Annette Mitzel, MSN, CNS, RN – the Director of the Nursing Center for Community Health and a candidate for her Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree – is conducting a back-pain study comparing two potential treatments. Volunteers are needed for the study.

You are eligible for this study if you are:
• 18 years of age or older;
• experiencing low back pain longer than 1 month and less than 6 months duration;
• able to lat flat on your back for 20 minutes;
• having pain that you would rate as 3 or greater on a scale of 0 to 10 with 0 meaning no pain and 10 meaning excruciating pain; and
• weigh less than 300 lbs (FIR mat and support table are unable to handle more than 300 pounds).

You are ineligible to participate if:
• you are currently in treatment with a chiropractor or other healthcare provider involved with manipulation of the back, in physical therapy, or pain management, e.g., acupuncture, ultrasound and/or massage;
• you have had a surgical intervention for back pain, unrelated to the current pain episode, within the last 6 months.

As a participant in the study, you will be asked to lay on one of two heating sources for low back pain, either a heating pad or the far infrared radiant heat mat, for 20 minutes, twice a week, for 3 weeks. The selection of heating source will be random. At each session you will be asked several questions about pain, stress, and comfort.

If interested, please contact Annette Mitzel, at 330-972-6698 or annett1@uakron.edu.

Guidance for military service students who must miss class
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University is a “Veteran Friendly” institution and recognizes its obligations to our students who serve in the military. Although there is a University-level expectation that all students will attend their classes at the designated meeting times, syllabi should clearly outline specific attendance policies for each course.

For students who currently serve in the military and will miss classes for short-term military leave or for military training exercises, we recommend that they contact their instructors as soon as they become aware of this so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

In the rare case that unresolved issues arise due to absences from a course because of service in the military, we recommend that the student contact the chair of the department through which the course is offered. If the student is still not satisfied with the result, then the dean of the college and, if necessary, the Office of Academic Affairs may be contacted.

The Military Services Center is in Simmons Hall 120 and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, to assist. Students are also welcome to contact the center by telephone at 330-972-7838 or by e-mail at veterans@uakron.edu for assistance with any issues encountered here at UA.

Virtual Lab: Access applications anytime, anywhere
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Using cloud technology, The University of Akron now offers selected computer applications via a virtual computer lab to all students and faculty. This “always on” environment means you can access these programs anytime from anywhere using almost any device.
For instructions on how to access UA's virtual lab, go to www.uakron.edu/dts/virtual-lab/index.dot.

Currently UA students can access five statistical and engineering programs. More are planned for the future. Current offerings are:

• Autocad 2012
• SPSS Statistics 19
• SAS 9.2 (64-bit)
• JMP 9
• Minitab 16

At present there are 100 desktops available. If you cannot gain access to a virtual desktop, you will get a message saying there are "no desktops available". You will need to check back later.

The new virtual lab does not replace any current on-campus access. It only expands access.

More information is available at www.uakron.edu/dts/virtual-lab/index.dot.

If you have questions, contact the Support Desk at 330-972-6888.
