Tornado sirens to be tested Wednesday
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
UA will participate in the statewide tornado drill at 9:50 a.m. on Wednesday, March 28.

You do not need to take any action when you hear Wednesday's test. This test is being conducted to ensure that you are familiar with the siren. Additionally, the system is routinely tested on the second Wednesday of every month, unless threatening weather is expected.

If a tornado warning is issued for central Summit County, the University's police department will activate the outdoor warning system. If you hear the sirens and it is not a test, you should seek shelter in the lowest accessible level of a nearby building. Lower-level stairwells provide excellent shelter areas, as long as they are not located on an outside wall of the building. In buildings without accessible lower levels, interior rooms, such as offices and restrooms, provide the best area to take shelter.

Do not take shelter in large rooms or areas such as gyms with large roof spans. Also, avoid sheltering in location in close proximity to glass windows and doors.

You need to stay in the shelter areas until given the all-clear signal. The all-clear signal is announced to the campus two three ways:

  • over the outdoor warning system; and
  • over the campus two-way radio system to those individuals who have radios.
  • Over the fire alarm networking system.

If you have questions, call the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety at ext. 330-972-6866.

University to test its emergency text-messaging service on Wednesday
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
We will test our Z-Alert text-messaging service at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 28. A short message clearly identified as a test will be sent to all who subscribe to the free service.

We use the text-messaging service in situations in which students, faculty and staff need to take action to help assure their health and safety.  It’s also used when the university closes because of bad weather.

Subscribe to the service. Subscribing is free. Message rates from your carrier may apply.  Learn more about Z-Alert.

Have a question about Z-Alert? Write to ask@uakron.edu.

Our very warm March has challenged us all
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
This extremely rare weather event has raised several questions about our capabilities to cool campus buildings. We know that it is uncomfortably hot in some work areas and living spaces. We are providing fans to cool off many areas.

We have explored the possibility of turning on our cooling system across the campus — something that is not normally done until mid-April.

We have decided, instead, to “stay the course” for now, and here's why: The best weather forecasts are calling for the temperature to change dramatically within the next few days. Because of that, we believe that any move to “turn on” our cooling system now will likely result in extreme discomfort for students and staff, as the temperature projections fall into the 40- and 50-degree range in the weeks ahead.

Also, please be aware that a changeover from heating to cooling takes seven days for any effect to be felt, so even if we made the decision to turn on the cooling system today, the campus would not feel any relief. Also, turning on the cooling system without the routine preparation would cost, literally, tens of thousands of dollars.

We ask for your patience and understanding, as we continue to monitor the situation, make things as comfortable as we can for all of our students and staff, as we cope together with a most unusual March.

Complete survey to win a chance at an iPod
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University’s Accessibility Working Committee would like to survey the campus community and gain insight into how it views disability and the accessibility of the campus.

The survey will not only seek an understanding of accessibility concerns of the physical environment but will also inquire about in-class accessibility, parking, technology, and safety. Through data collection the committee will work towards enhancing accessibility at The University of Akron and make our campus more inclusive of all individuals.

We understand that survey completion may not be a high priority for some individuals, and to help encourage the completion of the survey our team will offer some incentives. As an incentive, first 100 students to complete the survey will be eligible to receive two $20 gift cards to Starbucks. Additionally all students who complete the survey will be placed in a drawing to win an 8GB iPod touch provided by Office of the Vice President and CIO Information Technology Services at Akron.

The survey can be found by clicking on the link below, additional information.

We thank you for your help and look forward to your responses!

Calling all freshmen and seniors for NSSE March 23 - April 27
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Think about your experience at UA. What programs have you enjoyed most? Learned from the most? What improvements should we make? Your viewpoint will help us improve the undergraduate experience. That’s why you should make your voice heard by taking the National Survey of Student Engagement.

If you are a freshman or senior, you have already received an individual link to the online survey. It should take 10 to 20 minutes to complete. You have until the end of the semester to respond, but why not complete the survey right now.

NSSE surveys students at hundreds of four-year colleges and universities about their participation in programs and activities that help them learn and grow. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college. Last year, UA was one of 761 colleges and universities to take part in the survey.

Join us and learn more about our new Flexible MBA. Students with any bachelor's degree are eligible to apply for admission. Students with science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medical backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

We offer an interdisciplinary concentration that allows you to take graduate credits outside of business to fulfill MBA requirements. Students admitted to any UA graduate programs can shorten the MBA by applying coursework from the current program.

Coordinated programs with Engineering and the BS/MD program allow students to reduce Gateway requirements in the MBA by taking specific undergraduate elective courses in business.

The CBA also offers programs in Accountancy, Taxation, Information Systems, Technological Innovation and joint programs with the School of Law.

Bloomberg Business week ranked our Flexible MBA #1 in northeast Ohio and #34 in the nation. U.S. News and World Report also rated our program as the top public Flexible MBA in northern Ohio.

Register to attend the session online at mba.uakron.edu and meet with our advising staff to learn more about admission requirements and how the Flexible MBA is Fit for your Future!

Anthropology professor to discuss her research over lunch April 18

Dr. Christine Thompson, Assistant Professor of Anthropology & Classical Studies, will be presenting her research at noon on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 in the ITL Seminar Room, Leigh Hall Room 414. The title of the research is, “Pre-colonial Phoenician Expansion from the Perspective of Lead Isotope Analyses.”

Description: For more than 2,000 years, the location of Tarshish has been lost. Biblical authors mention Tarshish as a place to which Phoenicians made long-distance voyages in the service of King Solomon, in order to bring back the massive quantities of silver that would allow Solomon to make silver in Jersualem as common as stones.

Not only has the location of Tarshish been lost since antiquity, but scholars have also rejected the stories about Tarshish as purely legendary, because silver dating to the time of Solomon has gone unrecognized in the archaeological record.

This talk will present a corpus of silver hoards excavated from today's Israel and Palestinian territories that is contemporary with King Solomon and the Levantine Iron Age in general, and demonstrate how recently developed technologies can link the silver artifacts in the hoards to specific geological ore sources, as a way of identifying the location of Tarshish.

Bring your lunch and meet Dr. Thompson and learn about her research endeavors. RSVP Mary Dingler, Office of Research Services and Sponsored Programs, or by phone at 330-972-7774.
