With students away from their rental homes for winter break, University police have increased burglary-prevention activities in the neighborhoods near campus. This includes walking around the rental properties registered in UA's free Away from Home checks.

During one of the checks, police spotted two unidentified males attempting to break into homes off-campus in the 600 block of Sumner Street (see on map).In both cases, no break-in occurred, but police were unable to catch the perpetrators. If you have information about the incidents, please call University police at 330-972-2911.

There is still time to have an officer check your rental home. Learn more about the FREE Away-from-Home Check and sign up.

As always, you can submit a tip confidentially to police by texting it to 274637 (CRIMES), and beginning the message with the keyword ZIPTIP. You may alsosubmit a tip confidentially online to provide more detailed information, including images.

They say good things come in three’s. Well at Akron, good things come in five’s, as in five basketball games in seven days!

The action kicks off on Thursday, Dec 15 when the Men’s Basketball team takes on Arkansas- Pine Bluff at 7 pm in the JAR. There will a mascot scrimmage at halftime with your favorite mascot, Zippy, along with some other mascots from the area.

The men return to the JAR on Saturday, Dec. 17 when they take on Florida A&M at 4 pm. It’s “Winter Weekend” and there will be a craft table in the lobby to make holiday crafts. The first 100 fans will receive a holiday ornament.

On Sunday, the Women’s Basketball team gets in on the fun when they play host to Youngstown State from right down I-76. The game is at 2 pm and the holiday craft table will stick around for an encore performance. The first 100 fans will receive a holiday ornament.

The men’s team gets their shot at Youngstown State on Monday, Dec. 19 at 7 pm. The annual Teddy Bear Toss will take place at halftime, so bring a Teddy Bear to toss onto the court to be donated to local families during the holiday season. A toy drive will also take place outside the JAR to benefit local youth.

The jam-packed week of basketball takes a break right after the men’s team takes on North Carolina A&T on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 7 pm.

Students have a chance to purchase tickets for their families and friends for these four Men’s Basketball games for only $5 by showing their Zip Card at the JAR Ticket Office up to two hours prior to tipoff. Tickets can also be purchased during regular business hours at the Chima Athletics Ticket Office located at InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field.
