FRAUDULENT CALLER POSES AS GREAT LAKES EMPLOYEE Nov. 5

Fraudulent Caller Poses as Great Lakes Employee

Great Lakes Educational Higher Education Corporation (GLHEC) and Affiliates has been informed that a student recently received two telephone calls from someone posing as a Great Lakes employee. This supposed Great Lakes caller was offering the student a $10,000 scholarship and needed the student to confirm her address, phone number and bank account number so that the money could be sent.

This appears to be similar to the scam several months ago that was perpetrated using the U.S. Department of Education as the scholarship grantor. Like the Department in that situation, GLHEC would like to remind students to be cautious with telephone calls and email contacts that offer scholarships or grants in exchange for personal identification and financial data.

As required, Great Lakes has reported this incident to the Region V Office
of Inspector General. We are posting an alert on our website for our
student borrowers. If you hear of any related activity, please contact:

UA Closes Parking Loophole
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University’s Board of Trustees on Wednesday approved a recommendation to close a loophole used by some people who park in University lots but avoid paying for parking permits. Effective Jan. 1, 2005, a new parking-fine schedule will be implemented in an effort to cut down on the number of people who were taking their chances that paying tickets for a semester would cost less than buying a permit.

“Most of our students and employees pay for parking, and they should not need to compete for a space with someone who has not bought a permit,” said Jim Stafford, director of parking services. “It is a question of fairness.”

Starting in January, most violations will cost $25, up from $10. Each additional violation will cost $5 more, to a maximum of $35.

“Our goal is not to increase parking-fine revenue, but to protect those people who pay for permits,” Stafford said. “The new fines will affect only those who are trying to skirt the system. The cost of permits is not changing, and our enforcement policy will remain the same.”

A survey of 30 universities nationwide by Parking Services revealed that Akron’s current $10 fine for violations is well below average, Stafford said. The new fine schedule places Akron in the middle of the pack.

Funds raised by permits and fines are used solely by Parking Services to maintain, clean and monitor parking areas, and to pay off bonds issued to construct decks and lots.

Parking Lot West of Honors Complex to Close Saturday
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The small parking lot between the Honors Complex and Bulger Hall will close Saturday to allow workers to seal and re-stripe the lot. When the lot reopens at the end of November, it will be a handicap-access area only.

Signs are in place informing drivers of Saturday’s closure. Cars that remain in the lot on Saturday will be towed at the owner’s expense. On University maps, the lot is No. 22.

As work on the lot continues, drivers with a handicap-parking permit may park in designated spots on the second and third floors of the North Parking Deck. The designated spots are on the southwest and southeast corners of the deck. Elevator access is nearby.

Handicap access areas are also located in the lot east of the Union Street Building at Buchtel Avenue and Fir Hill Street (also known as Lot 14).

If you have any questions, call Parking Services at ext. 7213.

Student Social Work League (SSWL) and Golden Key International Honour Society are joining together to collect suitcases for foster kids. We want to give them the dignity to have a suitcase/duffle bag and personal care items to take with them as they move around. They usually just get a garbage bag for everything.

Donations will be in the Polsky Building, Room 411 and in the Student Union for the entire month of November. Hopefully we can brighten the holiday season for some kids. Want to join us?

Imagine this… you’re sitting in the front row and several of your good friends are on stage to volunteer for Michael C. Anthony’s performance. Michael utters a few words, snaps his fingers, and you see your friends, one by one, drop to the floor sound asleep. Michael then works is his “magic” and upon awakening, one of your friends jumps to her feet, grabs the microphone, and starts singing because she believes she is Madonna. Another friend has a horrified look on his face because he can’t remember his name no matter how hard he tries. Somebody else is frantically scratching all over her body from imaginary insects. All along your most intelligent friend has been rolling all over the sage in combat, shooing invisible aliens with his shoe!

The University of Akron's Zipmail is a compilation of University announcements for University students, sent each Friday unless circumstances require otherwise. The deadline for submissions to be considered by the University is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Zipmail is a University of Akron communication vehicle established for the benefit of The University of Akron to communicate with its students. Items will be accepted for publication only when the University is directly involved in the activity through participation, sponsorship, or partnership with one of its recognized organizations, colleges or departments. The University reserves the right to edit or to refuse to run any submission for any reason. Zipmail is not, nor is it intended to be, a public forum or a limited public forum. Questions about the implementation of this policy may be directed to zipmail@uakron.edu.

Items to be considered for inclusion in Zipmail should be sent through the Zipmail Event Submission Form. Due to the volume of submissions received, items will not run more than one time.

Questions about specific announcements should be made to the contact person/department/organization listed in the announcement.Your event will automatically be forwarded to the University's online calendar. The Zipmail Coordinator can be reached at x2837.
