Calling all freshmen and seniors for NSSE April 13 - April 27
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Think about your experience at UA. What programs have you enjoyed most? Learned from the most? What improvements should we make? Your viewpoint will help us improve the undergraduate experience. That’s why you should make your voice heard by taking the National Survey of Student Engagement.

If you are a freshman or senior, you have already received an individual link to the online survey. It should take 10 to 20 minutes to complete. You have until the end of the semester to respond, but why not complete the survey right now.

NSSE surveys students at hundreds of four-year colleges and universities about their participation in programs and activities that help them learn and grow. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college. Last year, UA was one of 761 colleges and universities to take part in the survey.

Construction Engineering Technology's “Ambassadors for Rebuilding” Helping Communities March 10 - March 16
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
By Steve Mullet, Construction Engineering Technology student

When Kevin Archer signed up last May to spend his 2012 spring break doing volunteer work in Nashville with a group of fellow construction engineering technology students, he didn’t know what to expect.
Archer, who has done some remodeling work but didn’t have a lot of experience in other facets of construction, found himself learning a little bit about subflooring, a little bit about roofing, and a little bit about concrete – and having a good time every step of the way.
“I enjoyed the whole trip,” Archer said. “If I am able to, I would like to go along again next year, just because of how much fun I had. Spending time with the other students, getting some experience – it was a great trip.”
Archer was one of 25 University of Akron students who made the trip to Nashville as part of a campus group called Ambassadors for Rebuilding within the Construction Engineering Technology Department, which helps people rebuild their homes both in Northeast Ohio – and, each spring break, at a location somewhere else in the country that has suffered a recent natural disaster.
Construction engineering technology Professor Craig Wise has led each of the last four years’ expeditions. Previous trips were always to Louisiana, which was still rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina. Nashville was chosen this year because of lingering damage from the 2010 Tennessee floods, Wise said.
“Ultimately, it’s probably my favorite thing about this job, is to create this mass of people who are willing to give up seven days of their lives just to help people,” Wise said.
The group had representatives from many different construction trades, he said. “We had a mason, two carpenters, two people who owned their own businesses, a roofer, a plumber, an electrician – we had a wide range of experience,” he said. “Most of the people who went along are a lot more skilled than I am. I’m just there to coordinate, pretty much.”
But even students who have a lot of construction knowledge tend to find they learn new things on such a trip, Wise said. Engineering, trigonometry, measuring, precision, deadlines, budgets and contract issues are among the topics participants get a chance to gain experience in.
The students worked on nine houses during the week, in varying degrees of disrepair. They split up into four crews, with each crew responsible for two or three houses.
One such house had a concrete walk out front that was all broken up and missing a handrail, making it a bit dangerous. Members of that crew were planning to take a jackhammer to the concrete, but discovered they could break it into manageable pieces with sledgehammers.
“Those guys were just pumped up,” Wise said.
Two and a half yards of concrete – and a great deal of hard work – later, the job was finished.
Other projects the Ambassadors for Rebuilding have undertaken include regular work with the University Park Alliance, an organization dedicated to revitalizing the neighborhood surrounding the university; and a day each spring and fall at Medina’s Camp Paradise, a campground for handicapped people. The students help with maintenance and making minor improvements.
But the alternative spring break trip is the group’s biggest project. And while the students who went didn’t do it for the glory, they did get a chance to spend some time with the families they were helping. The week concluded with a banquet for both the students and the recipients of their efforts.
“They were very appreciative,” Archer said. “Even though it didn’t seem like we did that much, I guess it meant a lot to them.”

*Ambassadors for Rebuilding is through the Construction Engineering Technology Department at The University of Akron.

Fundraiser for a Woman's Shelter in Akron Ohio!! This is an annual event, where admission is either an article of clothing to donate to the woman's shelter or a $5.00 donation.

Why call it a Panty Party? Because women often arrive at the shelter after a sexually abusive incident and their clothes need to be taken for evidence. The woman's shelter is always in need of donations for these victims. Clothing donations may include a new package of underwear, sweatpants, flip flops, and undershirts. The event itself is very casual with food, board games, and video games.

Please help Circle K International support this charitable organization in the Akron community on Sunday, April 15th in Ballroom B, 4:00pm to 7:00pm.

As a part of National Volunteer Week, speaker Gabriel Bol Deng will be sharing experiences from his life. Known as one of the Lost Boys of Sudan, Gabriel fled his village in South Sudan at the age of 10 with no knowledge of the location of his family following a violent attack. In 2007 Gabriel returned to South Sudan after 20 years to search for his family. Upon his return, Gabriel founded a nonprofit organization dedicated to offering educational opportunities and health services for the people in South Sudan called HOPE (Helping Offer Primary Education) for Sudan. The charity also puts a special emphasis on educating girls and empowering women "one village at a time".

Come hear this uplifting story on Tuesday, April 17th at 7pm in the Student Union Theater.
A free Subway boxed meal will be given to the first 75 students in attendance.

Do you like to dance? Have you ever wanted to learn how to dance but just don't know where to start? Better yet, do you want to be "that guy" (or girl) who can entertain everyone with flashy footwork?

If so, then come join the Akron Ballroom Dance Club as we host a workshop in Lindy Hop, one of the more original forms of swing dancing. Lindy Hop started in the 1920s and 1930s but still remains tremendously popular across the world today, both socially and competitively.

The instructor will be Phillip Page, who has been social dancing since 1999. Beginning at Youngstown State University, Phillip has had extensive training and has competed in many social and amateur events.

The workshop will be in Studio B of the Student Recreation & Wellness Center and will last from 11 AM - 5 PM, with short breaks throughout. The cost is $10 for UA students and $15 for non-students. Most importantly, the workshop is open to anyone, whether or not you have danced before. Join us on Saturday, April 21st for a fun and exciting workshop!

Community Walks (4/21 @ Joy Park, & 4/28 @ Lawton St Comm Ctr) April 21 - April 28

spacer image
Joy Park Community Center: April 21st 1:30-3pm, and…
Lawton Street Community Center: April 28th 1:30-3pm

The Minority Health Roundtable of Summit County is organizing two community walking events for Minority Health Month. Local residents will have a chance to get active while helping to identify barriers to walking in the neighborhood. Cameras and walking logs will be distributed and the data collected and analyzed to provide residents the opportunity to discuss these issues with local community representatives and safety officers who will also be in attendance.

There will be health information booths/table after the walk and healthy food demonstrations. It would be a great chance for students to get out and become more familiar with the local community.

ARI-AHEC is recruiting least 6 students (3 from nursing) for each day to assist. Nursing students will help with taking blood pressure and talking with participants about taking charge of their own health care, demonstrating and sharing “Know Your Numbers” pocket cards. Others will help with the walk and with “walking logs.”
