North Campus Parking Deck Update
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
A decorative stone on the west side of the North Campus Parking Deck (Lot 26) fell Thursday afternoon to the sidewalk below. No one was injured. Structural engineers have inspected the deck and declared it safe for use, and it is open right now.

As a safety precaution, the remaining decorative stone has been secured and will be removed from all sides of the deck starting early Friday. This will require the temporary closure of the Forge Street entrance on Friday; however, the Buchtel Avenue entrance will be open.

The work will continue over several days, requiring that one entrance (but never both) be closed at times. The campus community will be notified of the closures by e-mail. The information will also appear on the Parking Services Web site at http:www.uakron.edu/facilities/parking/

ZipLine Class Search Enhancement
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
To help you find courses more easily on ZipLine, the “meeting time range” selection has been enhanced to include specified starting and ending times for classes.

To search for classes, click on the ZipLine button located in the lower right corner of The University of Akron’s home page http://www.uakron.edu/. Click on the “Student” tab and select either “Academics” or “Course Catalog and Schedule” from the list of the left side. To begin, select “View Schedule of Classes.”

From a drop down, students can choose a “Starting At” or “Starting At or After” time. Also from a drop down, students can chose an “Ending At” or “Ending At or Before” time.

For example, if evening courses are desired, students can choose “Starting At or After” and enter a time of 5:00PM and then choose “Ending At or Before” and enter a time of 9:00PM. These specifications, along with other search criteria that may be chosen, would return a list of courses that would begin and end within the 5:00PM to 9:00PM timeframe. For time ranges greater than two hours in length, at least one additional criteria choice must be entered.

On-line tutorials are available at http://www.uakron.edu/its/learning/training/StudentSelfService.php#/ . You can print out the detailed instructions on how to search for courses from the same link.

For more information, contact the Help Desk at (330) 972-6888 or helpdesk@uakron.edu.

Some Parking Citations Dismissed
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
During the past two weeks, a number of students have received citations for parking on Level 3 (or on the ramp between Levels 2 and 3) of the North Campus Parking Deck between the hours of 6:00 p.m. Sunday and 6:00 a.m. Monday. The tickets were issued for Violation "03," which is for vehicles parked in a prohibited area as indicated by signs and/or markers.

Those citations will be dismissed by Parking Services, due to a lack of clarity in the instructional signs posted on Level 3 of the North Campus Parking Deck. If you received a citation that meets all of the above criteria, it will be voided automatically by Parking Services, and you may simply disregard and dispose of the ticket. You do not need to contact Parking Services to have the citation voided. If you already have paid a citation that meets all of the above criteria, please contact the Parking Office to receive a full refund. Contact information can be found on the Parking Services website at http://www.uakron.edu/parking/contact.php.

When contacting Parking Services, please provide your full name, student ID number, license plate number and the mailing address to which you would like the refund check sent.

Parking Services will be installing new signage in the North Campus Parking Deck – on Level 3 and on the ramp between Levels 2 and 3 – to indicate clearly which areas must be vacated weekly between the hours of 6:00 p.m. Sunday through 6:00 a.m. Monday. Those areas must be free of all vehicles during that period of time to accommodate essential deck maintenance, cleaning and safety inspections. Each week, any vehicles parked on Level 3 or on the ramp between Levels 2 and 3 of the North Campus Parking Deck between the hours of 6:00 p.m. Sunday through 6:00 a.m. Monday will be subject to ticketing and/or towing at the owner's expense.

If ever an unusual circumstance should require that your vehicle remain in that area of the deck during the designated weekend shutdown period, please contact the Parking Office at (330) 972-7213. We are eager to assist you as much as possible and to address any problems or concerns regarding parking on campus.

Parking Services sincerely appreciates your cooperation with our continuing efforts to keep this deck and all of our parking areas as safe, well-maintained and clean as possible.

Martin L. King Jr. Activities Fair Jan. 17
9:00 am - 3:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The life, legacy, and hope of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be celebrated on campus during the week of Jan. 17. The celebration will start with an activities fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 17 in the Student Union. The theme of the day is “Sharing the Dream.” The activities fair is a community-outreach event for children ages 5-18. Over the past four years, this event has received strong community support. Last year more than 600 people attended the fair.

In previous years organizations have participated by sponsoring some of the following:
1. What the Martin Luther King "means-to-me-wall"
2. Name badge with quotes
3. Face painting
4. Reading corner
5. Popcorn and treats
6. Coloring Contest
7. Biographic information on Martin Luther King, Jr.
8. Historical information on the Civil Rights Movement
9. Posters
10. Martin L. King, Jr. pictorial gallery or other visual displays

We are looking for activities and information that encourage non-violence philosophy, civic responsibility, respect for differences, caring community, importance of education/preparation, and the courage to do “right.” Of course these are only examples of what can be done, we encourage you to be creative. The most important thing is that your organization participates in Sharing of the Dream with those who may have not yet learned about the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

If you are interested in participating, contact:

Lathardus Goggins II, Associate Director
Office of Multicultural Development

The University of Akron's Zipmail is a compilation of University announcements for University students, sent each Friday unless circumstances require otherwise. The deadline for submissions to be considered by the University is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Zipmail is a University of Akron communication vehicle established for the benefit of The University of Akron to communicate with its students. Items will be accepted for publication only when the University is directly involved in the activity through participation, sponsorship, or partnership with one of its recognized organizations, colleges or departments. The University reserves the right to edit or to refuse to run any submission for any reason. Zipmail is not, nor is it intended to be, a public forum or a limited public forum. Questions about the implementation of this policy may be directed to zipmail@uakron.edu.

Items to be considered for inclusion in Zipmail should be sent through the Zipmail Event Submission Form. Due to the volume of submissions received, items will not run more than one time.

Questions about specific announcements should be made to the contact person/department/organization listed in the announcement.Your event will automatically be forwarded to the University's online calendar. The Zipmail Coordinator can be reached at x2837.
