There will be plenty of free entertainment and activities this summer in Downtown Akron.

And, for the second consecutive year, through the uArts Initiative — UA’s special, exclusive arrangement with the city of Akron — students, faculty and staff and can receive free admission to some of the city-sponsored events that require paid admission.

This summer, three concerts have been designated as “Friends and Family” events. To take advantage, students can show their Zip Cards to be admitted for free, along with up to three friends or family members.

Here are the “Friends and Family” events for summer 2013:

The concert season has already started on the Lock 3 stage. This Friday, May 31, will feature a “Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young experience” when Marrakesh Express takes the stage at 8:30 p.m. The only touring CSNY tribute band, the group will perform such favorites as “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” “Southern Cross” and “Teach Your Children.” At 7 p.m., the JiMiller Band, which offers a blend of blues, country jazz and rock, will perform. Admission is free.

On June 7, Bad Medicine, The Bon Jovi Tribute Show, will take the Lock 3 stage at 8:30 p.m. to perform some of the band’s most memorable songs, from “It’s My Life” to “Livin’ on a Prayer.” At 7 p.m., Stage Pass Live begins the evening with a range of rock songs, many of them well known to Michael Stanley Band fans, such as “Waste a Little Time On Me,” and “Nothings Gonna Change My Mind.” Admission is free.

To see the full calendar of Summer in the City events, visit uaevents.com. For more information on the venues and upcoming events, visit Summer in the City on the UA website.

And, don’t forget, through the uArts Initiative, students and UA employees have free admission to the Akron Art Museum.

University of Akron professor, Dr. Jim Rogers--an incredible man, husband, father, and friend--was as passionate about running as he was about showing love and care to his family, friends, and students. After a short but mighty battle with brain cancer, Dr. Rogers crossed his final finish line on January 14, 2013.

On September 28, 2013, several of Dr. Rogers' students will be paying homage to our fallen advisor, teacher, and hero, by running along side the all important blue line (for those not local to Akron, the blue line is the marathon race course that weaves its way all over town). In addition, we are raising money for the American Brain Tumor Association. Please feel free to donate to the cause AND, if you're local, come out and cheer us on!
