Students are encouraged to check their spring 2013 schedules via My Akron.

• Log into My Akron with your UANet ID and password.
• Click on the “My Experience” tab, and then select “Student Center”.
• Information regarding course meeting times, days and room location is given in real-time; in other words, all information is up to date as it is retrieved.

The Office of the University Registrar sends an e-mail to the instructor of record and all enrolled students’ UANet e-mail address when there is a classroom change made in the course(s) they are enrolled. It is recommended that instructors and students check their UANet e-mail often for any important messages from the University as this will be the official means of notification used by the Office of the University Registrar.

Guidance for military service students who must miss class Jan. 14

The University is a “Veteran Friendly” institution and recognizes its obligations to our students who serve in the military, including the National Guard. Although there is a University-level expectation that all students will attend their classes at the designated meeting times, syllabi should clearly outline specific attendance policies for each course.

For students who currently serve in the military and will miss classes for short-term military leave or for military-training exercises, we recommend that they contact their instructors as soon as they become aware so that arrangements can be made.

In the rare case that unresolved issues arise due to absences from a course because of service in the military, we recommend that the student first contact the chair of the department through which the course is offered. If the student is still unsatisfied with the result, he or she should speak with the dean of the college and, if necessary later, with the Office of Academic Affairs.

As always, the Military Services Center is open in Simmons Hall 120 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, to assist. Students are also welcome to contact the center by telephone at 330-972-7838 or by e-mail at veterans@uakron.edu for assistance with any issues encountered here at UA.

Photo exhibit: Submit image that depicts your Akron Experience

UA Photo Exhibit is a chance for you to share a part of your Akron Experience with the UA community.

All current UA students are invited to submit one photo that may be chosen for display in the Student Union. Photos should depict what your Akron Experience looks like to you. As part of a new art initiative in the Student Union, photos will be displayed for up to one year in the building.

Submissions should be emailed to UAPhotos12@gmail.com, should be a maximum file size of 25MB, and should be a high quality print photograph.

Please include in your submission: Name, Address, Phone Number, Student ID #, Email Address, and Title of Photo. Submissions are due January 31, 2013.

Photographs that are submitted will be juried by a group of students, faculty, and staff. If your work is chosen for the display we will let you know via email. By submitting your images to UA Photo Exhibit you give The University of Akron permission to keep a copy of your image and/or display it publicly. The University’s virtual lab will be unavailable beginning Friday night, 1/11, from 10:00 p.m. and all day Saturday, 1/12.

The company that provides the service, Desktone/Quest, will perform maintenance on the virtual lab environment. Following that, the University will configure the virtual lab for the Spring semester.

The Virtual lab will be available at approximately 12:00 a.m. Sunday 1/13.

The Institute for Leadership Advancement is putting together Leadership Development Groups (LDGs). The LDG will be composed of six students each and be solely run by those students. Each LDG will meet 1 hour per week where they will engage in individual and group activities that will create self-awareness in each student of their strengths, how they acquired those strengths, and how to use those strengths to their advantage throughout life.

This program is designed for self-motivated students who want to better themselves and by doing so better the people around them. The UAMC is an open ensemble, meaning anyone who wishes may join; NO AUDITION NEEDED!

Our music ranges from the 1500's to today. Classical, pop, folk and world music are all a part of what we do.

We offer opportunities for leadership through the election of officers every semester. Nominations are open to new members.

The Men's Chorus is also offered as a 1 credit course. Individuals wishing to receive credit for their time in the ensemble may sign up for course no. 7510 105-004 through My Akron. Registration is optional.

We are pleased to announce that The University of Akron’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Activities Fair is scheduled for Monday, January 21, 2013, from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., in the campus Student Union.

This event enables the community to utilize the Martin Luther King Holiday as a “day on” rather than a “day off”! It also serves as an opportunity for community outreach that provides awareness of the University community to children in grades K-12 and their families. The celebration has been very well-received and attended, and the children enjoy the excitement and activities of being on a college campus.

Community and student organizations provide activities and information that encourage non-violence, civic responsibility, respect for differences, and the importance of education. Activities will include the following:
• Face painting
• Jewelry making, Balloons and Treats
• Coloring and Crafts
• Biographic information on Martin Luther King Jr.

UA's Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is designed to raise awareness of social issues and injustices through educational and volunteer-focused opportunities and provide a variety of low cost, 3- or 5-day service experience.

All ASB 2013 trips will travel during the week of Saturday, March 24 and all trips cost $250 and include food, lodging, transportation and recreational activities!

The University of Akron is once again serving as the Summit County host of College Goal Sunday on Feb. 10, beginning at 2 p.m. in Simmons Hall. The college financial aid event is presented annually at sites around the state by the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA) and is endorsed by the Ohio Board of Regents.

College Goal Sunday is designed to provide assistance to students and parents in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is the application that is required to be completed to receive federal financial aid, including the Federal Pell Grant and student loans as well as need-based state grants.

This is a free event, and is open to current college students at any institution, as well as prospective students planning to attend a college in Ohio or out-of-state, and their parents. Registration is not required, but is encouraged. To register for College Goal Sunday, visit www.ohiocollegegoalsunday.org, or call 1-800-233-6734.

The Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA) is a nonprofit, professional organization for individuals actively engaged in the administration of financial aid within the state of Ohio for higher education.
