If you think that it is okay to download movies, music and other copyrighted materials without paying for them through a legitimate on-line service, THINK AGAIN! Lawsuits are being filed this week under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1988 against individuals caught illegally downloading motion pictures. This is just one step that the Federal government is taking to stop illegal downloading and copyright infringement.

If your computer is part of a peer-to peer file sharing network like Kazaa you may be violating the law and the Student Code of Conduct.

Misuse of University computer and information recourses is not only a violation of federal law, but is also a violation of the Student Code of Conduct. If you are found to be in violation of the Student Code of Conduct you will be subject to disciplinary action including but not limited to a formal warning, disciplinary probation, temporary or permanent suspension of computer privilege and access to the UAnet, suspension or dismissal from The University of Akron.

Federal Laws that prohibit downloading can carry up to a $150,000 fine per motion picture illegally downloaded! Don’t risk your future to save the price of admission.

Freshman Summer Reading Book
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
For the past five years, the University College Summer Reading Selection Committee has selected one book that the entire incoming freshman class reads over the summer and uses in their first-semester courses.

The goals of the Summer Reading Program are to:
• Create a sense of community among incoming students
• Encourage students to read beyond textbooks
• Promote an introduction to the expectations of higher education
• Create a foundation for students to explore values and ethics
• Raise awareness and tolerance of intergenerational and cultural likenesses and differences
• Integrate an academic and social experience into the campus community

This year, we are asking for the undergraduates’ feedback on the two books chosen as the finalists for the Summer Reading Program. Please read the excerpts below from each book and provide your feedback to the committee by e-mailing orientation@uakron.edu by Wednesday, December 1. We appreciate your assistance! We will announce the 2005 Summer Reading Selection during spring semester.

The finalists are:

“Three Weeks with my Brother” by Nicholas Sparks (read excerpts at
