Ever feel like you got meal swipes, but NO need for junk food? Ever wonder how you as a poor college student can help those who aren't as well off as you? Well, if so, I got just the thing!

Join in the cause to brighten someone's day by doing what you normally do every week. Use some of those EXTRA meal swipes (worth $5 at the Zees stores) to collect some food for the poor. Just BUY, BAG, and DROP any NON-PERISHABLE food items in the boxes in the Zees stores. They are collected and taken to the nearest food pantry.

Serving with Swipes: a great way to help those in need!

A special uArts event is planned at the Akron Art Museum on Oct. 20 — UA students, who already have free year-round admission to the museum, can bring their family members to the museum for free — just show your Zip Card.

The Family Day/Employee Appreciation Day event, which continues from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., is part of the growing uArts initiative. You can enjoy a free beverage and snack in the museum reception area, and all of the museum’s exhibits, which include:

Robert Stivers: Veiled Image,” through Jan. 20, 2013

Self-taught in the art of photography, Robert Stivers’ evocative combination of technique and imagery results in entrancing, disjointed narratives that push the imagination to fill in the details of the story. The exhibit is curated by UA alumnus Arnold Tunstall.

The Anniversary Show: Commemorative Art Through the Years,” through Feb. 3, 2013

As part of the ongoing celebration of the museum’s 90th anniversary the Corbin Gallery features an exhibition of works commissioned over several decades. The museum has a long history of commissioning artworks by local artists including paintings, photographs, print design, jewelry and pottery to commemorate milestones, anniversaries and special events. UA alumnae Cristina Alexander and Ellie Ward are curators of the exhibit, which Includes works by UA alumni and professors.

For more information on exhibits, visit the Akron Art Museum online. You can stay up-to-date on museum exhibits, events and special offers with a free subscription to its monthly newsletter. Just visit Art Museum Newsletter to sign up.

The Akron Art Museum is located at One South High St., just two blocks from Quaker Square. Free parking will be available in the nearby Akron-Summit County Public Library deck.

Psychology Museum Tour Oct. 22

spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
From the Tour Guide:

Part of the tour is self-guided through the museum space and the length of time spent in there is really dependent on how much time you take to go through it. Some people are done in ˝ hour while others can take more than an hour. The other part of the tour is the behind-the-scenes access. You will get to see the Reading Room, our work area and the storage facilities. This can take anywhere from ˝ hour to an hour, depending on questions and interest level. I think 2-4 is plenty of time and more than likely you will have some time to spare. After we will head to Bricco for dinner.

Please email me as the date gets closer so we can confirm a group total.

Student advisory: No need to pay for financial aid services

A private company with no affiliation to the University is offering to help UA students complete the federal financial aid application for a hefty $65 fee.

The same service is provided free to students by our financial aid office, says Michelle Ellis, executive director of the Office of Student Financial Aid. UA's financial aid counselors will work with students, and the U.S. Department of Education does not charge anyone to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

A company called the Student Financial Resource Center has been sending the letters. UA's financial aid counselors have been receiving calls from students and parents asking if the service is legitimate.

"I have worked in this field for about 18 years," Ellis said, "and we see these offers from time to time. It's not necessary to pay the fee to get assistance. We encourage anyone who has questions about the financial aid process to come talk with us. We'll help them for free."

You can stop by the Student Services Center in the lobby of Simmons Hall for assistance, or call the Office of Student Financial Aid at 330-972-7032 or write to finaid@uakron.edu.
