Men's Soccer vs. Creighton - 3rd Round of NCAA Tournament
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The Men's Soccer team advanced to the NCAA's Round of 16 for the fifth consecutive season with a 2-1 victory over Michigan last night. The fifth-seeded Zips will host 12th-seeded Creighton on Sunday, Nov. 25, at 4:30 p.m. at FirstEnergy Stadium - Cub Cadet Field. Creighton, which Akron played to a 1-all draw during the regular season, defeated Washington, 4-2, in its second-round match.

The Zips will not host another round of the NCAA Tournament unless fourth-seeded Connecticut falls to New Mexico on Sunday.

Coach Porter has purchased 300 tickets for the AK-Rowdies, which will be distributed at the March to the Match, beginning at 3 p.m. These tickets will be offered to AK-Rowdies members first and, if any are remaining, then to non-Rowdie members.

If you are unable to receive one of the complimentary tickets, the ticket office at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field will open at 3 p.m. on Sunday. It is located by Gate 1.

Graduating?

Below are some tips for planning to repay student loans.

Source: November 6, 2012 US News and World Report article:
"How to Start Paying Off Student Loans"

1. Know what you owe: If your loans have been building, a crucial first step is to know what you're working with. On the National Student Loan Data System, students can locate all their federal loans and find debt totals, including accumulated interest.

2. Contact your loan servicer: Once you know how much you owe, find out exactly who you'll be sending checks to—your student loan servicer.

3. Pick a repayment plan (www.direct.ed.gov/RepayCalc) The standard repayment plan for student loans is 10 years, but that doesn't necessarily make it the right option for every student.
Some borrowers of federal student loans, for example, may be better off opting into Income-Based Repayment or Income-Contingent Repayment plans, which adjust monthly bills according to pay.

4. Stick to a budget: Once you determine a monthly obligation, keep track of other spending to ensure you can pay all your bills.

5. Prioritize your loan payments: As you budget, you may find yourself forgoing activities or events to pay off your debt.

6. Focus on the future: If you find you're scrimping or sacrificing to make your monthly student loan payments, it may help to remind yourself what you're paying for.

Students – Take advantage of Peer Mentoring Services by The Office of Multicultural Development!
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The Office of Multicultural Development provides a variety of academic programs and services to help support the University’s goals of recruiting and retaining multicultural students, and promoting a culture of student success.

Peer Mentoring Services strives to provide students with a welcoming and supportive environment that models and encourages excellence.  Mentoring is a one-on-one relationship between an upperclassman University of Akron student (mentor) and a new first-year student (mentee).  This relationship develops over a one-year period of time with clearly defined roles and expectations. The upper-class student (mentor) is knowledgeable, experienced, and willing to share his/her time, energy, and talents with you, the student (mentee). If you are not a first year student, do not worry! We also are proud to accept any willing student in search of a mentor. Through regular meetings and activities, mentors will help their mentees discover the potential within themselves to succeed in their personal, academic, and professional endeavors.

We encourage you to sign-up to get a Peer Mentor today!  The Office of Multicultural Development strives to help students develop a sense of belonging to our campus community and an increased level of motivation and pride. This will enhance the overall college experience and, ultimately, prepare students for success in the classroom and beyond.

Please think about becoming a part of this great program!  Students can sign-up to get a Peer Mentor online at https://www.uakron.edu/webforms/as-enrollment.dot or by visiting Simmons Hall 124.  For questions, contact Autumn Frampton at ext. 8660 or autumn@uakron.edu.

Join in the cause to brighten someone's day by doing what you normally do every week. Use some of those EXTRA meal swipes (worth $5 at the Zees stores) to collect some food for the poor. Just BUY, BAG, and DROP any NON-PERISHABLE food items in the boxes in the Zees stores. They are collected and taken to the nearest food pantry.

spacer image
Date: Tuesday November 27, 2012
Time: 7:17pm
Location: SU Starbucks

Some exciting news! Joanna has announced that she will be performing at the 2012 LGBT Pride Festival in Asbury Park, NJ on Sunday June 3rd. Headlining will be Deborah Cox .

In addition to producing 2 records this summer, she will also be on tour in July so check the dates below for more.

What's so great about this music? Joanna, as a musician, doesn't necessarily want to rock her audience, though she wouldn't be adverse to this idea of rocking, she wants to move them... and groove them where necessary. And she wants them to come away remembering something that felt like it was written about them personally.

Citing influences from Aretha Franklin and Mariah Carey to Rufus Wainwright and Fiona Apple, she has concocted a delicious mixture of style, satisfying all of those interests.
