You’re invited — Come celebrate UA’s top women athletes Saturday
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Title IX is a federal law that changed the future for young women interested in athletics — now you are invited to be part of UA’s 40th Anniversary Celebration of Title IX on Saturday, Oct. 6, as we honor the most successful women athletes in school history. The free event, part of our 2012 Homecoming festivities, begins at 11 a.m. at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field in the FirstMerit Foundation Club Level (fifth floor).

Did you know that the University’s only national athletic individual champions were women? Two of them will be speaking at the event. They are among 40 female student-athletes identified by the Department of Athletics as part of the 40th Anniversary Celebration. The 40 include the school's three individual national champions, 22 All-Americans and 18 current members of the Varsity "A" Association Hall of Fame.

Headlining Saturday’s event will be Christi Smith, honored as the No. 1 UA Female Athlete of all time for her impact on the track program, beginning with her freshman year in 1997. Smith was UA’s first individual national champion and first female U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier.

Smith, along with Jenna Compton, the 2008-09 NCAA Individual Air Rifle Champion, will talk about their experiences at student-athletes and the impact of Title IX.

Also taking the podium on Saturday will be Candace Campbell Jackson, vice president and chief of staff at UA, whose topic is the “Importance of Women’s Athletics at UA.” Jodi Kest, head women’s basketball coach, will discuss the impact of Title IX from her perspective as a coach and former collegiate student-athlete.

Tom Wistrcill, director of athletics, will offer a welcome to honorees and Connie Dieken, Emmy award-winning broadcaster and author, will emcee the event.

Visit Akron Zips Title IX 40th Anniversary online to learn more about the event, UA’s all-time female award winners and watch video testimonials.

After the Title IX event, head on over to Coleman Common for the Faculty and Staff Appreciation event from noon to 1:30 p.m. (tickets required) and then see the Zips take on the Bowling Green Falcons at 2 p.m. at the stadium. Check out all the festivities on the Homecoming website.

Singer, Songwriter, Entrepreneur. These are just some of the words that can be used to describe Chinua Hawk. Born and raised in New Jersey, Chinua considers himself a citizen of the world. As a performer with hundreds of performances under his belt, Chinua captivates audiences all over the world with the simplicity and class that defines his career. “My show is very simple -- what you see is what you get,” says Chinua. Chinua counts himself very fortunate to have performed with Celine Dion in front of a crowd of 30,000 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. He’s also written songs with Wyclef Jean and worked in the studio with producer/rapper Kanye West on rapper Talib Kwelis’ song “Just To Get By.”

Chinua’s other accomplishments include winning the Disc Makers Independent Music World Series in 2004, beating out over 1,000 bands with just a guitar player to accompany him.

The University of Akron's Zipmail is a compilation of University announcements for University students, sent each Friday unless circumstances require otherwise. The deadline for submissions to be considered by the University is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Zipmail is a University of Akron communication vehicle established for the benefit of The University of Akron to communicate with its students. Items will be accepted for publication only when the University is directly involved in the activity through participation, sponsorship, or partnership with one of its recognized organizations, colleges or departments. The University reserves the right to edit or to refuse to run any submission for any reason. Zipmail is not, nor is it intended to be, a public forum or a limited public forum. Questions about the implementation of this policy may be directed to zipmail@uakron.edu.

Items to be considered for inclusion in Zipmail should be sent through the Zipmail Event Submission Form. Due to the volume of submissions received, items will not run more than one time.

Questions about specific announcements should be made to the contact person/department/organization listed in the announcement.Your event will automatically be forwarded to the University's online calendar. The Zipmail Coordinator can be reached at x2837.
