aTo further enhance safety in the University Park neighborhood south of Exchange Street, uniformed Safe Neighborhood Officers will begin patrolling the area starting Sunday night. Safe Neighborhood Officers will patrol on foot, on bike and in marked vehicles —supplementing the patrols by University and city police through the overnight hours.

"They will be additional eyes and ears for us and the city police department," said Paul Callahan, chief of the University's police department. "The Safe Neighborhood Officers will work cooperatively with our police to provide a heightened level of coverage for crime prevention, personal safety and property protection."

Safe Neighborhood Officers will provide escorts for pedestrians, report graffiti, deter panhandling, provide crime prevention information to residents and businesses, report suspicious activity and report blighted properties that may violate zoning ordinances. The Safety Neighborhood Officers will be unarmed and will have no arrest powers.

Improving the quality of life in the University Park neighborhood is a priority of University Park Alliance. Working with community leaders, neighborhood residents and business owners, this is one of several initiatives that UPA is developing to help improve and attract investment in University Park residential neighborhoods and commercial districts.

Reminders:

  • Notify the UAPD if you notice anything suspicious or unusual. Call the department at 330-972-2911 (or 9-1-1 in an emergency) at any hour.
  • Travel in groups. Often, there is safety in numbers. If you are going to separate from your group, tell someone when you will return. Take a cell phone.
  • Alcohol and other drugs can impair your perceptions and decision-making. Do not place yourself in a vulnerable position by being intoxicated or under the influence of other drugs.
  • Lock doors and windows. UA's police chief says many times thieves enter through unlocked doors and windows. Ask your landlord to install a deadbolt, if one is not present.
