The University has released its academic calendar for this summer and next fall.

The calendar includes a three-week summer intersession, two five-week summer sessions and an eight-week summer session.

The new calendar aligns as closely as possible with those at Kent State, Cleveland State and Youngstown State, with which Akron has joint degree programs.

Fall semester will begin Monday, Aug. 27, 2012.

Spring break this year will be March 12-17. In 2013, it will be March 25-31.

The University of Akron is serving as the Summit County host of College Goal Sunday on Feb. 12, beginning at 2 p.m. in Simmons Hall. The college financial aid event is presented annually at sites around the state by the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA) and is endorsed by the Ohio Board of Regents.

College Goal Sunday is designed to provide assistance to students and parents in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is the application that is required to be completed to receive federal financial aid, including the Federal Pell Grant and student loans as well as need-based state grants.
This is a free event, and is open to current college students at any institution, as well as prospective students planning to attend a college in Ohio or out-of-state, and their parents. Registration is not required, but is encouraged. To register for College Goal Sunday, visit www.ohiocollegegoalsunday.org, or call 1-800-233-6734.

The Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA) is a nonprofit, professional organization for individuals actively engaged in the administration of financial aid within the state of Ohio for higher education. As an educational organization, OASFAA strives to offer resources to students, families and high school advisors to promote higher education and increase awareness of financial aid opportunities.

Undergraduate Student Government, in partnership with volunteers from AARP, will be offering Tax Preparation Services twice a week in the Student Union 3rd Floor Study Lounge beginning on February 1st and ending April 11th. The volunteers will be available in the 3rd floor lounge from 1-4 PM on Wednesdays and 1-6 PM on Thursdays. No appointment is necessary; assistance is given on a walk-in-basis. The services are open to everyone, faculty, staff, students, etc.

Those availing themselves of this service need to bring the following documentation:
Photo ID, Social Security Card, 1099 form, 1098-T form (students only), Copy of last year’s return (optional).

FILM ORGANIZATION, THE 2380 PROJECT, IS NOW HOLDING ITS OPEN

Film:
The Masterless

Synopsis:
The Masterless is a dark comedy about two small time criminals from Akron, Ohio
who get sent down to West Virginia to kill a man who’s going to testify for the FBI; but before they can, they get caught up in the whirlwind of a stolen $50,000; and end up with the Russian mob, the FBI, the local cops, the Mormon mafia, and a few more people looking for them.

Casting:
This movie requires a huge cast, as there are 42 speaking roles. Some of the main roles
are:
Bill – male – mid to late 20’s
John – male – late 20’s to early 30’s
Big Tony – male – late 30’s to late 50’s
Loudmouth – male – mid to late 20’s
Mel – male – 30’s
Sheriff – male – late 20’s to mid 30’s
FBI agents 1&2 – male – any age
Leader of cult – male – any age

As I mentioned earlier there are also a ton of supporting characters, so, many actors will be needed of all backgrounds and age ranges.

University of Akron Students may purchase a ticket for only $15 to see the soul-stirring Broadway musical The Color Purple Friday February 3 and Saturday February 4 at 8 PM at E.J. Thomas Hall.
This musical was based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Alice Walker and the film by Steven Spielberg.
Tickets must be purchased in person at the Thomas Hall Ticket Office
with valid Zipcard. All tickets $15 (excluding price A) not good on previously purchased tickets.

Members of the UA community and residents of the surrounding area are encouraged to take advantage of free tax preparation assistance through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (V.I.T.A.) program sponsored by the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy in the College of Business Administration.

Taxpayers with income less than $50,000 qualify for this free assistance program directed by UA alumna Kristina Melomed, J.D., and a team of selected accounting majors specially trained to be certified as IRS V.I.T.A. volunteers.

VITA services will begin on Saturday, Feb. 4, and run every Saturday (except March 17) through April 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Qualified taxpayers requesting help will find the VITA team in the College of Business Administration, Rooms 105 and 106, on Saturdays.

The University of Akron's 2012 V-Day Benefit Performance of Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues is a world re-knowned consciousness-raising event and fundraiser to help end violence against women, celebrate women, their bodies, and their experiences. It is sponsored by The Women's Resource Center, Women's Studies Program, E. J. Thomas Hall and supported by L.I.P Service. The monologues will be performed by UA students, faculty, staff, and Akron community members.

All proceeds benefit Vday.Org and the Rape Crisis Center of Summit and Medina Counties.

$10 for General Admission and $5 for UA students.

As we get closer and closer to our end of the year celebration at our Finale event, here are two more events to add to your calendar this week:

-February 2nd from 6:00-10:00 pm in the student union ballroom is the ZPN bachelor auction! All proceeds this year will benefit Up 'til Dawn so come and have some fun, and enjoy free food and music afterwards.

-February 6th from 5:00-9:00 pm at Chili's in Montrose is our dining out night! Chili's has generously agreed to donate proceeds from anyone who eats at Chili's during this time with an up til dawn flyer.
