Know the deadlines for dropping or withdrawing from a class
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
You should know the deadlines to drop or withdraw from a class, along with the procedures.

For graduate and undergraduate students:

  • You may drop a class up to Monday, Sept. 10.  A "drop" will not appear on your transcript. The class simply "disappears." How to drop.
  • You may withdraw from a class between Sept. 11 and Sunday, Oct. 14 through ZipLine (no signatures required).
  • If you do not drop or withdraw, you will receive a grade in the class.

If you withdraw, a "WD" will appear on your transcript. You should know that a withdrawal may affect your financial aid, eligibility for on-campus employment and eligibility for insurance. Speak with your adviser for details.

For undergraduate students only, withdrawals are limited:

  • Undergraduate students may withdraw from up to two courses in their first 32 credits, and up to two more times in the next 32 credits. This applies to new students who began their studies at UA in Fall 2011, or thereafter, and to all continuing students attending in Fall 2013 or subsequent semesters.
  • Undergraduate students may withdraw from the same course only twice. This applies to new students who began their studies at UA in Fall 2011 or thereafter, and to all continuing students attending in Fall 2013 or subsequent semesters.
  • Exceptions may be made for extraordinary non-academic reasons (e.g., medical treatment or convalescence, military service) only with appropriate documentation. See your adviser.

These rules are intended to help you graduate on time. Students who withdraw on a regular basis generally do not finish their programs and earn degrees. Students who withdraw frequently tend to deplete their financial aid too early. Further, a pattern of withdrawals sends the wrong message to potential employers or to graduate schools. It says, “When the going gets rough, I quit.”

This is a summary of the new rules. Your adviser can answer specific questions.

Student Health Services announces nominal user fee Aug. 27
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Student Health Services serves thousands of Akron students each year, providing care and advice for ailments and injuries.

This fall, for the first time, Health Services will charge a nominal fee to students who visit the office. The $15 per-visit charge will help offset rising costs for delivering care to students.

As in the past, you will continue to be charged for any medications, tests and treatments you receive.

UA is not the first to turn to a user fee for health services. The $15 per-visit fee is in line with what other similarly sized Ohio public universities are charging.

Health Services is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located in the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. Visit Health Services on the web.

Speaker to explore issues related to the aging of America
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Dr. Ken Dychtwald will open the UA Forum Series at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13 in E.J. Thomas Hall and will present “The Aging of America:  How We Must Transform Our Lives, Our Businesses, Our Communities.”

A psychologist, gerontologist, documentary filmmaker, entrepreneur and best-selling author of 16 books on age-related issues, Dychtwald challenges our nation’s leadership to think about aging in new ways.

  • “How will aging boomers change established paradigms of work, leisure, learning and retirement— as well as lifetime brand loyalty?
  • What’s the most effective way to market and sell to “middlescent” boomers (45 to 65 years old) wishing to enrich the quality of their lives, while forestalling aging?
  • Why is managing a four-generation workforce the new diversity mandate?”

These are the questions Dr. Dychtwald encourages us to face, and offers guidance in his speeches, presentations, and writings.  He launched a company called Age Wave to track the influence of “mature consumers” in the marketplace and the workplace.

Ticket information and order online.

He will also engage in conversations with UA faculty, students and staff at two other campus appearances:

  • Thursday, Sept. 13, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., he will focus on health and wellness issues; faculty, students, staff and guests are invited to Student Union Ballrooms D, E, and F. Free.
  • Friday, Sept. 14, from 8:30 to 10 a.m., he will focus on business and aging, including new products, services and opportunities; faculty, students, staff and guests are invited to Student Union Ballrooms D, E, and F. Free.

See who else will speak on campus this year.

New play about Josephine Baker opening September 13 at the University of Akron Sept. 13 - Sept. 22

(Akron, OH) — Josephine Baker: The Black Pearl, a new play by Dr. Susan Speers, premiers Sept. 13 at The University of Akron’s (UA) Sandefur Theatre in Guzzetta Hall, at the corner of Hill Street and East Buchtel Ave.

Josephine Baker: The Black Pearl is the story of the fantastic life of Josephine Baker, a trailblazing Negro performer—acknowledged as the “the highest paid chorus girl” in America in the 1920s. She moved to France in 1925 and ultimately achieved international fame as a performer as a featured with the Folies Bergeres, becoming the toast of Parisian cabaret society. She was the first American-born women to receive the French Croix de Guerre for her work on behalf of the French Resistance in World War II. Although she spent most of her life in Paris, she also supported the American Civil Rights movement, appearing on the stage with Dr. Martin Luther King in the March on Washington.

Josephine Baker: The Black Pearl is written and directed by UA Theatre professor Susan Speers, who UA audiences will remember as the director of last season’s very successful The Gospel According to Tammy Faye. Music direction is provided by Jack Schantz, head of UA School of Music’s Jazz program.

Performances are September 13-15 and 20-22 at 8 p.m., and September 16 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $12 general admission; $10 for seniors and UA faculty, staff and alumni; and $6 for students. Discounts are available for groups of ten or more. For more information, call (330) 972-7895 or visit http://www.uakron.edu/dtaa.

The University of Akron's Zipmail is a compilation of University announcements for University students, sent each Friday unless circumstances require otherwise. The deadline for submissions to be considered by the University is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Zipmail is a University of Akron communication vehicle established for the benefit of The University of Akron to communicate with its students. Items will be accepted for publication only when the University is directly involved in the activity through participation, sponsorship, or partnership with one of its recognized organizations, colleges or departments. The University reserves the right to edit or to refuse to run any submission for any reason. Zipmail is not, nor is it intended to be, a public forum or a limited public forum. Questions about the implementation of this policy may be directed to zipmail@uakron.edu.

Items to be considered for inclusion in Zipmail should be sent through the Zipmail Event Submission Form. Due to the volume of submissions received, items will not run more than one time.

Questions about specific announcements should be made to the contact person/department/organization listed in the announcement.Your event will automatically be forwarded to the University's online calendar. The Zipmail Coordinator can be reached at x2837.
