Ghanaian artist El Anatsui has taken a variety of discarded metals and created more than a dozen large-scale contemporary works that now dominate exhibit space throughout the Akron Art Museum, located at One South High St.

The pieces in the “Gravity and Grace” exhibit, which continues through Oct. 7, are described as “artistic alchemy at its finest” in a July 1 Cleveland Plain Dealer article. Along with the article, which notes that the “ambitious scale and fluid transitions of color (in the exhibit) recall the bigness of American Abstract Expressionist painting,” is an interview with the artist himself, conducted during his recent visit to Akron.

Through UA’s special partnership with the Akron Art Museum, faculty, staff and students currently have free admission to the museum to see this and other works on display.

The museum is located at One South High St., two blocks north of Quaker Square. For more information, call ext. 7429.

Location: Akron Art Museum, One South High St.

Lock 3 will be a vibrant mix of good fun, good food and good music this weekend when the 65th annual Italian-American Festival is held. Festival hours are Friday, July 13, from 11 a.m. to midnight, Saturday, noon to midnight, and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m.

Admissions is free to the festival, which is sponsored by the Council of Italian-American Societies of Summit County and the City of Akron. Download the full schedule for information on performances, free parking and the free shuttle service.

The Lock 3 stage promises a rockin’ good time on Friday as the Bel Airs take the stage at 7 p.m., followed by Bruce in the USA, A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen at 8:30 p.m. Both concerts are free.

The Bel Airs, formed in 1981, offer audiences an “eclectic bluesy-country-soul-and-rock-n-roll sound” influenced by such music legends as Wilson Picket and Johnny Cash.

Matt Ryan and the American Dream perform the music of “The Boss” and his legendary E Street Band. The longtime singer-songwriter is known for such classics as "Born to Run," Dancing in the Dark,” “Glory Days” and “Born in the U.S.A.”

Summer in the City is part of the uArts initiative — UA’s partnership with the City of Akron which offers faculty, staff, students and retirees a single (1) free admission to many city-sponsored downtown events this summer that require paid admission. To take advantage of these offers, you need only show your Zip Card. The valuable benefit also includes year-round free admission to the Akron Art Museum. See all the uArts events planned this summer.

The next uArts “Friends and Family Event” promises something for everyone as the Akron Art Museum hosts a wide range of activities July 26-29. To take advantage of the offer, just show your Zip Card. The Akron Art Museum is located at One South High St.

This opportunity is part of the growing uArts initiative — a special, exclusive arrangement the University has with the city of Akron that also allows you to attend most city-sponsored downtown events this summer for free.

Among the current exhibits at the museum is “Gravity and Grace, Monumental Works by El Anatsui.” The large scale works by the native of Ghana were described as “artistic alchemy at its finest” in a July 1 Cleveland Plain Dealer article. Anatsui used a variety of discarded metals to create the contemporary-style pieces.

Here are some of the highlights of the weekend. For more information on exhibits, visit the Akron Art Museum online. For information on all uArts events, visit UA’s Summer in the City website.
