Coming Monday: A new ZipLine
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Get ready — a streamlined, redesigned ZipLine will launch on Monday with a new name, "My Akron."

When you log in to My Akron on Monday, you see an entirely new layout.

At the top are reminders — things you can do to enhance your success in and out of the classroom.

Navigation is improved; it'll be easier to get where you are going.

And we're introducing the seven areas of The Akron Experience, a life-spanning University initiative that weaves together classroom, research and career-related opportunities in ways that will broaden your horizons and prepare you for jobs or advanced degrees.

Over time, My Akron will evolve to include more personalized content. It will become your personal dashboard, where you'll see at a glance important information about your college and your major, along with personalized notifications. It's all intended to make it easier for you to create your Akron Experience and succeed at Akron.

Let us know what you think! web@uakron.edu

Marathon on Saturday will delay your trip to campus
spacer image

spacer image
spacer image
The Akron Marathon is Saturday.

As in the past, the runners will travel north on Brown Street, cut across campus to University Avenue and South Broadway Street.

If you are coming to campus between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. that day, you will want to arrive early. Some roads downtown will be closed periodically.

Plan your trip to campus: See maps of the marathon route.

Summa Health System, Goodyear, Verizon Wireless, and Oriana House are among the variety of employers expected at the All-Campus Career Fair, to be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 in the Student Union ballrooms.

Sponsored by the University’s Career Center, the fair is open to all UA students and alumni. Professional dress and resumes will be required for entry. The event is free.

“Alumni and students from all majors are encouraged to attend and meet these employers,” says Mike Kulick, associate director of the UA Career Center, which is sponsoring the fair. “This is a great opportunity to search for full-time and part-time positions as well as internships.”

To help attendees get the most out of the career fair, the Career Center will hold two preparation seminars:

    • Tuesday, Oct. 16 from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Student Union 316.

    spacer image
    spacer image
UA is now using a service called readabout.me to publicize your achievements in and out of the classroom.

The first story was about enrollment this term, but you will receive recognition throughout the year when you are named to an academic or leadership position, earn an athletic achievement or join a team, make the dean’s list, or earn a scholarship.

This allows you to get recognition for your Akron Experience, and creates an online profile at readabout.me that you can use for jobs, internships, and references after graduation.

You can also share your accolades with friends and family through email and social media, right from your readabout.me page.

Students – Take advantage of Peer Mentoring Services by The Office of Multicultural Development!
    spacer image
    spacer image
    spacer image
    spacer image
The Office of Multicultural Development provides a variety of academic programs and services to help support the University’s goals of recruiting and retaining multicultural students, and promoting a culture of student success.
Peer Mentoring Services strives to provide students with a welcoming and supportive environment that models and encourages excellence. Mentoring is a one-on-one relationship between an upperclassman University of Akron student (mentor) and a new first-year student (mentee). This relationship develops over a one-year period of time with clearly defined roles and expectations. The upper-class student (mentor) is knowledgeable, experienced, and willing to share his/her time, energy, and talents with you, the student (mentee). If you are not a first year student, do not worry! We also are proud to accept any willing student in search of a mentor. Through regular meetings and activities, mentors will help their mentees discover the potential within themselves to succeed in chasing their personal, academic, and professional goals.

We encourage you to sign-up to get a Peer Mentor today! The Office of Multicultural Development strives to help students develop a sense of belonging to our campus community and an increased level of motivation and pride. This will enhance the overall college experience and, ultimately, prepare students for success in the classroom and beyond.

Please think about becoming a part of this great program! Students can sign-up to get a Peer Mentor online at https://www.uakron.edu/webforms/as-enrollment.dot or by visiting Simmons Hall 124. For questions, contact Autumn Frampton at ext. 8660 or autumn@uakron.edu.

MathWorks will present “Developing Measurement and Analysis Systems Using MATLAB at The University of Akron” on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., in the Student Union, room 314.
MATLAB and its toolboxes provide powerful tools for data analysis. However, getting large data sets into the MATLAB environment is often a two-step process: first pulling the data into a file, then reading the file into MATLAB. Data Acquisition Toolbox and Instrument Control Toolbox allow MATLAB to communicate directly with test hardware to control and accelerate data input. This tech session will cover techniques to acquire and analyze data, build stand-alone test applications, generate reports, and automate measurements.
Presented by Rob Graessle, Application Engineer, this free session will cover:
    • MATLAB Overview
    • Connectivity to data acquisition hardware and instruments
    • Performing statistical analysis and curve fitting
    • Automating analysis via automatic MATLAB code generation
    • Building GUIs and generating reports
    • Sharing your work

In 2011, ANDY GRAMMER emerged as one of the biggest success stories in the music business. He performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Live with Regis & Kelly, he shared the stage with Taylor Swift and Colbie Caillat, and he was the first male pop star since 2003 (Jason Mraz) to reach the Top 5 at Adult Pop Radio on his first single, “Keep Your Head Up”, which is now a certified Gold Record quickly approaching Platinum.

Known for his vibrant pop/rock/soul mix and free-flowing vocal delivery, the acclaimed singer, songwriter, and musician – who began as a street performer in Santa Monica, CA - is now poised to make 2012 another big year. Radio has enthusiastically embraced his follow-up single “Fine By Me,” his first headlining tour started in January with most of the shows being sell outs, and he will be releasing a Live EP, ANDY GRAMMER LIVE, in the first quarter.

From the buoyant “Keep Your Head Up” to the breezy “Fine By Me,” to the jubilant horn-laced “The Pocket,” and emotionally-charged “You Should Know Better,” his irresistible pop songs blend heartfelt, compelling lyrics with instantly unforgettable melodies.

Named one of Billboard’s 2011 Artists to Watch, the singer recorded the album in New York and Los Angeles with a collection of top producers, including Matt Wallace (Faith No More, Maroon 5), S*A*M & Sluggo (Train, Neon Trees), and Barrett Yeretsian (Christina Perri). “Basically, it was show up somewhere, really dig in with someone who’s going to help you get your creative vision across and then go somewhere else and do it again,” he says. “We got some really great stuff that I wouldn’t have gotten if I just worked with one producer.”

Performing live remains a communal experience for Grammer, who’s toured with Colbie Caillat, the Plain White T’s, Parachute, and Natasha Bedingfield - among others.

Andy Grammer is a UA event, FREE for UA students/staff with valid UA Zipcard

As a performer with hundreds of performances under his belt, Chinua captivates audiences all over the world with the simplicity and class that defines his career. “My show is very simple -- what you see is what you get,” says Chinua. Chinua counts himself very fortunate to have performed with Celine Dion in front of a crowd of 30,000 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. He’s also written songs with Wyclef Jean and worked in the studio with producer/rapper Kanye West on rapper Talib Kwelis’ song “Just To Get By.”

Chinua’s other accomplishments include winning the Disc Makers Independent Music World Series in 2004, beating out over 1,000 bands with just a guitar player to accompany him.
