Old School Soul will reverberate from the Lock 3 stage when Rose Royce and Brass Construction perform Saturday, June 29, beginning at 7 p.m. The concert will be the first of UA’s three “Friends and Family” events this summer. Lock 3 is located at 200 S. Main St.

Through the uArts Initiative — UA's special, exclusive arrangement with the city of Akron — students and employees can receive free admission to some of the city-sponsored events that require paid admission. Tickets for the June 29 concert are $10, but students, faculty and staff need only show their Zip Cards to be admitted for free, along with up to three friends or family members.

Taking the stage at 9 p.m. will be Rose Royce, a nine-member band best known for its classy funk and soul style and such hits as “Car Wash,” "I Wanna Get Next To You," "Wishing On A Star" and "Love Don't Live Here Anymore."

Brass Construction, based in Brooklyn, N.Y., will be on stage at 7 p.m. The group has been performing since the mid-70s and is known for its hard-hitting funk rhythms with guitars, horns and keyboards.

On Friday, June 28, a free concert begins at 7 p.m. at Lock 3 with Monica Robins and the Whiskey Kings, followed at 8:30 p.m. by Sharp Dressed Man, The ZZ Top Tribute.

With the visual aspects of their performance, the members of Sharp Dressed Man closely replicate the many outfits, hats and choreographed stage moves of ZZ Top as they cover such hits as "Sharp Dressed Man," "I’m Bad," "I’m Nationwide” and “Gimme all Your Lovin’.”

Robins, best known to Northeast Ohio audiences as WKYC-TV’s senior health correspondent, is the lead vocalist for the Whiskey Kings. The group performs around the region with a playlist of classic rock that includes everything from “Mustang Sally” to “Twist and Shout” and “Soul Man.”
