The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now available for 2013-14.

Current students must renew the FAFSA each year to be considered for federal and need-based aid.

It is helpful to have student and parent tax returns completed when submitting the FAFSA, but you are encouraged to file estimates if your taxes are not available. It is easy to correct your FAFSA after your taxes have been filed.

All students are encouraged to complete the FAFSA, even if you do not consider yourself to be needy. All federal aid, including non-need-based loans, are based on the FAFSA, so filing the application is a good way to be prepared in case you need assistance.

The University's FAFSA school code is 003123.

What have your experiences at UA been like — from classes to career-related opportunities to what you’ve enjoyed doing on campus? Now is your chance to tell us so that UA can continually improve the undergraduate experience inside and outside the classroom, and better prepare all of you for your future careers.

All freshman and senior students have received an individual link to the online National Survey of Student Engagement. It should take 10 to 20 minutes to complete. You have until the end of the semester to respond, so we hope you do.

Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) invites veterans, military service members, community and academic leaders, and members of the media to a special roundtable discussion on Monday, April 29, at 7 p.m. on the seventh floor of InfoCision Stadium. The University is focused on continually improving educational and career opportunities for veterans and military service members. UA's Military Veterans Association is hosting the event.

With post-9/11 veterans returning home to high rates of unemployment, it is essential that they be provided with greater opportunities to succeed. Streamlining the process for transferring military training and experience into college credits is one way to help. The roundtable discussion will focus on educational and career needs as well as other challenges facing returning veterans.

    Speakers, and their topics:

  • Pete Hegseth, CEO, Concerned Veterans for America, “Impact of federal budget cuts on U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and educational benefits.”

  • Sen. Frank LaRose, representing Ohio's District 27, “View of Ohio's support for veterans educational success.”

  • Dr. William M. (Mike) Sherman, UA's senior vice president, provost and chief operating officer, “Commitment to assisting improved degree attainment for military service members” and “Streamlined credit for military training and experience.”

  • Join us for light refreshments and networking. Visit the CVA website to RSVP and receive a free parking permit.

Concerned Veterans for America is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, 501(c)(4) organization that advocates for policies that will preserve the freedom and liberty we and our families so proudly fought and sacrificed to defend. Learn more about CVA.

Financial Network Analytics and Equity Portfolio Hedging Seminar April 26
    9:00 am - 9:00 am
    spacer image
    spacer image
    spacer image
    spacer image
Department of Mathematics is hosting a Job Orientation Talk with Eugene Neduv, Ph.D.

Financial Network Analytics (FNA) is a software application founded by Kimmo Soramaki, PhD. FNA allows exploration and monitoring of large-scale dependence structures of nancial assets. It uses network theory for reducing market or portfolio complexity with intuitive and interactive data visualizations. This allows enhanced identi cation of price driving themes and market dynamics, and the discovery of market
    anomalies.

For a portfolio of equities using FNA minimal trees construction based on Gower distance and Newman modularity we can obtain groups of highly correlated assets typically with a central node being an ETF that represents a particular industry sector. A portfolio of equities can be subsequently hedged using ETF for each cluster of stocks. Correlation dynamics changes with time and clusters evolve depending on the market conditions.

Biography: Eugene Neduv has graduated from Columbia University in 2002 with PhD degree in Mathematics. His doctoral thesis was a study of periodical solutions in Hamiltonian Systems using calculus of variations and symplectic geometry.

In 2005 after a few years of postdoctoral research in Brazil Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics and Germany Humbolt University Eugene has transitioned to nancial engineering in the role of Risk Management consultant at Imagine Software Trading system. Imagine Software Trading system provides front end real time nancial analytics combined with risk reporting and accounting functionalities. In 2010 Eugene has started to work as independent consultant in volatility trading and risk management. His clients include a few rms in Sao Paulo and New York.

Eugene also conducts mathematical research with colleagues in Barcelona and Rio de Janeiro. Currently Eugene is also a partner at a boutique risk consulting rm Red Swan Risk and is on board of directors of RDJ fund of funds that provides portfolio construction and allocation advise to o shore investors in Brazil.

The seminar will take place on Friday, April 26 at 9:00am in ZOOK 310.

Sign up for the Cultural Partner Program!

    spacer image
    spacer image
    spacer image
The program pairs international students and scholars with U.S. students, faculty, and staff to provide them with an opportunity to learn more about United States culture and practice speaking conversational English. Yet, the program is so much more - it is a way for both participants to learn more about another culture, exchange different perspectives, and make friendships across national borders which can last for years to come.

Through the Cultural Partner Program, international students and scholars and U.S. participants complete an on-line sign-up form and are paired off into partners. The partners can then meet regularly at a time they both decide on for conversation and sharing. This is a wonderful opportunity to make some new friends from around the world!

Sign up online now to participate! (May - August)
