    Research Participants Needed for a Study for People with Low Back Pain

    Annette Mitzel, MSN, CNS, RN – the Director of the Nursing Center for Community Health and a candidate for her Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree – is conducting a back-pain study comparing two potential treatments. Volunteers are needed for the study.

    You are eligible for this study if you are:
    • 18 years of age or older;
    • experiencing low back pain longer than 1 month and less than 6 months duration;
    • able to lat flat on your back for 20 minutes;
    • having pain that you would rate as 3 or greater on a scale of 0 to 10 with 0 meaning no pain and 10 meaning excruciating pain; and
    • weigh less than 300 lbs (FIR mat and support table are unable to handle more than 300 pounds).

    You are ineligible to participate if:
    • you are currently in treatment with a chiropractor or other healthcare provider involved with manipulation of the back, in physical therapy, or pain management, e.g., acupuncture, ultrasound and/or massage;
    • you have had a surgical intervention for back pain, unrelated to the current pain episode, within the last 6 months.

    As a participant in the study, you will be asked to lay on one of two heating sources for low back pain, either a heating pad or the far infrared radiant heat mat, for 20 minutes, twice a week, for 3 weeks. The selection of heating source will be random. At each session you will be asked several questions about pain, stress, and comfort.

    If interested, please contact Annette Mitzel, at 330-972-6698 or annett1@uakron.edu.

    Want to broaden your horizon? Would you like to meet international students at the University of Akron? Are you interested in helping a student or two develop their English fluency?

    The English Language Institute (ELI)---the UA's English program for international students---invites UA students, faculty, and staff to participate in its 2012 Spring Conversation Partner Program. Through this program, the ELI pairs one or two international students who are learning English in our program with an American partner---(this could be you)--- for one hour of informal conversation per week. You meet with the same student(s) every week.

    ELI students come from all over the world and bring with them a wide variety of educational, political, cultural, religious, and linguistic backgrounds. This program is a great opportunity to learn about another country and culture AND to make an international student feel welcome here in Akron. The one-hour weekly meetings run for approximately 8-12 weeks of the semester.
    Sign-up for the Spring 2012 Conversation Partner Program first thing in January. We will begin accepting applications on January 2 in the ELI Office in Olin Hall 302. Applications received before February 1 will be greatly appreciated! Does this sound interesting? Call 330 972-7544 for more information.

    What is a gentleman? He opens the door for you without expecting anything in return, he shovels a neighbor’s car out of the snow, he helps an older woman carry her groceries, he treats you like the lady you are, he is confident but not conceited.

    Do you know a gentleman who fits this description? Follow the link below to nominate him:

    The Office of International Programs (OIP) will sponsor International Week, March 1 - 8. We will hold our next two planning meetings on Friday, February 3, and Friday, February 10, from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. in the OIP (Polsky 483). If you are intrested in helping us with the events and activities during the week, please come to one or both of these meetings!

    We would like to have:

    1. Interactive presentations: such as dance lessons, calligraphy lessons, origami lessons, games, language lessons, etc.

    2. Cultural presentations: such as display tables in the piano lounge of the Student Union, pictures, clothes to try on, writing names for students in different languages, music, slide shows, etc. We would like to have regional days, so more countries & cultures can be represented. For example: Arabic/Middle East Day, Africa Day, Latin America Day, East & Southeast Asia Day, West Asia Day, Western Culture Day, etc.

    3. Educational Presentations: This year, we would like to have some educational discussions about the “Arab Spring.” Many political and social changes have occurred in the past year. We would love to have the perspective of nationals from those countries or people who have recently visited those countries about what those changes mean to them. If they or someone they know participated in any of the movements for change, etc. What happened? What is occurring today? What is the hope for the future?

    Everyone is welcome to participate! If you cannot attend a whole meeting, please feel free to attend part. Also, if you cannot attend meetings on Fridays, please contact Rebekka Reusser at 330-972-6194 or rreusse@uakron.edu, to make other arrangements.

    The Pan African Studies and the Undergraduate Student Government invite you to join us on February 6th for the showing of The Black Power Mixture 1967 - 1975.

    The Black Power Mixtape 1967 - 1975 mobilizes a treasure trove of 16mm material shot by Swedish journalists who came to the US drawn by stories of urban unrest and revolution. Gaining access to many of the leaders of the Black Power Movement, the filmmakers captured them in intimate moments and remarkably unguarded interviews. Thirty years later, this lush collection was found languishing in the basement of Swedish Television.

    The Center for Literacy through The University of Akron’s College of Education (COE) along with This City Reads! (TCR) is seeking to commit 100,000 people to read for 30 minutes on Wednesday, February 8. The COE and the Center for Literacy are actively recruiting groups and organizations to help raise awareness for this day of literacy.

    In 2011, 93,789 people reported their reading in Summit County. The Center for Literacy is steadfast in spreading the word on this literacy event. Pledge your intention to read on February 8 by one of the following options:

    • Organize an event with your group or organization to collect pledges and/or food and books for the Akron-Canton Regional Food bank.
    • Click ‘Like’ on The University of Akron College of Education Center for Literacy Facebook page to pledge.
    • Join the Reading Flash Mob in the UA Student Union Piano Lounge between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Feb. 8.
    • Visit http://www.thiscityreads.org/xpledge2.asp and register as a group or individual with “UA” prior to your name (ex. UA Jane Doe). Registration goes through Feb. 9.

    This year's reading theme is "Feed the Body, Feed the Mind". TCR will be collecting food and new or gently used book donations to benefit the Akron-Canton Regional Food bank. The books and food will be delivered to families and individuals in need.

    TCR was established nine years ago to send a message that reading is important to Akron and Summit County. Reading is not just a class in school but it is the key to success. Children learn what is important by watching what adults do. People read all the time – in classes, at work, for leisure, e-mails, texting, playing computer games, developing our playlists, watching sport events, enjoying entertainment and even driving. Out of this conviction grew the Annual Day of Reading and a goal to have Akron identified as the Reading Capital of the World.
