Complete survey to win a chance at an iPod
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University’s Accessibility Working Committee would like to survey the campus community and gain insight into how it views disability and the accessibility of the campus.

The survey will not only seek an understanding of accessibility concerns of the physical environment but will also inquire about in-class accessibility, parking, technology, and safety. Through data collection the committee will work towards enhancing accessibility at The University of Akron and make our campus more inclusive of all individuals.

We understand that survey completion may not be a high priority for some individuals, and to help encourage the completion of the survey our team will offer some incentives. As an incentive, first 100 students to complete the survey will be eligible to receive two $20 gift cards to Starbucks. Additionally all students who complete the survey will be placed in a drawing to win an 8GB iPod touch provided by Office of the Vice President and CIO Information Technology Services at Akron.

The survey can be found by clicking on the link below, additional information.

We thank you for your help and look forward to your responses!

Using cloud technology, The University of Akron now offers selected computer applications via a virtual computer lab to all students and faculty. This “always on” environment means you can access these programs anytime from anywhere using almost any device.

To access the cloud applications from University laptops located in Bierce Library and the Student Union, click on the cloud ICON and sign into the virtual lab.

For access instructions from a personally owned computer, visit UA’s virtual lab at http://www.uakron.edu/dts/virtual-lab/index.dot.

UA students can access five statistical and engineering programs. More are planned for the future. Current offerings are:

Autocad 2012
SPSS Statistics 19
SAS 9.2 (64-bit)
JMP 9
Minitab 16

There are 100 desktops available. If you cannot gain access to a virtual desktop, you will get a message saying there are "no desktops available." You will need to check back later.

The new virtual lab does not replace any other current on-campus access. It only expands access.

More information is available at UA’s virtual lab at http://www.uakron.edu/dts/virtual-lab/index.dot. If you have questions, contact the Support Desk at 330-972-6888.

Research for Lunch April 18

spacer image

Dr. Christine Thompson, Assistant Professor of Anthropology & Classical Studies, will be presenting her research at noon on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 in the ITL Seminar Room, Leigh Hall Room 414. The title of the research is, “Pre-colonial Phoenician Expansion from the Perspective of Lead Isotope Analyses.”

Description For more than 2,000 years, the location of Tarshish has been lost. Biblical authors mention Tarshish as a place to which Phoenicians made long-distance voyages in
the service of King Solomon, in order to bring back the massive quantities of silver that would allow Solomon to make silver in Jersualem as common as stones. Not only has the location of Tarshish been lost since antiquity, but scholars have also rejected the stories about Tarshish as purely legendary, because silver dating to the time of Solomon has gone unrecognized in the archaeological record.

This talk will present a corpus of silver hoards excavated from today's Israel and Palestinian territories that is contemporary with King Solomon and the Levantine Iron Age in general, and demonstrate how recently developed technologies can link the silver artifacts in the hoards to specific geological ore sources, as a way of identifying the location of Tarshish.

Bring your lunch and meet Dr. Thompson, learn about her research endeavors and show support for one of your colleagues. RSVP Mary Dingler, Office of Research Services and Sponsored Programs, mdingler@uakron.edu or by phone at x7774.

As a part of National Volunteer Week, speaker Gabriel Bol Deng will be sharing experiences from his life. Known as one of the Lost Boys of Sudan, Gabriel fled his village in South Sudan at the age of 10 with no knowledge of the location of his family following a violent attack. In 2007 Gabriel returned to South Sudan after 20 years to search for his family. Upon his return, Gabriel founded a nonprofit organization dedicated to offering educational opportunities and health services for the people in South Sudan called HOPE (Helping Offer Primary Education) for Sudan. The charity also puts a special emphasis on educating girls and empowering women "one village at a time".

Come hear this uplifting story on Tuesday, April 17th at 7pm in the Student Union Theater.
A free Subway boxed meal will be given to the first 75 students in attendance.
