Class withdrawal policy updates
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Please remind your students that the University revised its rules for dropping or withdrawing from a course, effective fall 2011.

Graduate and undergraduate students may withdraw from a class between Tuesday, Jan. 24, and Sunday, Feb. 26, through ZipLine (no signatures required). Students who do not follow the procedures for dropping or withdrawing will receive a grade in the class.

Students who withdraw will have a "WD" appear on their transcript. A withdrawal may affect financial aid, eligibility for on-campus employment and eligibility for insurance. Students’ advisers can provide more details.

For undergraduate students only, withdrawals are limited:

• Undergraduate students may withdraw from up to two courses in their first 32 credits, and up to two more times in the next 32 credits. This applies to new students who began their studies at UA in fall 2011, or thereafter, and to all continuing students attending in Fall 2013 or subsequent semesters.

• Undergraduate students may withdraw from the same course only twice. This applies to new students who began their studies at UA in fall 2011, or thereafter, and to all continuing students attending in Fall 2013 or subsequent semesters.

Exceptions may be made for extraordinary nonacademic reasons (e.g., medical treatment or convalescence, military service). Students’ advisers can provide more details.

The new rules are intended to help students graduate on time. Students who withdraw on a regular basis generally do not finish their programs and earn degrees. Students who withdraw frequently tend to deplete their financial aid too early. Further, a pattern of withdrawals may send the wrong message to potential employers or to graduate schools.

Reminder: Parking guidelines for individuals with disabilities
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Beginning this semester, people who use disability parking spaces on campus are required to register their state placard (or disability license plate) with the Office of Parking Services.
Those who do will be issued UA accessibility parking permits instead of the regular faculty/staff, commuter or resident student permits. This new permit is to be displayed in addition to (not in place of) the state-issued placard. There is no change in the cost of parking, only in the type of permit issued. The new permits must be obtained by March 1, 2012 as strict enforcement of the new requirements will begin at that time.
Visit the Parking Services website to find guidelines and a link to the accessibility parking permit application.
Upon verification of the placard registration, an accessibility permit will be sent via campus mail. We simply ask that you mail your regular permit to Parking Services within two weeks of receiving the new one.
For further information, visit Parking Services.

What is a gentleman? He opens the door for you without expecting anything in return, he shovels a neighbor’s car out of the snow, he helps an older woman carry her groceries, he treats you like the lady you are, he is confident but not conceited.

Do you know a gentleman who fits this description? Follow the link below to nominate him:

Recyclemania Feb. 7 - March 31
6:00 am - 12:00 am
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Attention university students, faculty, and staff: It's time to challenge our wasteful tendencies and get serious about recycling. This year's international Recyclemania competition is under way and schools across the country, and beyond, will be competing to reduce the most amount of garbage from their respective waste streams. In addition to the Recyclemania competition, Kent State has challenged the University of Akron to a supplemental recycling grudge match dubbed the “Braggin Wheel”. With a consolidated effort, we can extinguish the Flash and substantially reduce our impact on the environment. The competition has begun and will run until March 31st. The winner in each of the seven Recyclemania competition categories will be recognized in a national press release and the standings will be posted on the competition’s website. Winning schools will also receive a trophy made entirely of recycled materials. So remember, in order to win we must reduce our waste, reuse appropriate materials, and then recycle. Let’s add some Green to the Blue and Gold. For more information on Recyclemania or what materials the university is currently recycling, please visit

Announcement
Research for Lunch

Dr. Elizabeth Mancke, Professor of History, will be presenting her research on Monday, February 13, 2012 from noon to 1 p.m. in the ITL Seminar Room, Leigh Hall Room 414. The title of the research is “European Geographies of Maritime Space on the Eve of Overseas Expansion.”

This talk is drawn from the first chapter of a book manuscript entitled Imperium Unbound: European Expansion and the Making of Modern Geopolitics. It reconsiders the deep history of human maritime navigation, ca. 40,000 BCE to 1450 CE, with an emphasis on how maritime practices affected the configuration of political, military, and economic power in western Europe. It argues that unlike most of the sedentary societies of Eurasia, which were concerned with the defense of frontiers facing the steppe regions, western Europeans were concerned with defending against seaborne invasions. As a consequence, western European rulers were unusually concerned with access to transport resources of merchants, who, in turn, had a greater influence over political power than did merchants in other parts of the world. Thus on the eve of overseas expansion, Europeans had developed many of the ideological, political, and cultural tools project power across vast maritime spaces.

Bring your lunch and meet Dr. Mancke, learn about her research endeavors and show support for one of your colleagues. RSVP Mary Dingler, Office of Research Services and Sponsored Programs, or by phone at x7774.
