The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now available for 2013-14.

Current students must renew the FAFSA each year to be considered for federal and need-based aid.

It is helpful to have student and parent tax returns completed when submitting the FAFSA, but you are encouraged to file estimates if your taxes are not available. It is easy to correct your FAFSA after your taxes have been filed.

All students are encouraged to complete the FAFSA, even if you do not consider yourself to be needy. All federal aid, including non-need-based loans, are based on the FAFSA, so filing the application is a good way to be prepared in case you need assistance.

The University's FAFSA school code is 003123.

Successful U app video

The free app, designed by students for students, is designed to help you succeed in and out of the classroom.

You can tailor it to your self-identified interests and needs. When you first download and open the app, it asks about your interests in six areas:

  • academics and career,
  • financial awareness,
  • leadership and volunteerism,
  • personal growth and wellness,
  • health and fitness, and
  • personal relationships.

From there, you can set goals, learn about related campus programs and services, and be inspired by alumni and civic leaders. The app is designed to “push information” to you. For example, if you are interested in outdoor adventure, you will learn about the opportunity to rent camping equipment from the recreation center. If you want information to improve your fitness, you can browse for diet and workout tips.

oneShirt Challenge: Help UA collect clothing and win!
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
In collaboration with the national organization SustainU, UA will collect clothing, and other textiles, the week of April 15 as part of the oneShirt National Clothing Challenge. Over a hundred colleges and universities will compete for the title “Big Shirt on Campus” and national bragging rights! The campus that works with its community to collect the most clothing during the week will be declared the nationwide winner.

As a unique spin on giving, unknowing participants will be rewarded for their donations with merchandise, and other valuable prizes, throughout the week. For a chance to be caught ‘Green Handed’, recycle gently used clothing at one of the ten Planet Aid drop-off locations.

Help us and our partner Planet Aid collect clothing to benefit local charities. Donations can be brought to one of the ten Planet Aid clothing bins located across campus starting on Monday, April 15.

The oneShirt initiative is supported by: Department of Physical Facilities, Department of Student Life-Civic Engagement Programs, and Department of Residence Life and Housing.

Do you have a meal plan that leaves you with too many meal swipes to use up at the end of the

so, here is the solution!!!

Serving with Swipes is a non-profit student organization in which you can use your unused meal

fortunate while also learning not to be wasteful.

Just use your extra meal swipes at the Zees stores to purchase nonperishable, canned, or boxed
foods. Drop them in the boxes located in the Zees stores at Exchange, Rob's Cafe, Quaker Square,
or the Student Union.

The Center for the History of Psychology (CHP) invites you to an eye-opening presentation titled “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Social Networking: Analyzing Your Net Presence" by Shelley Blundell on Tuesday, April 9, at 2 p.m. in the CHP reading room. A Q&A with light refreshments will follow.
Blundell, a native of Durban, South Africa, and a Ph.D. student at Kent State University, is studying information literacy development in undergraduate students enrolled in remedial coursework. Blundell's presentation demonstrates how professional social media use can give people a leg up in the job market, and includes real-life stories of the consequences of social media misuse. Equal parts education, thought-provocation, and humor, Blundell hopes that everyone who attends the presentation will learn more about how to manage their “net presences” effectively in the future.

Can you dance?

It doesn't matter if you can dance well, or not, as long as you can continue to dance the longest! The Ballroom Dance Club at the University of Akron is hosting a Dance Off Competition.

There are three different areas in which to compete:

Stamina - Who can dance the longest!
Skill - Who can dance the best!
No Skill - Who can dance the worst!

There is a trophy for the first place prize in each category!

The Stamina Contest consists of two different categories: Team and Individual. So grab your friends and come dance.

Greek life, come compete against others, dance the best (or the longest) and take the trophy back to your Greek house for display!

Ticket price is $3 in advance, $5 at the door.

Food and Drink will be available through out the night!

“A World on Autopilot?: Atheism, Evolution, Ethics, and Determinism”

August Berkshire will discuss the ramifications of a natural, deterministic universe without gods or free will, in which evolution shapes our ethics and actions. Is life worth living? How do we derive meaning and purpose in our lives? Can we avoid fatalism? What does this say about ethics, cooperation, altruism, praise, blame, responsibility, crime, punishment, rehabilitation, and revenge? Should we be optimistic or pessimistic abou...t the future?

August Berkshire is a past president of Minnesota Atheists, a past vice president of Atheist Alliance International, and on the speakers bureau for the national Secular Student Alliance. He has been an atheist activist since 1984 and is the author of numerous pamphlets. He is the owner of the ATHEIST license plate for Minnesota and is proud to be listed in the reference book “Who’s Who in Hell.”

Following the event we will have a special communion of reason at The Lockview with August Berkshire.

The Bernard Osher Reentry Scholarship for Adult Students was established by The Bernard Osher Foundation to provide assistance to adult learners who otherwise might not be able to afford a college education. It offers a financial incentive, as well as important recognition, for the most qualified students to work toward degree completion and, ultimately, fulfill their career objectives.

Scholarship applications are now being taken through April 12 for the 2013-14 academic year, says Laura Conley, director of UA Adult Focus, which provides a variety of academic support services for adult learners.

Students selected to be Osher Scholars will:

  • Be between 25 and 50 years of age
  • Have been away from school for a minimum of 5 years
  • Be working toward the completion of first baccalaureate degree
  • Be enrolled full-time (carrying at least 12 hours)
  • Have a minimum of one semester completed at The University of Akron with a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA.

Eligible adult learners can apply online or obtain an application in the UA Adult Focus Office in Schrank Hall North 260. For more information, visit the UA Adult Focus website or call 330-972-5793.
