In fall 2011, the University revised its rules for dropping or withdrawing from a course.

For graduate and undergraduate students:

  • You may drop a class up to Monday, Jan. 23. A "drop" will not appear on your transcript. The class simply "disappears."

  • You may withdraw from a class between Jan. 24 and Sunday, Feb. 26 through ZipLine (no signatures required).

  • If you do not drop or withdraw, you will receive a grade in the class.

  • If you withdraw, a "WD" will appear on your transcript. You should know that a withdrawal may affect your financial aid, eligibility for on-campus employment and eligibility for insurance. Speak with your adviser for details.

For undergraduate students only, withdrawals are limited:

  • Undergraduate students may withdraw from up to two courses in their first 32 credits, and up to two more times in the next 32 credits. This applies to new students who began their studies at UA in fall 2011, or thereafter, and to all continuing students attending in Fall 2013 or subsequent semesters.

  • Undergraduate students may withdraw from the same course only twice. This applies to new students who began their studies at UA in fall 2011, or thereafter, and to all continuing students attending in Fall 2013 or subsequent semesters.

  • Exceptions may be made for extraordinary non-academic reasons (e.g., medical treatment or convalescence, military service). See your adviser.

The new rules are intended to help you graduate on time. Your adviser can answer specific questions.

Interested in disasters? IAEM is interested in you! Feb. 22

spacer image
How would you react if you found yourself in the middle of the next terrorist attack? A great flood? An earthquake? Or, perhaps, the next pandemic?

If you come to our next meeting, you might have the opportunity to discover the answer to those questions and more! We’d like to invite you to join us for a meeting on February 22nd at 2:15 pm in the Student Union room 316.

The International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) is a student group dedicated to those who are interested in all aspects of disasters – from before they happen to long after they’ve ended. Our students often come from a diverse line of first response disciplines, such as emergency medical services, criminal justice, and fire protection. We’re looking to expand from our traditional base of aspiring emergency managers to students from all over campus. If you have ever asked yourself some of the above questions, volunteered for organizations like the American Red Cross, or simply know that you want to help people stay safe, we think you’ll find a home with our group.

Want to broaden your horizon? Would you like to meet international students at the University of Akron? Are you interested in helping a student or two develop their English fluency?

The English Language Institute (ELI)---the UA's English program for international students---invites UA students, faculty, and staff to participate in its 2012 Spring Conversation Partner Program. Through this program, the ELI pairs one or two international students who are learning English in our program with an American partner---(this could be you)--- for one hour of informal conversation per week. You meet with the same student(s) every week.

ELI students come from all over the world and bring with them a wide variety of educational, political, cultural, religious, and linguistic backgrounds. This program is a great opportunity to learn about another country and culture AND to make an international student feel welcome here in Akron. The one-hour weekly meetings run for approximately 8-12 weeks of the semester.
Sign-up for the Spring 2012 Conversation Partner Program first thing in January. We will begin accepting applications on January 2 in the ELI Office in Olin Hall 302. Applications received before February 1 will be greatly appreciated! Does this sound interesting? Call 330 972-7544 for more information.

Musical Duo: The Bergamot

Date: Tuesday, March 6, 2012

Time: 7:17pm

Location: SU Starbucks

The Bergamot has earned instant comparisons to the likings of Adele, Dave Matthews, with a little Michael Jackson thrown into the mix. Classically trained, Nathan Hoff is a multi-faceted artist, fulfilling an impressive array of roles from songwriting to engineering. On the other hand, Jillian Speece holds down the house with her crafty songwriting and powerfully beautiful vocals that will stop you dead in your tracks. Dynamite, fresh, fierce, and fun are just a few words that come to mind when talking about The Bergamot and it seems everyone is talking about The Bergamot these days.

The Bergamot calls their musical style “Organic Pop Music,” they describe their sound as a genre that “integrates catchy melodies and honest lyrics, with that throw-back non-processed sound we all grew up listening to.” In addition to their energetic sound, The Bergamot offers an intimate musical experience, too.

Dr. Robert M. Schwartz Associate Professor of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and Director, Center for Emergency Management and Homeland Security Policy Research, will be presenting his research at noon on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 in the Student Union, Room 310. The title of the research is, “Preparedness and Response Issues with the Tuscaloosa, Alabama Tornado.”

Abstract. The tornado that hit Tuscaloosa, Alabama on April 27, 2011 was one of the worse of 2011, as there was a major tornado outbreak in the southern United States. While the research examined fundamental emergency management issues of preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation along with lessons learned, this discussion will con-centrate on preparedness and response. The primary method was in-depth interviews with emergency management officials from Tuscaloosa County Emergency Management Agency, the University of Alabama Department of Public Safety, State of Alabama Emergency Management Agency, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Results indicated good preparedness and response at all of these levels.

Bring your lunch and meet Dr. Schwartz, learn about his research endeavors and show support for one of your colleagues. RSVP Mary Dingler, Office of Research Services and Sponsored Programs, or by phone at x7774.
