STUDENTS ENCOURAGED TO CHECK THEIR FALL 2012 COURSE SCHEDULES VIA ZIPLINE
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Students are encouraged to check their Fall 2012 schedules via ZipLine.

• Log into ZipLine with your UANet ID and password
• Click on the “Students” tab and then select “Student Center” under the “Access My section.”
• Information regarding course meeting times, days and room location is given in real-time; in other words, all information is up to date as it is retrieved.

The Office of the University Registrar sends an e-mail to the instructor of record and all enrolled students’ UANet e-mail address when there is a classroom change made in the course(s) they are enrolled. It is recommended that instructors and students check their UANet e-mail often for any important messages from the University as this will be the official means of notification used by the Office of the University Registrar.

Students may access a computer from many locations on campus including:

• Simmons Hall – Lobby
• Student Union – Laptop Check Out and Kiosks
• Residence Halls – Computer Labs
• Bierce Library – Computer Labs and Laptop Check Out
• The Polsky Building – Room 192
• Buchtel College of Arts & Sciences building – Computer Lab Room 103B and Kiosks in Atrium
• College of Business Administration Building – Room 102

Questions regarding your course schedule may be directed to the Student Services Center at ssc@uakron.edu.

Student Health Services announces nominal user fee Aug. 27

spacer image
spacer image
Student Health Services serves thousands of Akron students each year, providing care and advice for ailments and injuries.

This fall, for the first time, Health Services will charge a nominal fee to students who visit the office. The $15 per-visit charge will help offset rising costs for delivering care to students.

As in the past, you will continue to be charged for any medications, tests and treatments you receive.

UA is not the first to turn to a user fee for health services. The $15 per-visit fee is in line with what other similarly sized Ohio public universities are charging.

Health Services is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located in the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. Visit Health Services on the web.

Junior Nick Lopez has designed his way into the hearts of football fans as the winner of the 2012 Student T-shirt Design Contest: Football Edition. The contest, sponsored by Barnes & Noble and Penn Station, invited UA students to enter their own unique designs for a T-shirt to support Zips football in the 2012 season.

Lopez's design was chosen from more than a dozen entries, which garnered nearly 1,000 votes over a two-week period of voting through Facebook, at the four Barnes & Noble locations on campus and at the Zips Spring Football Game, where he was announced the winner during halftime. As the winner, his shirt will be sold at campus Barnes & Noble stores.

Lopez, 21, is working toward a B.F.A. in Graphic Design through UA's Mary Schiller Myers School of Art.
With a mix of athletics and academics, Lopez's spirited shirt design was inspired by the University's strategic plan, Vision 2020, as well as the excitement of Zips football. "Nick Lopez's keen portrayal of the Zips football program is a terrific example of what is to come with Vision 2020," says UA President Luis M. Proenza. Read more.

About the UA Hockey Team:
The University of Akron "Zips" Hockey Team is a club sport participating in the American Collegiate Hockey Association at the Division II level. The team has had a strong tradition over the past 6 years and are highly respected in the ACHA. We play independent and league game schedule.

U of A Hockey is associated with the Tri-State Collegiate Hockey League, a local ACHA-affiliated conference. The league teams are:

University of Akron “Zips”

University of Dayton “Flyers”
Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) “Crimson Hawks”
Ohio University “Bobcats”
University of Pittsburg “Panthers”
University of Toledo “Rockets”
West Virginia University “Mountaineers”
Wright State University “Raiders”

Team Tryouts:
Tryouts are held at the beginning of the fall academic semester and are open to anyone interested in playing hockey for The University of Akron. There will be an organizational meeting where tryout times and team information will be given and is mandatory for new and returning players
Once the time and location of this organizational meeting is finalized, information will be posted on our homepage. Players are required to have full protective gear and are required to pay a fee for ice time before they are able to join the tryouts.

Academic Eligibility:
Each player must meet all ACHA academic eligibility requirements to play hockey at the University of Akron:
The student must be enrolled in the university
Maintain a 2.0 GPA
Undergraduates must carry & pass a minimum of 9 credit hours
Graduate students must carry & pass minimum of 6 credit hours
Eligibility standing is reviewed each semester

Scholarships and Financial Responsibilities:
Because of our club status, The University of Akron hockey Club program DOES NOT offer scholarships. In addition, our operating budget is over $60,000+/year. We ask that each student player pays a yearly fee of $1,800 to cover team travel expenses, practice ice time, and uniforms. This is common practice in collegiate level club hockey and we do everything we can to keep the cost to players as low as possible. This is achieved through mandatory fund raising efforts, like golf outings and other various fundraisers, for the players.

If you are interested in playing hockey for The University of Akron "Zips", feel free to contact us with any questions you have about our program. We encourage prospective players to come to a game during the season. Please let us know if you plan to attend a future game at The University of Akron.

Practice Times:
Our organization currently practices Tuesday & Thursday, 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM at Center Ice Sports Complex. Also, there is a team workout from 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM after practice on the same days a block away from the arena. To play, you must adjust your class schedule to be open 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM Tuesday & Thursday.

The presidential election is right around the corner, and to help Ohio voters sort through the constant barrage of campaign messages, three nationally renowned political analysts and strategists will share their insights and “tool kits” with interested students and individuals from the campus and community as part of the 14-week evening course, “Campaign Battleground.” Taking a “real time” approach, the instructors will track developments week-by-week as the candidates’ campaigns unfold.

John Green, director of the Bliss Institute of Applied Politics and distinguished professor of political science in UA’s Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, will teach the course with Gerald J. Austin, Democratic political strategist and adviser, and Mark Weaver, Republican political consultant and election attorney. Austin and Weaver are the Distinguished Chairs of Applied Politics (DCAP) for 2012 in the Bliss Institute.

The course fee is $50 for the 14-week session. Class meets on Thursdays from 5:20 to 7:50 p.m. beginning Aug. 30 and continuing through Nov. 29. For an additional fee, participating students will have the opportunity to attend the Republican or Democratic National Conventions.

For more information or to register, call ext. 7577, e-mail bliss@uakron.edu, or visit the Bliss Institute online.
