Welcome to UA! Have you found your Golden Ticket yet? Sept. 10 - Sept. 28
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Are you a first-year student? Did you find a Golden Ticket in your UA Student Handbook? It’s the key to starting your Akron Experience as you begin your college years here.

Just grab your ticket and head to one of three redemption centers on campus:

    - Polsky Bookstore
    - Student Union Information Center
    - Student Services Center Information Desk in Simmons Hall

The centers are staffed by UA Difference Makers. You will be welcomed to campus and have the chance to make an appointment for a 15-minute meeting with a difference maker who can tell you more about the Akron Experience. You’ll learn more about the exceptional resources and opportunities available to you here at UA and get advice on balancing school, work and life.

No Golden Ticket? No problem. Just head to a redemption center and tell the UA Difference Maker you meet there, “I want to start my Akron Experience.”

Don’t forget to visit the Akron Experience to learn more.

We’re Publicizing Your Success

The University of Akron wants to make sure that you're recognized for your achievements, so we’ve started using a platform called readabout.me to publicize your accomplishments, like making the dean's list, studying abroad, volunteering in the community, winning an award, and more. We will also send news items about your Akron Experience back to your hometown newspapers, and publish them on your readabout.me webpage.

Your online reputation is important – most employers Google an applicant's name during the hiring process for jobs and internships. By using readabout.me, UA will help you create a positive online profile.

When UA issues news stories about your accomplishments, you'll receive an email with a link to view your story online. You can log in via Facebook to add your photo and share your achievement with friends and family. Look for your first story to arrive in your inbox and online next week!

If you have any questions about readabout.me, or to claim your profile, see the full announcement or email achievements@uakron.edu. We look forward to celebrating your achievements with your local hometown media and online at readabout.me.

Keep up the good work, and be on the lookout for emails about your accomplishments!

Guidance for military service students who must miss class Sept. 14
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University is a “Veteran Friendly” institution and recognizes its obligations to our students who serve in the military, including the National Guard. Although there is a University-level expectation that all students will attend their classes at the designated meeting times, syllabi should clearly outline specific attendance policies for each course.

For students who currently serve in the military and will miss classes for short-term military leave or for military-training exercises, we recommend that they contact their instructors as soon as they become aware so that arrangements can be made.

In the rare case that unresolved issues arise due to absences from a course because of service in the military, we recommend that the student first contact the chair of the department through which the course is offered. If the student is still unsatisfied with the result, he or she should speak with the dean of the college and, if necessary later, with the Office of Academic Affairs.

As always, the Military Services Center is open in Simmons Hall 120 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, to assist. Students are also welcome to contact the center at ext. 7838 or veterans@uakron.edu for assistance with any issues encountered here at UA.

We chose pirates because of talk like a pirate day and because Pastafarians (church of the flying spaghetti monster) traditionally dress up as pirates.

A prize will be awarded for the best Male and Female Pirates.

Most costume shops should be open by now. Halloween City is a good one or The Party Store. Spencer's and Hot Topic sell pirate gear from time to time. Your other option is to buy at least a pirate's hat from Amazon.com. Make sure if you buy online that you allow 3-7 days for shipping before this event. I would recommend paying for shorter shipping times if you didn't order about two weeks ago.

We will have a table in the Student Union during these times as well.
You must at least have a pirate hat to participate. Pirate hats on Amazon.com go from $5-20 dollars for decent ones.

Note: Swords and weapons might induce panic. One kid on campus that I know of was actually ticketed for wearing a gas mask at an Anime club event. The gas mask was part of his legit costume but the University considered it inducing panic. Note, many people don't know about talk like a pirate day, and this isn't exactly close to halloween either. So people might get the wrong idea if your costume is panic inducing. So be careful and don't get the group into trouble. Keep your costumes G rated with minimal weapons and masks.

We will trto table at these times as well.

Fulbright and Goldwater Scholarship Information Session Sept. 24

spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The Honors College is hosting a Fulbright and Goldwater Scholarship Information Session on September 24th from noon-1:30pm in the Honors Common Room.

Fulbright Scholarships are prestigious, nationally-competitive awards that provide students full funding for a year of graduate study in an international setting. In the past three years, four University of Akron students have won a Fulbright Scholarship. If you are a student with an outstanding academic record, you should think about applying for a Fulbright Student Award no matter what field you are studying.

If you are a junior (by credits) this fall and if you will be listed on a research publication by December, you should consider applying for a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship. A Goldwater Scholarship would attract outstanding graduate schools to consider a graduate application from you.

The session is open to all students with demonstrated intellectual curiosity, leadership, social responsibility, and well defined personal and professional goals. Students interested in working closely with faculty to develop and conduct research abroad, senior-level and graduate school scholarships for educational funding, and the opportunities to gain unique experiences in their field of interest are highly encouraged to attend.
