Calling all freshmen and seniors for NSSE
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Think about your experience at UA. What programs have you enjoyed most? Learned from the most? What improvements should we make? Your viewpoint will help us improve the undergraduate experience. That’s why you should make your voice heard by taking the National Survey of Student Engagement.

If you are a freshman or senior, you have already received an individual link to the online survey. It should take 10 to 20 minutes to complete. You have until the end of the semester to respond, but why not complete the survey right now.

NSSE surveys students at hundreds of four-year colleges and universities about their participation in programs and activities that help them learn and grow. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college. Last year, UA was one of 761 colleges and universities to take part in the survey.

Members of UA’s Greek community sang and danced their way to earning $6,000 for a good cause at the 79th Annual Songfest themed Billboard Hits by the Zips, held on April 15 at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall. The goal of the fraternities and sororities was to raise $5,000 for Camp Quality Ohio and they surpassed it.

This year, 11 chapters performed in Songfest, showcasing their members’ singing and dancing talents. The winners of Songfest were Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and Theta Chi fraternity for their combined act, Phi Delta Theta for 1st Place Fraternity, and Alpha Delta Pi for 1st Place Sorority. Over 750 people attended the show, which included UA alumni, parents, members of the Greek community, and campers and their families from Camp Quality.

Camp Quality Ohio is a week long camping experience and a year round support system for children with cancer and their families. Each camper is assigned a companion who provides support and encouragement during the week. Camp Quality’s goal is to provide the children with new and exciting activities in a medically safe environment as they make new friends and create memories that will sustain them as they continue their medical treatments. As a volunteer, nonprofit organization, there is no cost to the campers’ families.

“We have adopted Camp Quality as our philanthropic organization for next year’s Songfest,” says Katelin L. Getz, coordinator of Greek Life Programs. “The fraternity and sorority community is very passionate about this nonprofit organization and we are thrilled to be able to help support them.”

Would you like to be entered into a drawing for a $25 Visa giftcard??!!! I am asking you to help me with my thesis by filling out a survey online at the following link:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LPY39VK

Why? Many measures have been created to further research on minority issues but very little has been done to identify how whites view race and why.

In other words, we are looking to identify white cultural views of race. I would really appreciate about 20 minutes of your time to help in this research. Your input is valuable!

These items may cause you to reflect and you may find them very interesting! I would love to hear your thoughts after you have completed the survey or questions regarding the survey. Please feel free to contact me by responding to my e-mail address below.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Looking for something FREE and cultural to check out this weekend?

Join us in Daum Theatre, Kolbe Hall

Friday and Saturday (April 20 and 21) at 8:00 pm

Join honors students Erin Buck and Lindsay Mulhollen as they present their collaborative thesis performance.

Their project combines contemporary dance with live streaming and pre-recorded video projections on custom-built set pieces. It was inspired by interviews conducted with UA students asking them to speculate where they would ideally be in five years compared to the reality of their situations.

Erin and Lindsay will be sharing the concert with fellow honors student Anthony Codispoti, who will screen the short film that he produced as his thesis project. Graduating dance students Chelsea Hupalowsky, Kristen Pauken and Ellyn Sjoquist are also presenting work.

A talk-back session with the artists will follow each performance.

Kappa Sigma Book Donation April 22 - May 4

Do you have books that you want to sell back?

Is the book store or any other store not giving you enough money back?

Kappa Sigma has teamed up with Worldwide Book Drive, one of the
largest used-book donors in the US! Their organization promotes
global literacy by donating gently used books to charitable
organizations that focus on education and literacy.

Below are two competitive advantages that Worldwide Book Drive has
over other organizations:

We take EVERY kind of book! No scanning required. You won't be stuck
with leftover books. We go the extra mile to accept all books. We
want to provide the opportunity for every unwanted book to make a
difference in someone’s life by placing it in their hands.

We work with Life Skills Centers which employ over 100 disabled
adults. Books that cannot be used for our program are sent to this
center for processing by these adults in order to be recycled back
into paper.

The Men of Kappa Sigma will be in the Student Union second floor the
week before and the week of Finals week to accept any and all college
textbooks. There will also be a labeled box you can drop them into at
Bierce Library, by the Circulation Desk. So why not donate your books
to a good cause?

Habitat for Humanity needs YOUR help! April 23 - June 30

The Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter at the University of Akron needs your help! We have been nominated by TrueHero.org, a website designed to award volunteer projects, for our work on Project M.I.S.S.I.O.N.

Project M.I.S.S.I.O.N. stands for "Project: Making Insufficient Shelters Scarce In Our Neighborhood". The goal of the project was to build a home in the Akron area solely based off of student efforts, starting with fundraising for the parcel of land and building materials (over $80,000 worth of expenses) and ending with student volunteers helping build the house to its completion. The idea started back in 2009 and UA students raised the full amount of money needed to fund the building of the home. Ground breaking for the home began in the spring of 2011 and the project was completed last December when the host family moved into the home.

The project with the most votes receives $3,000. Second place is $2,000 and places 3-7 win $1,000. You can vote for our project at: http://truehero.org/projects/index.cfm?id=327

Click vote underneath the title of the project, enter your e-mail address, and confirm your vote! It will only take a minute of your time :)

Every vote will be one step closer to helping fight against the issues of substandard housing and poverty across the Akron area!
