The UA Police Department arrested a man this morning after he threatened a student with a knife in the Student and Administrative Services building on East Mill Street. The good news is that no one was physically hurt, and the attacker was caught because a witness acted quickly and smartly.

Here’s what happened: At about 9:15 a.m. today, a man allegedly confronted a random UA student in the SAS building. The man, showing a knife, attempted to force the student down a hallway. When the victim resisted, the man fled the building.

Another UA student followed the attacker and used a cell phone to notify University Police, who arrested the man minutes later on the Mill Street bridge. The suspect, not a UA student, is being held in the Summit County Jail.

Incidents like this are rare on our campus. Nevertheless, it pays for you to be aware of your surroundings at all times, because that is an effective way to prevent crime. For instance, if you hear the same footsteps behind you for a long period, don’t be afraid to glance over your shoulder or to walk into an area where many people are present. Today’s incident was unusual in that it took place with others close by, and partly because of that, the attacker was quickly identified and caught.

Here are some other safety suggestions:

• Program the UAPD phone number (972-7123) into your cell phone or simply dial 9-1-1.

• Become familiar with the emergency phone locations on the routes you frequent on campus. There are more than 80 phones on campus. A list of the locations is here: http://www.uakron.edu/police/crimprev.htm/.

• Use the student escort service, which operates from 5 p.m. to midnight, seven days a week, for the safety of anyone walking on campus. Call ext. 7263 and an escort will come to your location and accompany you to any campus building or parking lot. Employed and trained by the University Police, the campus patrol teams are easily identified by their distinctive T-shirts or jackets.

I commend the student who followed the attacker and called us on his cell phone. By keeping a distance from the attacker, he did not put himself in harm’s way, and his quick action enabled us to arrest the suspect without incident. His actions serve as good example of how to handle such a situation safely and responsibly.

Assistant VP of Campus Safety/Chief of Police
