All new students are invited to participate in the fifth-annual Akron Traditions from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29 at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall.

The doors will open at 1 p.m. and the UA Marching Band will be on stage at 1:30 p.m. The convocation will begin at 2 p.m. with University President Luis Proenza and other UA leaders welcoming the new students, followed by guest speaker and local author Joyce Dyer, who wrote the 2004 University College summer reading selection, "Gum-Dipped: A Daughter Remembers Rubber Town."

Welcome Fest will immediately follow in the lobby areas of EJ Thomas Hall. Join us for free food, giveaways and pictures with Zippy.

GO Games are the Grand Opening games of the Student Union. The GO games were created to give you, the student, an opportunity to explore the building and the variety of services available to you. The object of the game is to go to all areas listed on the daily question sheets available at the Information Center and get all of the questions answered (6 each day) to be eligible for the daily grand prize drawings of a $250 book scholarship from Barnes & Noble Bookstore on Saturday, a Dell Latitude D 600 Laptop Computer from Computer Solutions on Monday, and a $500 gift certificate good any food place on campus and a $250 gift certificate good at Roberson Cafe Sponsored by Dining Services and the Union Market on Tuesday. Many Student Services Are Moving to Simmons Hall

Simmons Hall, at the corner of East Buchtel Avenue and College Street (next to the North Campus Parking Deck), is the new student affairs building. Throughout September, many offices that provide services to students will be moving into Simmons Hall. Here is the moving schedule:
• Center for Career Management will move from the College of Business Administration 260 and Schrank Hall 153 to Simmons Hall 301 on Sept. 2.
• Counseling and Testing Center will move from Schrank Hall 152 to Simmons Hall 306 on Sept. 3.
• Admissions will move from 381 Buchtel Hall to Simmons Hall 109 on Sept. 7.
• The Office of New Student Orientation will move from Carroll Hall 56 to Simmons Hall 209 on Sept. 9.
• The Office of Accessibility will move from the Student and Administrative Services (SAS) Building to Simmons Hall 105 on Sept. 10.
• A satellite Zip Card office will open in Simmons Hall 103 by Sept. 13. The main Zip Card office will remain in the Student Union.
• The University College dean’s office will move from the SAS Building to Simmons Hall 302 on Sept. 13.
• The Academic Advisement Center will move from the SAS Building to Simmons Hall 205 from Sept. 13-17.
• Financial Aid and Student Employment will move from the SAS Building to Simmons Hall 202 from Sept. 17-21.

The University of Akron has purchased a site license for Webdrive, which integrates WebDAV servers (ZipSpace) into the Windows desktop by mapping them to a network drive letter. Files are transferred by simply saving them to a drive letter.

Monday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the Women's Studies Program will be offering both a one credit lecture series for students and an open lecture event for the public and/or campus students. Each lecture will consist of a woman activist working to promote change in our society.

Topics of the event include:
On Monday, September 27, woman musician "ANNE E. DECHANT" will be speaking on her activism in the music industry. Dr. Priscilla Smith, Associate Professor for the School of Social Work, will be speaking on peace activism. Ms. Gail McWilliams from the Akron Area NOW, Ms. Deborah Calhoun from American Friends Service Committee, and Ms. Joni Christian, former Vice President of the Akron Area Pride Collective, will be speaking on transgendered Women. Ms. Deana Hanley from the Department of Political Science will be speaking on Women and the criminal justice system.

Students signing up for the one credit class must attend both lecture (Monday 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.) and discussion dates (Wednesdays 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.). The course number to sign up for the lecture class is (74951) 1840:490-980.

On Saturday, September 4, from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the Canal Days Celebration at Lock 3 Live! park commemorates the history and preservation of the Ohio & Erie Canal Corridor. Activities include a marble exhibit, pioneer crafts, a glass blowing demonstration, Ohio Canal tours, children's activities, festival foods, and live musical entertainment with folk favorites The Kingston Trio, Glenn Yarbrough & The Folk Reunion, Weavermania, Lee Murdock, and Brian Henke.

A $10.00 admission charge includes all concerts and entertainment associated with this event, except for inflatable “rides” for children, where tokens are sold. The Eta Chapter of Delta Gamma invites all faculty, staff and students to participate in the chapter's Tee-Off fund-raiser at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2 at Chenoweth Golf Course. The event will benefit the Vision Support Services of Akron and Delta Gamma’s National Foundation, Sight Conservation.
