Leaders from other colleges and universities across the nation will be on campus March 3-6 to talk with students, faculty, staff and members of the University's Board of Trustees as part of a comprehensive evaluation of the University being conducted by the Higher Learning Commission.

The leaders have been reviewing a self-study we prepared in advance of their reaccreditation visit.  The goal of the visit is to validate the findings in the self-study.

We are one of more than 1,000 institutions accredited through the commission. The accreditation validates the quality of your degree, and it certifies that we are committed to a process of continuous improvement.

Team members will hold a number of forums on campus over the three days. Please attend the student forum if it doesn't interfere with class time:

Date: Monday, March 4

Time: 4 to 4:45 p.m.

Now, the team is competing with its BBT Shoe in the FLL Global Innovation Competition and it needs your vote in this worldwide competition. The top team will receive $20,000 to progress the winning innovation. Visit FLL Global Innovation online to vote for these young inventors. You can vote once a day until March 1.

Do you have a meal plan that leaves you with too many meal swipes to use up at the end of the week? Are you unsure of what to get, but don't want to waste you hard earned college funds? Well if so, here is the solution!!!

Serving with Swipes is a non-profit student organization in which you can use your unused meal swipes to donate food to the nearby food pantry. This is a great way to help those who are less fortunate while also learning not to be wasteful.

Just use your extra meal swipes at the Zees stores to purchase nonperishable, canned, or boxed foods. Drop them in the boxes located in the Zees stores at Exchange, Rob's Cafe, Quaker Square, or the Student Union.

Serving with Swipes-A great way to give back to the community and help those who are less fortunate.

Forums offer students China-study experience from comfort of UA campus March 7
5:50 pm - 6:50 pm

While some University of Akron students were snatching up Black Friday specials and ice-skating at Lock 3 during winter break, how did students from Henan University in Kaifeng spend their winter break? UA students will find out on Thursday, March 7, from 5:50 to 6:50 p.m. during the first Akron/Kaifeng Forum (AK Forum) for spring 2013 semester. During the informal, long-distance conversation from Leigh Hall 208 to Kaifeng, students will chat peer-to-peer in a “virtual living room” environment.

“The forums create a bridge between UA students and Henan University students,” says Confucius Institute professor Chengxin Zhao, an associate dean and associate professor in the International School for Chinese Language and Culture at Henan University. “The students get to know each other and learn what university life is like in the U.S. and in China.”

All UA students, faculty and staff are invited to the March 7 forum and others throughout the semester. Subsequent AK Forums will be held from 6:50 to 7:50 p.m., on March 14 and 21, and April 4, 11, 18 and 25. Sponsored by the Confucius Institute in collaboration with the Honors College and Henan University, the AK Forums focus on topics selected by students and range from college life to health care insurance.

"The AK Forum basically provides the study-abroad experience without the actual necessity to leave your hometown. I find that college students from China face much the same issues as we do in preparing for our future careers, showing that we're really far more similar than we think," says Tibor Gal, a senior majoring in international politics and French and minoring in Chinese.

For details about the forums, contact Nancy Easterling at nee@uakron.edu  or at 330-972-2013.

Our Flexible MBA allows students to study on a full-time or part-time basis. Students with any bachelor's degree are eligible to apply for admission. Students with science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medical backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

We offer an interdisciplinary concentration that allows you to take graduate credits outside of business to fulfill MBA requirements. Students admitted to any UA graduate program can shorten the MBA by applying coursework from the current program.

Coordinated programs with Engineering, Math, Statistics and the BS/MD program allow students to reduce Gateway requirements in the MBA by taking specific undergraduate elective courses in business and take graduate and undergraduate work concurrently.

The CBA also offers programs in Accountancy, Taxation, Information Systems, Technological Innovation and joint programs with the School of Law.

Bloomberg Business week ranked our Flexible MBA #1 in northeast Ohio and #34 in the nation. U.S. News and World Report also rated our program as the top public Flexible MBA in northern Ohio.

Register to attend the session online at mba.uakron.edu and meet with our advising staff to learn more about admission requirements and how the Flexible MBA is a good fit for your future!

“A World on Autopilot?: Atheism, Determinism, Ethics, and Evolution”

By August Berkshire

In the world premiere of this controversial and thought-provoking talk, August Berkshire will discuss the ramifications of a universe without gods and free will, where evolution reigns supreme. Is life worth living? How do we derive meaning and purpose in our lives? What does this say about ethics, cooperation, altruism, praise, blame, responsibility, crime, punishment, rehabilitation, and revenge? Should we be optimistic or pessimistic about the future?

August Berkshire is president of Minnesota Atheists and a past vice president of Atheist Alliance International. He has been an atheist activist since 1984 and is the author of numerous pamphlets.
