Ghanaian artist El Anatsui has taken a variety of discarded metals and created more than a dozen large-scale contemporary works that now dominate exhibit space throughout the Akron Art Museum, located at One South High St.

The pieces in the “Gravity and Grace” exhibit, which continues through Oct. 7, are described as “artistic alchemy at its finest” in a July 1 Cleveland Plain Dealer article. Along with the article, which notes that the “ambitious scale and fluid transitions of color (in the exhibit) recall the bigness of American Abstract Expressionist painting,” is an interview with the artist himself, conducted during his recent visit to Akron.

Through UA’s special partnership with the Akron Art Museum, faculty, staff and students currently have free admission to the museum to see this and other works on display.

The museum is located at One South High St., two blocks north of Quaker Square. For more information, call ext. 7429.

Location: Akron Art Museum, One South High St.

Ohio Broadband Education Network discontinued July 19 - Aug. 31

The University of Akron and Time Warner Cable (TWC) are discontinuing the Ohio Broadband Education Network (OBEN) internet service as of August 31, 2012.

No new signups and renewals are permitted. When your current OBEN services ends, each user will need to transition to TWC Road Runner or to other internet services of their choice. More information.

We encourage current OBEN users to transfer to their new Internet provider by August 1. Information Technology Services will work with the existing customer base to provide direction and assistance as necessary.

OBEN is not broadly used by students, faculty and staff; in fact demand for the service is actually dropping. OBEN internet service was established in 2000. It was an initiative that never fully materialized or reached its projected potential. Today, the internet is available from many different providers with possible bundling with cable TV and phone services. Additionally, the internet is available for many different devices and is free at many locations.

The University has subsidized the OBEN service for our students, faculty, and staff by being the administrator and advocate to TWC since its inception. OBEN administration has become very difficult as TWC has continually made business process changes. Therefore, continuing to provide this function and service is no longer feasible or affordable.

More details are available one the OBEN Transition website, http://www.uakron.edu/projects/oben-transition/index.dot, including answers to Frequently Asked Questions, http://www.uakron.edu/projects/oben-transition/faq.dot.

If you have additional questions or need assistance, please call 330.972.6860 or contact the transition team at OBEN@uakron.edu.

Concerts are planned Friday and Saturday this week at Lock 3.

On Friday, July 20, Waterband performs at 7 p.m., followed by Chicago Transit, A Tribute to Chicago, at 8:30 p.m. Admission is free.

The music of the Cleveland-based Waterband is reminiscent of the sounds of The Grateful Dead, The Beatles, George Clinton and Mungo Jerry. Since the mid-'90s, Chicago Transit, based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, has been covering the classics of Chicago, including “25 or 6 to 4,” “Color My World,” “Hard to Say I'm Sorry” and “Hard Habit to Break.”

On Saturday, July 21, the music of the '60s and '70s will fill the Lock 3 stage when first The ReBeats take the stage at 7 p.m., followed by The Buckinghams at 9 p.m. Admission is free with your Zip Card.

From The Beatles to the Dave Clark Five, LuLu to The Rolling Stones, and The Turtles to The Monkees, the ReBeats cover a range of classics. The Buckinghams (at right) first hit the national spotlight in 1967 when “Kind of a Drag” hit No. 1. Other best known hits of the band include “Don't You Care,” “Mercy, Mercy Mercy” and “Hey Baby, They're Playing Our Song.”

Summer in the City is part of the uArts initiative — UA's partnership with the city of Akron which offers faculty, staff, students and retirees a single (1) free admission to many city-sponsored downtown events this summer that require paid admission. To take advantage of these offers, you need only show your Zip Card. The valuable benefit also includes year-round free admission to the Akron Art Museum. See all the uArts events planned this summer.

spacer image
The Department of Counseling's Community Counseling Program will officially change its name beginning Fall 2012 semester. The new program name will be Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

This name change was sought by the program in order to align better with Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) 2009 standards. Other than the name change, at this point all other aspects of the program remain the same including the program code (560005).

Note that the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program is currently and will remain accredited under the 2001 CACREP standards for Community Counseling Programs. The program intends to seek accreditation as a Clinical Mental Health Counseling program when it comes up for reaccreditation, per CACREP guidelines, which has lead to the name change.
