Ghanaian artist El Anatsui has taken a variety of discarded metals and created more than a dozen large-scale contemporary works that now dominate exhibit space throughout the Akron Art Museum, located at One South High St.

The pieces in the “Gravity and Grace” exhibit, which continues through Oct. 7, are described as “artistic alchemy at its finest” in a July 1 Cleveland Plain Dealer article. Along with the article, which notes that the “ambitious scale and fluid transitions of color (in the exhibit) recall the bigness of American Abstract Expressionist painting,” is an interview with the artist himself, conducted during his recent visit to Akron.

Through UA’s special partnership with the Akron Art Museum, faculty, staff and students currently have free admission to the museum to see this and other works on display.

The museum is located at One South High St., two blocks north of Quaker Square. For more information, call ext. 7429.

New Institute for Leadership Advancement welcomes first-year Honors Students with Leadership Summit July 23

In a partnership with the Honors College, the College of Business Administration’s new Institute for Leadership Advancement hosted
its first of five Leadership Summits on Monday, July 23rd. The Leadership Summit is a half-day program designed to engage first-year
honors students in an intimate leadership learning community where students interact with high level executives, engage one another
in group problem-solving, and develop personal visions while setting the foundation for a successful four years in college and beyond.

The program’s first keynote speaker, Sandra Pianalto, UA Alumna and Chief Executive of the 4th District Federal Reserve Bank
spoke to over 70 students on her experience in growing into an executive leadership position, describing the qualities and skills truly
needed for successful leadership. Ms. Pianalto advised students to “embrace uncertainty” and to “step outside of your comfort zone,”
as “true leaders are always discovering ways to continuing to learn more about themselves and others.” Ms. Pianalto also continued to
emphasize the idea of “passion” as a tipping point for future success, and the importance and necessity of “always giving back to one’s community.”

Kevin Smith, the newly named Director for the Institute for Leadership Advancement was very pleased with the Institute's first event. Kevin offered: "This is just the tip of the iceberg for what we have planned. The College of Business Administration will lead the way in developing the next generation of college graduates. Our students will be globally-minded, confident, and proven in their ability to solve complex, real-world problems. They will be prepared to adapt and lead from every level of an organization, and to pursue both work and life with integrity. Our graduates will be more than employable, they will be exceptional."

The Institute for Leadership Advancement will continue the Honors Leadership Summit program throughout the fall with the following speakers:

Monday, July 30th – Coach Terry Bowden, University of Akron
Friday, August 10th – President Luis Proenza, Ph.D., The University of Akron
Monday, August 20th – Vice President of Strategic Engagement, Jim Tressel, The University of Akron
Saturday, September 15th - Brigadier General Maria Kelly, United States Army

Looking for a fun and quick opportunity to volunteer? Need some community service hours? The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is working with The Autism Society of Greater Akron who is offering a 5-day camp, "Lose the Training Wheels."

We are in need of 80 VOLUNTEERS! Volunteers will receive a t-shirt and assist children during the process of learning how to ride a bike. Volunteers may choose one time slot for ONE or ALL 5 days of the camp.

During this 5-day camp, riders attend one 75 minute session each day where they are assisted by a volunteer spotter that jogs / lightly runs behind them providing encouragement and motivation. The rider begins the camp indoors riding a specialized bicycle designed to teach them to balance appropriately then they transition to riding their own bike outdoors.

There will be Volunteer Orientation Sunday, July 29 from 4:00-5:00pm. Please contact mcd20@zips.uakron.edu if you are unable to attend this orientation or if you are interested in volunteering.
