Show your fall class schedule next week, and get a
T-shirt and chance at a book scholarship!
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University of AkronSchedule your fall classes before you leave for summer and get the best classes at the best times — before they fill up. You'll also stay on schedule to graduate on time, and you'll have a better chance at avoiding long gaps in your day.

Plus, you can win prizes — print your fall schedule and bring it to the Student Union piano lounge by Starbucks from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily between Monday, April 15 and Friday, April 19, and you'll receive a free "GettinClassy" t-shirt (as supplies last) and be entered in a drawing for book scholarship or an iPad mini.

There's no reason to wait. Sign up today and pay in August.

You don't need to meet with your adviser before scheduling, though your adviser is available to assist. (Those with an advising hold should see an adviser now, when wait times are less.)

And remember, you can always change your schedule, so there's no benefit to waiting to see your spring grades or to waiting for your fall work schedule.

  • April 15: Registration opens for freshmen
  • April 18: All students are able to register

Schedule your classes in My Akron.

Do you know how much you have borrowed in federal student loans, how much debt you owe, and what your credit report looks like?

Thirteen percent of students do not know how much they have borrowed in federal student loans. Don’t be one of the thirteen percent!

Go to www.nslds.gov and login with your federal pin number to see how much you have borrowed to date.

You can obtain a free annual credit report every 12 months at www.annualcreditreport.com to keep track of how much debt you owe, look at your payment history, and monitor for identity theft.

Learn how to control your personal debt and accomplish both your financial goals and educational goals, by making your personal debt work for you. This page can give you some insight about how to reach your financial goals.

A good credit history is important for future success. You should check these sites yearly to KNOW WHAT YOUR OWE!

Time to file or renew FAFSA
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now available for 2013-14.

Current students must renew the FAFSA each year to be considered for federal and need-based aid.

It is helpful to have student and parent tax returns completed when submitting the FAFSA, but you are encouraged to file estimates if your taxes are not available. It is easy to correct your FAFSA after your taxes have been filed.

All students are encouraged to complete the FAFSA, even if you do not consider yourself to be needy. All federal aid, including non-need-based loans, are based on the FAFSA, so filing the application is a good way to be prepared in case you need assistance.

The University's FAFSA school code is 003123.

Q: Hey UA, why don't you turn on the air conditioning?
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Answer: We've been enjoying the warmer temperatures, except for the fact that it seems even warmer indoors on campus.

If you have been wondering why UA can't simply flip the switch and let the magic of modern air conditioning cool our brows, here's the short answer…

UA uses a high-temperature hot water and chilled-water system to manage indoor temperatures in most campus buildings. It's a cost-effective way to heat and cool a lot of buildings in close proximity. When the shift from heating to cooling occurs around April 15 of every year, it takes the system about a week to adjust.

So why not make the switch early? There's a risk in shifting to air conditioning too soon, says Joe Gregor, who oversees campus maintenance. If a cold snap occurs after the switch (as is predicted this weekend), UA risks losing all the individual cooling coils in the buildings. The cost would be in the millions.

So Gregor and his team play the averages, choosing April 15 as the day to switch to cool air, and Oct. 15 to switch to heat, if the weather permits.

Today is the deadline for adult learners to apply for Osher Scholarship
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The Bernard Osher Reentry Scholarship for Adult Students was established by The Bernard Osher Foundation to provide assistance to adult learners who otherwise might not be able to afford a college education. It offers a financial incentive, as well as important recognition, for the most qualified students to work toward degree completion and, ultimately, fulfill their career objectives.

Scholarship applications are now being taken through April 12 for the 2013-14 academic year, says Laura Conley, director of UA Adult Focus, which provides a variety of academic support services for adult learners.

Students selected to be Osher Scholars will:

  • Be between 25 and 50 years of age
  • Have been away from school for a minimum of 5 years
  • Be working toward the completion of first baccalaureate degree
  • Be enrolled full-time (carrying at least 12 hours)
  • Have a minimum of one semester completed at The University of Akron with a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA.

Eligible adult learners can apply online or obtain an application in the UA Adult Focus Office in Schrank Hall North 260. For more information, visit the UA Adult Focus website or call 330-972-5793.

4 Ways to Stop Impulse Spending by Scott Gamm
Distinguishing between needs and wants is a tricky area of money management, largely hindered by impulse spending.

And most of us have succumbed to the notion of unplanned purchases, whether in the grocery store or walking down the aisles of our favorite clothing store. Right then and there, we see an item and think to ourselves, “I must have that,” without considering the costs or financial consequences of buying something we don’t need.

To keep your spending in check, here are four ways to stop impulse spending.

1. Stick to cash or debit card

You’ve probably heard this many times, but when you think about it, it makes total sense. Paying for items via credit card doesn’t allow us to psychologically realize exactly how much money we’re spending. There are no boundaries with credit cards (besides the actual credit limit, but many times we don’t remember what our credit limit is). The cashier swipes the card and gives it right back to you so you can keep spending. With cash or a debit card, you’re actually removing something tangible from your wallet or directly from your bank account, so your spending is limited to money you actually have on hand.

Shelling out five twenty dollar bills for a $100 pair of jeans just might make you reconsider that purchase, put the money back in your wallet, and get out of the store!

2. Avoid daily deal sites

Have you perused the deals on sites like Groupon and LivingSocial? The offers can be pretty tempting. From restaurants to trips to Europe to spa treatments, you can find a deal for just about everything on these social couponing sites.

Unless in you’re in the market for something specific – maybe a small kitchen appliance or a deal for a restaurant in your area – stay off these sites. Think about it: if you stumble upon a sweet deal on a gym membership, you might feel tempted to take advantage of the deal. What if you never went to the site – would joining a gym even be on your mind? See how these sites can exacerbate impulse spending?

3. Unsubscribe

Any time you subscribe to a store’s email list, they’re going to inundate your inbox with sales and special events to try and lure you into the store. So if you get an email that the store is offering 25% off dress shoes, but you already have three pairs, that email might prompt you to stop by the store to try and purchase yet another pair of shoes that you don’t need.

The solution? Unsubscribe from emails that will tempt you to spend money – it’s that simple.

4. Stay away from department store credit cards

Another tool that causes us to spend money is having a wallet filled with department store credit cards. With these cards, the retailer will give you a 10-15% discount when you buy something in the store using the card. This can be helpful if you’re about to start a new job and need to buy some dress clothes.

But now when you walk into the store, every item you want to buy will seem even more attractive and tempting thanks to this discount.

“A World on Autopilot?: Atheism, Evolution, Ethics, and Determinism”

August Berkshire will discuss the ramifications of a natural, deterministic universe without gods or free will, in which evolution shapes our ethics and actions. Is life worth living? How do we derive meaning and purpose in our lives? Can we avoid fatalism? What does this say about ethics, cooperation, altruism, praise, blame, responsibility, crime, punishment, rehabilitation, and revenge? Should we be optimistic or pessimistic abou...t the future?

August Berkshire is a past president of Minnesota Atheists, a past vice president of Atheist Alliance International, and on the speakers bureau for the national Secular Student Alliance. He has been an atheist activist since 1984 and is the author of numerous pamphlets. He is the owner of the ATHEIST license plate for Minnesota and is proud to be listed in the reference book “Who’s Who in Hell.”

Following the event we will have a special communion of reason at The Lockview with August Berkshire.
