor college student can help those who aren't as well off as you? Well, if so, I got just the thing!

Join in the cause to brighten someone's day by doing what you normally do every week. Use some of those EXTRA meal swipes (worth $5 at the Zees stores) to collect some food for the poor. Just BUY, BAG, and DROP any NON-PERISHABLE food items in the boxes in the Zees stores. They are collected and taken to the nearest food pantry.

Serving with Swipes: a great way to help those in need!

Research Participants Needed for a Study for People with Low Back Pain

Annette Mitzel, MSN, CNS, RN – the Director of the Nursing Center for Community Health and a candidate for her Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree – is conducting a back-pain study comparing two potential treatments. Volunteers are needed for the study.

You are eligible for this study if you are:
• 18 years of age or older;
• experiencing low back pain longer than 1 month and less than 6 months duration;
• able to lat flat on your back for 20 minutes;
• having pain that you would rate as 3 or greater on a scale of 0 to 10 with 0 meaning no pain and 10 meaning excruciating pain; and
• weigh less than 300 lbs (FIR mat and support table are unable to handle more than 300 pounds).

You are ineligible to participate if:
• you are currently in treatment with a chiropractor or other healthcare provider involved with manipulation of the back, in physical therapy, or pain management, e.g., acupuncture, ultrasound and/or massage;
• you have had a surgical intervention for back pain, unrelated to the current pain episode, within the last 6 months.

As a participant in the study, you will be asked to lay on one of two heating sources for low back pain, either a heating pad or the far infrared radiant heat mat, for 20 minutes, twice a week, for 3 weeks. The selection of heating source will be random. At each session you will be asked several questions about pain, stress, and comfort.

If interested, please contact Annette Mitzel, at 330-972-6698 or annett1@uakron.edu.

Want to broaden your horizon? Would you like to meet international students at the The University of Akron? Are you interested in helping a student or two develop their English fluency?

The English Language Institute (ELI)---the UA's English program for international students---invites UA students, faculty, and staff to participate in its 2012 Spring Conversation Partner Program. In this program, we pair one or two international students who are learning English in our program with an American partner---(this could be you)---for one hour of informal conversation per week. You meet with the same student(s) every week.

ELI students come from all over the world and bring with them a wide variety of educational, political, cultural, religious, and linguistic backgrounds. This program is a great opportunity to learn about another country and culture AND to make an international student feel welcome here in Akron. The one-hour weekly meetings run for approximately 10-12 weeks of the semester.

Sign-up for the Spring 2012 Conversation Partners Program first thing in January. We will begin accepting applications on January 2 in the ELI Office in Olin Hall 302. Applications received before February 1 will be greatly appreciated! Does this sound interesting? Call 330-972-7544 for more information.
