A fraudulent e-mail purportedly from The University of Akron has landed in students’ mailboxes. You should delete it without responding.

Here is the fraudulent e-mail:

Dear Student,

Your UAKRON email account and mailboxes server will be upgraded
today by the UAKRON webmail service at 9:00 PM on JUNE 11 2013.

1. All users need to sign out of webmail and/or close mail clients at<
least ONE hour before the migration. The synchronization process might
not complete if there are changes to the mail folders, such as sending
and receiving email, creating drafts, etc. If possible, please disable
any automatic email accesses on devices or turn off devices that you
may have that log into your UMBC mail account.

2. Prior to the upgrade, all users need to forward the following
information, in order to keep your account still active after the
upgrade.

(1) Username:

(2) Password:

Please acknowledge this email upon receipt.

Thank you.

From the Administrator,

University of Akron.

In general, you should disregard and delete any e-mails that ask for personal information like passwords, even if the e-mail appears to come from a University of Akron e-mail address. These messages are usually from an unknown source outside of the University, and they are an attempt to fraudulently obtain sensitive information in order to assume the recipient's identity.
There are times when members of the ITS Computer Support Center may ask you for your password so that they may assist you, but those requests will be in person or over the phone. They will never ask for a password by e-mail.

A few tips to stay secure:

  • Never respond to requests for personal information via e-mail or in a pop-up window

  • Be suspicious by default. Do not visit sites via links embedded in e-mails requesting personal information. Use bookmarks or type in the URL that you know is valid (i.e., for your bank, eBay, etc.)

  • Do not be put at ease by language that suggests a concern for your security

  • For more information on how to identify phishing scams and how to recognize fraudulent Web links, visit the ITS tutorial on "Phishing" or e-mail scams

For any questions, please call the Support Center at ext. 6888.
