Celebrate the International Cultures Represented at The University of Akron!

The Office of International Programs (OIP) invites everyone to the Around the World Party on Friday, September 28, from 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. at Quaker Square Station, when we will celebrate the different cultures, ethnicities, religions, and music represented by our students, scholars, & employees! At the beginning of the party, everyone will be given passports to take to the different cultural tables, which represent various international populations on campus. At each table, participants will receive something for their passport. This time provides a great opportunity to talk to members of our international community and ask them questions! At some tables you may try on traditional clothing, learn a craft, etc.

In addition to cultural demonstrations, we will have dance and musical demonstrations from around the world! After the demonstrations, the dance floor will be open to all and our D.J. will play music from different parts of the globe. If you would like the D.J. to play a special song, you may bring it on a standard CD, not an MP3 CD. Requests are limited to one per person. Snacks & beverages will be provided.

Admission is $5 at the door, but if you purchase your tickets on or before Wednesday, September 26, on OIP eMarket, tickets will be $3. You will find the link on our website: www.uakron.edu/oip. Click on OIP eMarket. Then click on “General Fees” to find the "Around the World Party." You must then bring your receipt with you to enter the party. Everyone must show their Zip Cards at the door and may bring one guest from the community at large. The guest must bring a picture I.D. Ever wondered how all that trash at sporting events is handled and managed? And how much of it gets recycled? The Akron marathon attracts over 10,000 runners from around the state and beyond. These runners finish their race in the Aeros stadium in downtown Akron. As you can imagine, water bottles, beer cans, and other containers accumulate enormously. The marathon relies on volunteer effort to help maintain the upkeep of trash and recyclables, with the goal of recycling as much as possible. In the past, there has been over two tons of recyclables collected in the venue on the day of the race. This year, efforts are expanding to include composting of food scraps, container-specific recycling and educational display. Volunteers can be credited for as many as 6 hours of service at this event and a T-shirt to show for it. Contact Environmental Akron to sign up as a volunteer.

Homecoming Week: Singer Andy Grammer Oct. 3
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Date: Wednesday, October 3, 2012
Time: 8pm
Location: EJ Thomas Hall

http://www.andygrammer.com

In 2011, ANDY GRAMMER emerged as one of the biggest success stories in the music business. He performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Live with Regis & Kelly, he shared the stage with Taylor Swift and Colbie Caillat, and he was the first male pop star since 2003 (Jason Mraz) to reach the Top 5 at Adult Pop Radio on his first single, “Keep Your Head Up”, which is now a certified Gold Record quickly approaching Platinum.

Known for his vibrant pop/rock/soul mix and free-flowing vocal delivery, the acclaimed singer, songwriter, and musician – who began as a street performer in Santa Monica, CA - is now poised to make 2012 another big year. Radio has enthusiastically embraced his follow-up single “Fine By Me,” his first headlining tour started in January with most of the shows being sell outs, and he will be releasing a Live EP, ANDY GRAMMER LIVE, in the first quarter.

From the buoyant “Keep Your Head Up” to the breezy “Fine By Me,” to the jubilant horn-laced “The Pocket,” and emotionally-charged “You Should Know Better,” his irresistible pop songs blend heartfelt, compelling lyrics with instantly unforgettable melodies.

Named one of Billboard’s 2011 Artists to Watch, the singer recorded the album in New York and Los Angeles with a collection of top producers, including Matt Wallace (Faith No More, Maroon 5), S*A*M & Sluggo (Train, Neon Trees), and Barrett Yeretsian (Christina Perri). “Basically, it was show up somewhere, really dig in with someone who’s going to help you get your creative vision across and then go somewhere else and do it again,” he says. “We got some really great stuff that I wouldn’t have gotten if I just worked with one producer.”

Performing live remains a communal experience for Grammer, who’s toured with Colbie Caillat, the Plain White T’s, Parachute, and Natasha Bedingfield - among others.

Andy Grammer is a UA event, FREE for UA students/staff with valid UA Zipcard
