International Education Week: November 13 - 19
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The Office of International Programs invites you to help us celebrate International Education Week from Monday, November 13 to Friday, November 19. In addition to culture, music, and movies from different parts of the world, we are focusing on "Make the World Your Campus," as our theme for the week. To help students gain an understanding of how small the world really is, we are highlighting several of the different programs offered through the Office of International Programs.

There will be an international fair, films, panel discussions, a BaFa BaFa cross-cultural simulation, dance lessons, as well as speakers presenting different perspectives on Globalization. The Office of International Programs and the international community at The University of Akron believe that it is vitally important to educate ourselves about the world from a variety of perspectives.

We invite everyone to attend and participate in the presentations and discussions of the week.

Student Groups can Apply for Funding
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University of Akron sets aside a portion of students’ general service fees to provide financial assistance to registered student organizations and other student activities on our campus. This fund is called the Extracurricular Activities Fund (EAF). The Extracurricular Activities Fund exists to encourage programs, activities, leadership development and other diverse opportunities to direct the University student toward a more valuable college experience.

Budget Prep Meetings are held so that registered student organizations can learn about the application process for funding. Fund meetings are scheduled for the following dates:

Wednesday, November 17, 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., Student Union, Room 310
Monday, November 22, 11:00 a.m. to noon, Student Union, Room 335
Monday, November 22, 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Student Union, Room 335
Tuesday, November 30, noon to 1:00 p.m., Student Union, Room 335

It is important that at least one member of each student organization attend a meeting, preferably the person completing the application. This past year, many student organizations did not receive their full funding request because of inaccurate or incomplete information. These meetings are designed to help you understand the requirements of accurately filling out the funding request.

The EAF application deadline is Monday, February 7 at 5:00 p.m. to the Source in the Student Union (located on the 1st floor directly across from the Game Room). After the EAF November meetings, the EAF application will be available online at http://www.uakron.edu/studentaff.
Student organizations that are not registered will not be eligible to apply for the EAF funds. Call (330) 972-7002 with questions.

Letters From Santa
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
If you would like a child or friend to receive a personalized letter from Santa Claus, here is your chance! Alpha Delta Pi Sorority will be mailing the personalized letters (with the child's name) to each child's home before Christmas to spread some extra holiday cheer. We suggest a two dollar donation for the benefit of the Ronald McDonald House in Akron. The Ronald McDonald House provides a place to stay for families with children in the intensive care unit or other units at the Akron Children's Hospital. The Ronald McDonald House provides these services at little or no cost to the occupants; the charity is funded through generous donations from the community. If you are unable to donate but feel a child deserves a letter from Santa to brighten their Christmas season, we would be happy to help! Please make checks payable to Alpha Delta Pi. Feel free to send letters to more than one child by listing their information as well.

spacer image
The first film in the International Education Week celebration is "Neuve Reinas (Nine Queens)," an Argentine drama written and directed by Fabian Beilinsky. The film stars two grifters - boyish, likable Juan and hard-edged, scheming Marcos - who are enlisted by an old-time conman to sell a forged set of extremely valuable, rare stamps, The Nine Queens. The tricky negotiations that ensue bring into the picture a cast of suspicious characters, including Marcos' sister, Valeria, their younger brother, Federico, and a slew of thieves, conmen and pickpockets. As the deceptions mount, it becomes more and more difficult to figure out who is conning whom.

Free Admission, refreshments will be provided.

BaFa' BaFa' - A cross-cultural simulation Nov. 18

After an initial briefing, two cultures will be created. The Alpha culture and the Beta culture, which speaks a "foreign" language made up of vowels and consonants. It is easy to learn and use but difficult to understand if one does not know the rules governing its use. After the participants learn the rules of their culture and begin living it, observers and visitors are exchanged. The resulting stereotyping, misperception, and misunderstanding becomes the gist for the debriefing.

Free admission and refreshments.
