Parking advice for the first week: Leave home early
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Traffic on campus is always more congested the first days of a new semester. The same is true for parking.

Parking Services recommends that you leave home 30 minutes early for the first week of the semester. After the first week, conditions improve somewhat, as students settle into routines.

This map will help you think about the best places to park at various times during the day.

Parking Services is located in the North Parking Deck on Buchtel Avenue. Visit our website. Contact us by e-mail. Phone: 330-972-7213.

Student Health Services announces nominal user fee Aug. 27
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Student Health Services serves thousands of Akron students each year, providing care and advice for ailments and injuries.

This fall, for the first time, Health Services will charge a nominal fee to students who visit the office. The $15 per-visit charge will help offset rising costs for delivering care to students.

As in the past, you will continue to be charged for any medications, tests and treatments you receive.

UA is not the first to turn to a user fee for health services. The $15 per-visit fee is in line with what other similarly sized Ohio public universities are charging.

Health Services is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located in the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. Visit Health Services on the web.

Campus safety: Three smart steps to consider
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
1. If you are out late and ready to go home, we recommend:

  • Travel with a friend. Wherever you are – the mall, downtown, a concert – it's always a little safer to be with a friend.
  • Taking the free Roo Express shuttle. Shuttle service extends to 4 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, and now serves downtown, campus, and the neighborhoods south of Exchange Street and east of Route 8. Learn more about the weekend shuttle. See all shuttle routes.
  • Call for a Campus Patrol escort. Campus Patrol employees will escort students to and from campus locations between 5 p.m. and 2 a.m. daily during the fall and spring semesters. Arrange for a free walking escort by calling 330-972-7263.

2. Keep your valuables secure. Many thefts can be avoided. Don't leave your laptop, smartphone or keys unattended. Lock your residence-hall room, even if you are just running down the hall to pay for a pizza. Lock your locker in the rec center. Don't leave valuables (GPS units, a computer, textbooks) in sight in your locked car; instead, hide them or stow them in the trunk .

3. Empower yourself. You will meet many people in the weeks ahead, and many will become friends for life. But as you go about, please be cautious: The first couple of weeks of school in particular can be an exciting time as you develop new relationships. But take it slowly. Don’t allow friends and new acquaintances to pressure you to engage in behaviors (i.e., sex, drugs, alcohol) that you feel are risky or that make you feel uncomfortable. You have the right to make healthy, informed choices based on your own values and feelings.

Additional safety services:

  • The University police are available 24-7. Don't hesitate to call them at 330-972-2911. In fact, it's a good idea to program that number into your cell phone.

Our officers are fully commissioned by the state and bear full law-enforcement authority identical to municipal police officers and sheriff's deputies. Our officers patrol campus 24-7, and because we are committed to safety, we have expanded our patrol area to include the neighborhoods near campus with higher student density.

  • The department of Off-Campus Student Services provides education, outreach and counsel to students so that they may live more securely and smartly in the neighborhoods near campus. Website.

  • Our safety website is packed with helpful information, including these smart safety tips.

Four lots near stadium will be closed Aug. 30 only Aug. 29

spacer image

The first week of fall semester is always exciting as we welcome new and returning students to campus. Adding to the festive spirit this year, the Zips will kick off their football season under new head coach Terry Bowden with a home game on Thursday, Aug. 30, so it will be our first “Roo Wears Blue” day of the fall — get your Zips gear ready!

Fans on and off campus are looking forward to seeing this new era of Zips football begin, so we expect a high turnout for the game against the University of Central Florida Knights at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field at 7 p.m.

To minimize the traffic congestion and parking shortages, we have a game plan in place. With everyone’s cooperation, the day, and evening, should go smoothly as we travel to class, our offices, the game and home.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • If you are driving to campus after 4 p.m. on Aug. 30, you are urged to arrive at least 20 minutes early to help assure that you get to your destination on time.

  • Lots 6, 8, 9 and 10 near the stadium must be emptied and closed by midnight on Wednesday, Aug 29. These lots have been pre-sold for the game and they need to remain clear to accommodate fans. See map.

  • Lot 9B will open at 3 p.m. on Aug. 30 for free student tailgating. Only students with valid permits can participate in the student tailgate. See map.

  • Vine Street between Union and Spicer streets will close at midnight on Wednesday, Aug. 29, to allow for the setup of ZipsFest. Union Street north of Exchange (between Exchange and Vine) will be closed as well.

  • Lots 36, 20, 30, 32, 35, 40, 52 and 71 will be designated as alternative parking on Aug. 30, with a modified Roo Express route providing park-and-ride service. Temporary signs will mark the new Roo Express pickup locations. See map.

  • Lots 2, 4, 7, 13 near the stadium will be open to campus traffic until 3 p.m. After 3 p.m, vehicles will be able to exit the lots, but only individuals with pre-sold game passes can enter.

  • Lots 14, 15, 27, and 34, normally closed and used as public tailgating lots on game days, will remain open on Aug. 30. Attendants will arrive at 3 p.m., and charge $10 per vehicle for fan tailgating, while students and employees with permits can park free.

  • Spicer Street north of Carroll Street will become one-way northbound at 5:30 p.m. Two University police officers will be stationed at the Spicer Street-Buchtel Avenue and Spicer Street-Carroll Street intersections, starting at about 4 p.m.

Residence Life and Housing is pleased to announce changes to its guidelines for advertisement of activities and events. Residence Life has an opportunity to develop an environmentally friendly means of communicating with our residential students which will yield greater impact and reach than traditional bulletin boards and in more economic ways for those posting.
The new guidelines place the safety and security of the residence hall communities first. They build upon the feedback and responses generated from residence hall students, respond to their concerns regarding wasted paper and act on their ideas about how the University community might better engage them through advertisements for programs and activities.
Highlighted below are some of the most significant changes:
• Paper media will no longer be accepted for display on residence halls floors.
• Electronic bulletin boards and the use of OrgSync, Facebook and Twitter will replace paper signs as the primary means of advertising events and activities within the residence halls.
• Submissions for electronic bulletin board postings will be accepted from the University community by filling out an Electronic Posting Request Form, which can be found by clicking on the additional information link below. The guidelines will also assist in the development of highly effective advertisements.
• Submissions for posting and reposting activities on resident assistant, residence life coordinator and residence hall Twitter and Facebook accounts as well as through other social media outlets and will be collected and dispatched to our student leaders and staff.

The Department of Residence Life and Housing remains committed to ensuring our residential student population is as fully informed of campus events and activities as is possible. If you have any specific questions regarding our revised policies please do contact Michael Strong x7800 or mstrong@uakron.edu.

Values & Leadership Sept. 6
6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Identifying, understanding, and living your personal values are essential facets of leadership. Knowing your values and understanding the impact they have on your decisions and leadership style shapes the way you participate in groups/organizations. Value driven actions are themselves neither good nor bad, but when a group of individuals share values and judge others’ actions based on those collective values, they become the basis for determining if those actions were ethical. Understanding your values and how to align those values with groups will help you to effectively practice leadership in any organization.

Participants who attend this session will:

• Identify their personal values
• Be able to articulate those values to others
• Develop an understanding of group/organizational values
• Learn about ethics and its centrality to leadership
