Police planning 'strict enforcement' weekend
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Reminder: UA and City of Akron police officers say they will take a hard line on alcohol violations and other misbehavior starting Friday afternoon, part of what they are calling a “strict enforcement” weekend.

“It is not our goal to stop students from having fun,” says UA Police Chief Paul Callahan. “But we want to prevent the out-of-control, poorly planned parties that can lead to injuries and property damage.”

Here's some sound advice about how to have fun while steering clear of trouble.

Kappa Sigma Book Donation April 29 - May 4

Do you have books that you want to sell back?

Is the book store or any other store not giving you enough money back?

Kappa Sigma has teamed up with Worldwide Book Drive, one of the
largest used-book donors in the US! Their organization promotes
global literacy by donating gently used books to charitable
organizations that focus on education and literacy.

Below are two competitive advantages that Worldwide Book Drive has
over other organizations:

We take EVERY kind of book! No scanning required. You won't be stuck
with leftover books. We go the extra mile to accept all books. We
want to provide the opportunity for every unwanted book to make a
difference in someone’s life by placing it in their hands.

We work with Life Skills Centers which employ over 100 disabled
adults. Books that cannot be used for our program are sent to this
center for processing by these adults in order to be recycled back
into paper.

The Men of Kappa Sigma will be in the Student Union second floor the
week before and the week of Finals week to accept any and all college
textbooks. There will also be a labeled box you can drop them into at
Bierce Library, by the Circulation Desk. So why not donate your books
to a good cause?

Join us and learn more about our new Flexible MBA. Students with any bachelor's degree are eligible to apply for admission. Students with science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medical backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

We offer an interdisciplinary concentration that allows you to take graduate credits outside of business to fulfill MBA requirements. Students admitted to any UA graduate programs can shorten the MBA by applying coursework from the current program.

Coordinated programs with Engineering and the BS/MD program allow students to reduce Gateway requirements in the MBA by taking specific undergraduate elective courses in business.

The CBA also offers programs in Accountancy, Taxation, Information Systems, Technological Innovation and joint programs with the School of Law.

Bloomberg Business week ranked our Flexible MBA #1 in northeast Ohio and #34 in the nation. U.S. News and World Report also rated our program as the top public Flexible MBA in northern Ohio.

Register to attend the session online at mba.uakron.edu and meet with our advising staff to learn more about admission requirements and how the Flexible MBA is Fit for your Future!

The Department of Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (EOHS) is seeking help from student volunteers for a full-scale exercise on May 9th from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Full-scale exercises are simulated disaster scenarios that test the University’s capability to respond to and recover from large-scale incidents (such as active shooters, bomb threats, tornado touchdowns, etc). As a volunteer role-player, you’d contribute to the enhancement of the University’s emergency planning efforts by providing valuable feedback on your experience as a simulated disaster victim.

Student volunteers will get a free dinner during this exercise. If you wish to volunteer, please sign up using the 2012 Disaster Drill Volunteer Sign-up Form at the following website: http://uakronstudentlife.orgsync.com/org/iaem/Forms.

There will also be numerous speakers and career workshops covering topics such as resumes, interviewing, turning a job fair into a job, social media networking for employment and workshops by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services on Ohio Means Jobs. Additionally, there will be an employer panel discussion at 10:00 in the auditorium sponsored by the Hope fund (Helping Others Prepare for Employment.) There will be four different employers representing the following fields: manufacturing, medical, energy and the food industry, who will speak to the audience about the employment trends in their respective industries. This is the first year for the kickoff event, which will feature a presentation by the Executive Director of the Ohio Workforce Investment Act Area 7, John Trott. Trott, who is a former House of Representatives Legislative Aide for Financial and Educational Issues and has 20 years experience in the area of workforce services, will speak on the President's plan to provide Americans with job training and employment services, the federal government’s response and how it will affect Ohio- particularly our area. “While the kickoff topic is geared toward employers, the public is also invited,” says Carol Pleuss, coordinator of career and assessment services at UA Wayne College. “Right now we have over 50 employers registered, but we’re accepting employer RSVP’s for employer booths until the end of the month, so several more companies should be on-hand.” The career expo is sponsored by many local organizations including the Wayne Economic Development Council, The University of Akron Wayne College and The Common Good, which is a regional consortium of 25 social service agencies including the Wayne County Employment and Training Connection, Goodwill Industries of Wayne and Holmes Counties and the HOPE fund (Helping Others Prepare for Employment). The University of Akron Competitive Pistol Club

On Saturday March 31st, while most college students are either asleep or still out having fun, the UA Competitive Pistol Club was waking up. It was not because they wanted to, or because they went to bed that early, but because they had a job to do. Their job was to head down to OSU and compete in the State of Ohio International Pistol Championship Match, and bring home some hardware for the effort. They managed nicely.
After a two hour long car ride in the dark, the Competitive Pistol Club reached Columbus and started setting up for the Free event, which is a two hour long 60 round slow-fire event using a .22 pistol with the target at 50 feet. The UA Competitive Pistol Club got off to a good start, with Club President Jeffery Quartermaine winning 1st place in the C class. The next event was Women’s Sport Pistol, which consists of two 30-round sections with a .22 pistol, the target again at 50 feet. Here, Mary Lee King took 3rd place A class, and Jessica Miller earned 1st place C class.
Following the much needed lunch break after Women’s Sport, the Standard event began. The Standard event is three 20 round sections, where the shooter has anywhere from two and ½ minutes to 10 seconds for 5 shots, depending on the section. This was the last event using a .22 pistol with the target 50 feet away. Once more Jeffrey Quartermaine pulled through for UA, winning 1st place B class. Air Pistol, the last event, started shortly after Standard finished. During this event, the shooters had one hour and 45 minutes to shot 60 shots at a target 33 feet away using an air pistol. During this event the UA ladies showed their skill as Mary Lee King stepped up and took 1st place B class, and also 1st place A class in Women’s Air, while Jessica Miller took 1st place C class in Women’s Air. Mary Lee also took 2nd place A class in the 2 Gun Aggregate score.
All told, the UA Competitive Pistol Club brought home 7 medals from the State of Ohio International Pistol Championship Match. This was a great accomplishment for a young and inexperienced club, which says a lot about the Pistol Club Coach, Fred Totts. If you want to learn more about this up and coming club, join us on OrgSync. If you like what you see, join us in person for tryouts Fall Semester 2012. Be part of a winning team for UA. Go Zips!

CBS golf special to feature UA student-veterans on April 29

Student-veterans Christian Turner and Michelle McBee will be among those featured in “Get Golf Ready,” an hour-long special to be presented by CBS Sports on Sunday, April 29, from 2 to 3 p.m. ET. In segments filmed around the United States, the special demonstrates how golf has enhanced the lives of professionals and amateurs alike.

Both Turner, a public relations major who is president of UA's Military Veterans Association, and McBee, who will graduate with a law degree in May, are members of Clearview HOPE. The organization was founded at Clearview Golf Club in East Canton, Ohio, as a cost-free golf program exclusively for women veterans. Filming was done in Musson Veterans Lounge in InfoCision Stadium and in Stile Athletics Field House.

Clearview HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere), which was begun in 2011 by PGA/LPGA Professional Renee Powell, is one of two donation-driven programs that support the rehabilitation of military veterans spotlighted in the program.

“The women that make up our first class are exceptional persons, and have bonded so well,” says Powell. “They have been a tremendous inspiration to me. I have seen them reach out to disadvantaged women who have never thought about picking up a golf club. They have proven how Clearview HOPE delivers so much more than merely helping someone step to the tee and play the game of golf. We are building lifelong friendships here.”
