spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University of Akron is once again serving as the Summit County host of College Goal Sunday on Feb. 10, beginning at 2 p.m. in Simmons Hall.

The college financial aid event is presented annually at sites around the state by the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA) and is endorsed by the Ohio Board of Regents.

UA's Wayne College Holmes County Higher Education Center also is a site for the event. The center is located at 88-B East Jackson St., Millersburg (map).

College Goal Sunday is designed to provide assistance to students and parents in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is the application that is required to be completed to receive federal financial aid, including the Federal Pell Grant and student loans as well as need-based state grants.

This is a free event, and is open to current college students at any institution, as well as prospective students planning to attend a college in Ohio or out-of-state, and their parents. Registration is not required, but is encouraged. To register for College Goal Sunday, visit www.ohiocollegegoalsunday.org, or call 1-800-233-6734.

The Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA) is a nonprofit, professional organization for individuals actively engaged in the administration of financial aid within the state of Ohio for higher education. As an educational organization, OASFAA strives to offer resources to students, families and high school advisors to promote higher education and increase awareness of financial aid opportunities.

University seeks smokers' cooperation
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
To comply with Ohio's Smoke-Free Workplace Law, UA forbids smoking in any enclosed area, including buildings, parking decks and University vehicles.

To comply with the requirements of this law and to help ensure that tobacco smoke does not enter any area in which smoking is prohibited, no smoking is permitted within 25 feet of an entranceway, window or ventilation system of any University building or enclosed area.

The law also requires that the University remove cigarette receptacles from areas on campus where smoking is prohibited. That means that smokers will have to fully extinguish their cigarettes when done and then place them in receptacles that are located at least 25 feet from the entranceway of University buildings.

The University is asking all smokers to be mindful of the restrictions in and around buildings, to be cautious and courteous when discarding cigarettes and to refrain from removing cigarette receptacles from their intended locations.

More information is available on the Ohio Department of Health's Web site.

The Network of Enlightened Women (NeW) proudly presents the Second Annual Gentleman’s Showcase – March Madness style. NeW is on a mission to find the gentlemen that we know exist at UA!

What is a gentleman? He opens the door for you without expecting anything in return; he shovels a neighbor’s car out of the snow; he helps an older woman carry her groceries; he treats you like the lady you are; and he is confident but not conceited.

Do you know a gentleman who fits this description? Click on the link below to nominate him:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dFprMXJIUFJIbjN2RFdQUnFpYjlQZHc6MQ#gid=0

The top 16 will be voted on by students to determine the top gentleman in our community. The winner will receive a gift certificate for dinner for two at a local restaurant.

Nominations will be accepted now through Friday, March 1st at NOON, and voting begins the following Monday, March 4th.

Do you have a meal plan that leaves you with too many meal swipes to use up at the end of the week? Are you unsure of what to get, but don't want to waste you hard earned college funds? Well if so, here is the solution!!!

Serving with Swipes is a non-profit student organization in which you can use your unused meal swipes to donate food to the nearby food pantry. This is a great way to help those who are less fortunate while also learning not to be wasteful.

Just use your extra meal swipes at the Zees stores to purchase nonperishable, canned, or boxed foods. Drop them in the boxes located in the Zees stores at Exchange, Rob's Cafe, Quaker Square, or the Student Union.

Serving with Swipes-A great way to give back to the community and help those who are less fortunate.

Integrating Education Abroad into Your Job Search Feb. 13

spacer image
The Career Center and the Office of International Programs are collaborating to present the "Integrating Education Abroad into Your Job Search" workshop for returned education abroad participants.

In today's globalized economy and with an increasingly diverse US population, education abroad experience can be a valuable asset for students beginning their career. However, research shows that applicants must be able to present that experience in a way it's relevant to the hiring official. "Integrating Education Abroad into Your Job Search" will help students learn how to include their education abroad experience on a resume and to speak about it in an interview.

Join us Wednesday, January 13th, 12-1:00 PM in Student Union 316.

The Negro and the American Promise Feb. 15

spacer image
Join us at the Center for the History of Psychology on Friday, February 15, at 2 p.m. for a special, one-time screening of the film “The Negro and the American Promise.”

In the spring of 1963 Dr. Kenneth B. Clark, a professor of psychology at the City College of New York, interviewed separately Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Minister Malcolm X, and author James Baldwin in order to examine and discuss the racial climate of America. This thought provoking film depicts the varying perspectives of three passionate, powerful leaders in the Black community.

The film was produced by WGBH Boston for National Education Television and originally aired on educational channels in the spring and summer of 1963. The Center will project the 16mm film with permission from PBS.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the film and while the event is free and open to the public space is limited. Please email ahap@uakron.edu to reserve your spot or for more information. Visit the Center for the History of Psychology’s website at www.uakron.edu/chp.
