UA to unveil new ad theme during Super Bowl Sunday
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
As has become a University of Akron tradition, UA will unveil a new advertising theme during the 2013 Super Bowl, Sunday, Feb. 3.

“This year, it's all about what we call 'connected knowledge,'” says Luis M. Proenza, president of The University of Akron. “The essence of The Akron Experience is to provide students with the knowledge to help solve difficult problems in today's society, and connect students with resources and opportunities to ensure their success during college and after graduation.”

The advertising campaign includes television spots, print and online advertising. As in the past, UA's commercial will run regionally during the game at a much lower rate than what advertisers pay for a national spot.

“Our Super Bowl launch is designed to reach a broad audience throughout our region with a strong message about the quality of education here at The University of Akron,” says Wayne Hill, chief marketing officer and associate vice president. “In the world of advertising, it's important to make a memorable impact. The technology behind the visuals in the 30-second spot delivers that high impact message to millions of viewers in northeast Ohio.”

The television ad features President Proenza who is beginning his fifteenth year at the helm of the University. He has spoken often of three guiding principles of university engagement: Relevance, Connectivity and Productivity: “Merging innovation with broad-based education makes UA more relevant, more connected to the community and more productive in terms of economic, social and human wellbeing.”

In this ad, President Proenza speaks of how the campus community creates knowledge through research, connects that knowledge with business and industry to solve problems, connects students with opportunities to give them a head start in their career, and connects communities to improve our region and the world.

NEED A JOB? AND WANT TO HELP OUT OTHERS BECOME A PEER MENTOR! Students – Take advantage of Peer Mentoring Services

spacer image
Students – Take advantage of Peer Mentoring Services by The Office of Multicultural Development!

The Office of Multicultural Development provides a variety of academic programs and services to help support the University’s goals of recruiting and retaining multicultural students, and promoting a culture of student success.
Peer Mentoring Services strives to provide students with a welcoming and supportive environment that models and encourages excellence. Mentoring is a one-on-one relationship between an upperclassman University of Akron student (mentor) and a new first-year student (mentee). This relationship develops over a one-year period of time with clearly defined roles and expectations. The upper-class student (mentor) is knowledgeable, experienced, and willing to share his/her time, energy, and talents with their student mentee. We are proud to accept any willing student in search of becoming a mentor. Through regular meetings and activities, mentors will help their mentees discover the potential within themselves to succeed in their personal, academic, and professional endeavors.
We encourage you to sign-up to become a Peer Mentor today! The Office of Multicultural Development strives to help students develop a sense of belonging to our campus community and an increased level of motivation and pride. This will enhance the overall college experience and, ultimately, prepare students for success in the classroom and beyond.

For more information, two informational Sessions will be held on:
Friday, February 1st from 3:00 - 4:00 pm
Thursday, March 7th from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
Both meetings will be held in Simmons Hall Room 101

Please consider becoming a part of this great program! Students can sign-up to apply for a Peer Mentoring position online at https://www.uakron.edu/webforms/peer-mentor-app.dot. For questions, contact Autumn Frampton at ext. 8660 or autumn@uakron.edu.

Looking to get involved? Looking to make a change in student's lives? Then look no further! The Undergraduate Student Government Senate is looking for a Senator for the College of Education and for the College of Engineering. It is not a requirement to be a part of either of these colleges, we simply require that you have a passion for representing your fellow students!

As a Senator, you will be expected to represent your academic college and to attend weekly Senate meetings as well as weekly committee meetings. Senators are also required to hold a minimum of four office hours per week. Finally, all USG members are required to be in good academic standing with the University of Akron, maintain at least 12 credit hours, and at least a 2.0 GPA.

Applications can be submitted electronically at https://uakron.edu/sg/asg/apply.dot and are due by January 25. Just remember to choose Senate as your area of interest, and then send a cover letter and resume to usgSenateChair@uakron.edu. Interviews will be held the following week and an applicant will be chosen from among those interviewed.

Guidance for military service students who must miss class Jan. 14
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University is a “Veteran Friendly” institution and recognizes its obligations to our students who serve in the military, including the National Guard. Although there is a University-level expectation that all students will attend their classes at the designated meeting times, syllabi should clearly outline specific attendance policies for each course.

For students who currently serve in the military and will miss classes for short-term military leave or for military-training exercises, we recommend that they contact their instructors as soon as they become aware so that arrangements can be made.

In the rare case that unresolved issues arise due to absences from a course because of service in the military, we recommend that the student first contact the chair of the department through which the course is offered. If the student is still unsatisfied with the result, he or she should speak with the dean of the college and, if necessary later, with the Office of Academic Affairs.

As always, the Military Services Center is open in Simmons Hall 120 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, to assist. Students are also welcome to contact the center by telephone at 330-972-7838 or by e-mail at veterans@uakron.edu for assistance with any issues encountered here at UA.

Do you have a meal plan that leaves you with too many meal swipes to use up at the end of the
week? Are you unsure of what to get, but don't want to waste you hard earned college funds? Well if
so, here is the solution!!!

Serving with Swipes is a non-profit student organization in which you can use your unused meal
swipes to donate food to the nearby food pantry. This is a great way to help those who are less
fortunate while also learning not to be wasteful.

Just use your extra meal swipes at the Zees stores to purchase nonperishable, canned, or boxed
foods. Drop them in the boxes located in the Zees stores at Exchange, Rob's Cafe, Quaker Square,
or the Student Union.

Serving with Swipes-A great way to give back to the community and help those who are less
fortunate.

The Network of Enlightened Women (NeW) proudly presents the Second Annual Gentleman’s Showcase – March Madness style. NeW is on a mission to find the gentlemen that we know exist at UA!

What is a gentleman? He opens the door for you without expecting anything in return; he shovels a neighbor’s car out of the snow; he helps an older woman carry her groceries; he treats you like the lady you are; and he is confident but not conceited.

Do you know a gentleman who fits this description? Click on the link below to nominate him:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dFprMXJIUFJIbjN2RFdQUnFpYjlQZHc6MQ#gid=0

The top 16 will be voted on by students to determine the top gentleman in our community. The winner will receive a gift certificate for dinner for two at a local restaurant.

Nominations will be accepted now through Friday, March 1st at NOON, and voting begins the following Monday, March 4th.

Recyclemania Feb. 3 - March 30

UA joins in Recyclemania competition

Did you know? In 2012, the University of Akron saved enough energy by recycling its paper and cardboard to heat 220 homes for 6 months.

Annually, the University competes in the international recycling contest — Recyclemania — now under way at schools across the country. Throughout the competition, which continues through March 30, recyclable materials are collected and measured from each participating building and residence hall on campus. At the end of the competition the total weight of each recyclable material is reported to the Recyclemania committee and considered in the overall ranking. UA's goal with Recyclemania is to foster campus-wide enthusiasm for recycling and continuing efforts to reduce the waste stream.

The winning school in each of the seven categories in the competition will be recognized on the Recyclemania website. Winning schools will also receive a trophy made entirely of recycled materials. So remember, in order to win we must reduce our waste, reuse appropriate materials and then recycle.

In addition to the Recyclemania competition, Kent State has challenged UA to a supplemental competition, dubbed the “Braggin' Wheel.”

For more information on what materials UA is currently recycling, please visit the Campus Recycling website, or contact Andrew Henry, recycling superintendent, at ext. 6019 or andrewh@uakron.edu.

The PB&J Outreach program is a non-profit program that provides food for the weekend to children attending Mason Elementary School in Akron, OH. The program was started in 2009 after a study showed that these children, who have breakfast and lunch provided to them through the school during the week, were not getting enough food to eat during the weekends.
Each week, 60 children are provided with bags of food containing enough food for 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and 2 snacks to eat on Saturdays and Sundays. The funding for these meals comes completely from grants and individual donations.

We meet at the First Congrgational Church on Friday afternoon at 12:30 and once we are finished packing we travel to Mason Elementary and pass out the food to the children.

This is a great opportunity to gain service hours and show your support to the community!

The Career Center and the Office of International Programs are collaborating to present the "Integrating Education Abroad into Your Job Search" workshop for returned education abroad participants.

In today's globalized economy and with an increasing diverse US population, education abroad experience can be a valuable asset for students beginning their career. However, research shows that applicants must be able to present that experience in a way it's relevant to the hiring official. "Integrating Education Abroad into Your Job Search" will help students learn how to include their education abroad experience on a resume and to speak about it in an interview.
