Dining Services has modified the dining plans for this year
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Plans are as follows:

Traditional Dining Plan — With this option, you will enjoy 19, 15, or 10 meals per week at Rob's Café and Trackside Grille at Quaker Square. Rob’s Café offers all-you-care-to-eat buffet-style service Monday through Friday (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and Saturday and Sunday (brunch and dinner). Trackside Grille offers meal equivalent options off their regular menu.
We have expanded the areas in which you may use your Traditional Dining Plans, as we no longer offer the $100.00 in Dining Dollars. In addition to use at Rob’s Café and Trackside Grille, you may now use these plans at Union Market and Ohio Burger in our Student Union, Summit Bistro in the Polsky Bldg, and all of our area Zee’s Stores. Up to a $5 food purchase equals 1 meal swipe at these locations.
We have also added our NEW Rob’s 2 Go! in our Zee’s Store at Robertson Hall. Please view the menu options at Zee’s @ Rob’s for your meal on the go!

Gold Plan — You will receive $95.69 per week in Dining Dollars that may be used at any on-campus eatery and at our Zee's Convenience Stores for food purchases only. When Dining Dollars are used at Rob's Café, you will receive a 25 percent discount off the door rate. At Trackside Grille, 25% discount will be given off the menu items. Dining Dollars may also be used off campus and at a few area grocery stores for food purchases only.

This is the only plan that will offer the roll over option to the Spring semester. We will roll over up to $400.00 by way of deducting from your Spring Gold Plan charge. If you choose a different Dining Plan, we will add that money to your dining dollars.

Unlimited Plan — This plan may only be used at Rob's Café. You may enter as many times as you like during business hours. This plan offers the flexibility and exceptional value for students that have hectic schedules, need a snack between classes, or want to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating several small meals per day.

If you wish to change your dining plan: Please log into ZipLine and click the Dining Services icon to complete the change/cancellation request. Changes may be made any time during the first 4 weeks of the semester. Any changes after the first 4 weeks can only be upgrades. Dining plan changes are updated and billed accordingly on a weekly basis.

Have questions? Call UA's Dining Services at 330-972-6905 during normal business hours.

Student Health Services announces nominal user fee Aug. 27
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Student Health Services serves thousands of Akron students each year, providing care and advice for ailments and injuries.

This fall, for the first time, Health Services will charge a nominal fee to students who visit the office. The $15 per-visit charge will help offset rising costs for delivering care to students.

As in the past, you will continue to be charged for any medications, tests and treatments you receive.

UA is not the first to turn to a user fee for health services. The $15 per-visit fee is in line with what other similarly sized Ohio public universities are charging.

Health Services is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located in the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. Visit Health Services on the web.

Guidance for military service students who must miss class Aug. 31
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University is a “Veteran Friendly” institution and recognizes its obligations to our students who serve in the military, including the National Guard. Although there is a University-level expectation that all students will attend their classes at the designated meeting times, syllabi should clearly outline specific attendance policies for each course.

For students who currently serve in the military and will miss classes for short-term military leave or for military-training exercises, we recommend that they contact their instructors as soon as they become aware so that arrangements can be made.

In the rare case that unresolved issues arise due to absences from a course because of service in the military, we recommend that the student first contact the chair of the department through which the course is offered. If the student is still unsatisfied with the result, he or she should speak with the dean of the college and, if necessary later, with the Office of Academic Affairs.

As always, the Military Services Center is open in Simmons Hall 120 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, to assist. Students are also welcome to contact the center at ext. 7838 or veterans@uakron.edu for assistance with any issues encountered here at UA.

New exhibit at the CHP features rare Native-American objects

For the first time, more than 125 items from Jim and Vanita Oelschlager’s private collection of rare and valuable Native American art, tools and other cultural objects will be on display for the public to enjoy.

About the Exhibit

“Connecting Objects to their People: From the Arctic to Arizona,” the free exhibition of cultural objects from the 1800s and 1900s is open at The University of Akron’s Center for the History of Psychology, 73 College St., Akron. Running through Oct. 14, the exhibition is open Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. The opening reception from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, is also free.

Read more about the making of the exhibit on the CHP Blog

About the Oelschlager Collection

A longtime fascination with Native American-made objects led the Akron-area couple to build a private collection of more than 800 items. Tools, blankets, baskets, ceremonial objects, Edward Curtis books and prints, western bronzes, and popular culture materials from Native American peoples throughout the United States are included.

Until now, the Oelschlagers only displayed the treasures in their home, offices, and at Oak Lodge, the couple’s retreat in Western Pennsylvania. In 2010 the Oelschlagers loaned 300 items from the collection to UA, providing faculty and students with valuable research materials and immeasurable learning opportunities.

The Oelschlagers hope the exhibition fosters a better understanding of Native American culture. The exhibition's diversity over geographical areas, cultures, and time periods challenges the viewer to enjoy the art and craft of the various regions — and to avoid stereotypes and outdated symbolism.

Faculty and students from The University of Akron’s Department of Anthropology and Classical Studies and the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art prepared the exhibit with the support of the Oelschlagers. For more information call 330-972-7285.

spacer image
This is the final week of Summer in the City, which is part of the uArts initiative — UA's partnership with the city of Akron. Students have had a single (1) free admission to many city-sponsored downtown events this summer that require paid admission.

On Friday, Aug. 31, the Lock 3 stage will come alive with Electric Mud at 7 p.m. and ZOZO, The Ultimate Led Zepplin Experience at 8:30 p.m. Electric Mud is a three-member “Roadhouse Rock & Blues” band from central Ohio. ZOZO, The Ultimate Led Zepplin Experience is a tribute band, formed in 1995, to portray one of the most influential rock bands of the 70s. The playlist includes such Led Zepplin classics as “Heartbreaker,” “Ten Years Gone” and “Stairway to Heaven.” Admission is free.

On Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m., Lock 4 will conclude its Lock Bottom Blues & Jazz Club weekly series with the eight-member band, Blue Lunch. For nearly 20 years, the Northeast Ohio band has performed a wide variety of original and well-known blues and jazz songs, and has several CDs to its credit.

Lock 4 is “down under" Bowery Street, adjacent to Lock 3. Admission is free.

The uArts initiative continues — faculty, staff and students have year-round free admission to the Akron Art Museum. Just show your Zip Card. Visit the Akron Art Museum online to learn more about its current exhibits. To receive monthly updates about exhibits, special events and member offers, you can subscribe to the museum's free newsletter.

The Office of Accessibility now hires notetakers online! We are looking for reliable, quality notetakers in a variety of classes to sign up for the Fall 2012 semester. We will contact you by email if one of your courses has a student requesting a notetaker. Additionally each student receives a stipend at the end of the semester for the notes provided. Go to the Office of Accessibility website (www.uakron.edu/access) and select the link 'Sign up to be a notetaker' once your Fall 2012 class schedule is finalized.

Please contact the notetaker coordinator at 330-972-7928 or ooaga1@uakron.edu with any questions, comments, or concerns you have!

Enrolled students now receive $3.75 worth of free prints at Pharos print stations, per semester. Any print funds not used in a semester are not rolled over to the next semester. Beyond the $3.75, a new, lower fee is charged. Students now pay $.05 for B&W and $.10 for color.

Pharos print stations, which are available throughout the campus, can be identified by the card swipe attached to the print station.
