UA's rec center among nation's best
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image

UA has one of the 25 best recreation centers in the nation, according to the website Best College Reviews.

Our Student Recreation and Wellness Center is ranked 14th nationally, and Akron is one of only three Ohio schools — Ohio State and University of Cincinnati are the others — to made the cut.

Of our center, the site said, "Akron is a smaller MAC school, but they punch above their weight class with their world class student recreation facilities. The University of Akron recreation complex is 295,000 feet and features a 56-foot rock climbing wall, a leisure pool, a spa, and a lazy river. So you've got an indoor water park basically bolted onto a killer gym included when you attend Akron. Just the thing needed to wait out the cold Ohio winters."

Jim Walczyk, director of student recreation and wellness services, said the Rec Center remains a popular draw. "As the facility approaches its 10th anniversary, it continues to impress, as we frequently receive compliments from students, prospective students and parents.

"A lot of that attests to the quality of our employees," he added. "They work hard daily to ensure that we're providing great programming and services in a clean, safe and welcoming environment. Everything we do supports the success of our students, faculty, staff and community." Story continues online.

The Bernard Osher Reentry Scholarship for Adult Students was established by The Bernard Osher Foundation to provide assistance to adult learners who otherwise might not be able to afford a college education. It offers a financial incentive, as well as important recognition, for the most qualified students to work toward degree completion and, ultimately, fulfill their career objectives.

Scholarship applications are now being taken through April 12 for the 2013-14 academic year, says Laura Conley, director of UA Adult Focus, which provides a variety of academic support services for adult learners.

Students selected to be Osher Scholars will:

  • Be between 25 and 50 years of age

  • Have been away from school for a minimum of 5 years

  • Be working toward the completion of first baccalaureate degree

  • Be enrolled full-time (carrying at least 12 hours)

  • Have a minimum of one semester completed at The University of Akron with a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA.

Eligible adult learners can apply online or obtain an application in the UA Adult Focus Office in Schrank Hall North 260. For more information, visit the UA Adult Focus website or call 330-972-5793.

“A World on Autopilot?: Atheism, Evolution, Ethics, and Determinism”

August Berkshire will discuss the ramifications of a natural, deterministic universe without gods or free will, in which evolution shapes our ethics and actions. Is life worth living? How do we derive meaning and purpose in our lives? Can we avoid fatalism? What does this say about ethics, cooperation, altruism, praise, blame, responsibility, crime, punishment, rehabilitation, and revenge? Should we be optimistic or pessimistic abou...t the future?

August Berkshire is a past president of Minnesota Atheists, a past vice president of Atheist Alliance International, and on the speakers bureau for the national Secular Student Alliance. He has been an atheist activist since 1984 and is the author of numerous pamphlets. He is the owner of the ATHEIST license plate for Minnesota and is proud to be listed in the reference book “Who’s Who in Hell.”

Following the event we will have a special communion of reason at The Lockview with August Berkshire.
