All Computer Services Will Be Unavailable October 30-31

spacer image
spacer image
All computing and network services provided by the Computer Center — including e-mail, Internet, dial-up access, VPN, PeopleSoft, all Web sites (including ZipLine and WebCT), network logins, computer-based testing and related services — will be unavailable starting at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 30, until about noon Sunday, October 31.

The outage will affect the Zip Print system as well, meaning that lab managers and building coordinators will be unable to send print jobs from workstations to lab printers.

Zip Cards will not work in copy machines, either.

During the outage, you can call (330) 972-7187 to learn the status of the work. This number will revert to normal use Monday, November 1.

This outage is necessary to allow the installation of a backup electrical generator. The generator will provide backup power for the Computer Center in the event of a commercial power outage. The installation is expected to take 8 to 12 hours. All power to the Computer Center must be shut down during the work.

The work is being done now to ensure the generator is operational prior to the start of spring registration Friday, November 5.

Pre-Law Club to Host Kaplan LSAT Prep Nov. 3

Is it almost time for you to take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT)? Would you like to take a practice test, but simply don't have enough time to do so? If so, please consider attending the Kaplan "10 Question Challenge," an event hosted by the Pre-Law Club. At the event, you will be given ten difficult LSAT questions and then a professional from Kaplan will explain effective ways to answer.

To attend any of the 202 law schools that are members of the Law School Admission Council, you must take the LSAT. This event is an excellent way to prepare yourself for that test without the time commitment and stress of taking a full practice LSAT.

This event is free, and open to club members and non-members alike, but those who wish to participate must notify Holly Johnston ahead of time at hej3@uakron.edu or register online at the address below.

Latinas’ Changing Stories of Abuse Nov. 4

spacer image
spacer image

spacer image
A public lecture by Professor Shonna Trinch, Florida State University, is being sponsored by the Departments of Modern Languages, Sociology, Psychology, and Classical Studies, Anthropology, and Archeology.

Description of the talk:

Because valid witness testimony in the American legal system is supposedly invariable and unchanging, defense attorneys highlight apparent inconsistencies in victims’ accounts to impugn their credibility. This lecture examines how and why Latina women victims of domestic violence might appear to be ‘changing their stories’ while being processed by the criminal justice system, often leaving themselves vulnerable to attack and criticism. The lecture investigates the discourse of protective order interviews, where women apply for court injunctions to keep abusers away. In these encounters, two different versions of violence, each influenced by a range of ethnolinguistic, intertextual and cultural factors, are always produced. This ethnography of Latina women narrating violence suggests that before victims even get to trial, their testimony involves much more than merely telling the truth. On the contrary, the data presented here suggests that pre-trial testimony as a collaborative and dynamic sociocultural act.
