Summer in the City offers a variety music this weekend, beginning today, Aug. 3, with Blood, Sweat & Beers. The Northeast Ohio-based band with roots in Columbus as well, will take the Lock 3 stage at 7 p.m. The band’s music covers a range of genres, from Pink Floyd and Tears for Fears to Tom Petty, Peter Gabriel and Johnny Cash.

At 8:30 p.m., Mr. Speed, A Tribute to KISS, takes the stage. The show includes many elements of a KISS performance, right down to the face makeup and costumes. The set list will include many KISS favorites, including “Doctor Love,” “Black Diamond,” “Deuce,” “Goodbye” and “Detroit Rock City.” Admission is free to both concerts.

It will be an evening of soul and rhythm and blues on Saturday, Aug. 4, when first The Deacons take the stage at Lock 3 at 7 p.m., followed by the S.O.S. Band at 9 p.m. Admissions is free with your Zip Card.

The Deacons, a Northeast Ohio-based band, combines elements of jazz, soul, and rhythm and blues in its songs, ranging from “Homeboy” to “Deacon’s Groove” and “Rainy Night in Georgia.” The S.O.S. Band (Sounds of Success), is an America musical ensemble founded in Atlanta in 1977. It has several albums to its credit and such singles as "Take Your Time (Do It Right),” “S.O.S.,” “On the Rise,” “Just the Way You Like It” and “Sands of Time.”

Summer in the City is part of the uArts initiative — UA's partnership with the city of Akron which offers faculty, staff, students and retirees a single (1) free admission to many city-sponsored downtown events this summer that require paid admission. To take advantage of these offers, you need only show your Zip Card. The valuable benefit also includes year-round free admission to the Akron Art Museum. See all the uArts events planned this summer.
