Fundraiser to support placing UA-designed greenhouse in Jamaica July 20
7:00 pm - 11:00 pm

spacer image
Student Tim Madden has worked on the technology for hydroponic greenhouses with various UA and University Park Alliance partners, and other community-based organizations.

His nonprofit, Biodynamics Foundation, is an Akron-based private non-profit organization working with charities focused on locally grown fresh food and job creation in the greater Akron area, will host its "Jamaican Night Out" benefit concert and silent auction fund-raiser on Saturday, July 20 from 7 to 11 p.m. at Todaro's Party Center in Akron.

"Jamaican Night Out" seeks to raise $5,000 to help build a 15-foot-by-30-foot Biodynamics hydroponic greenhouse—powered by a Hydrogen Energy Systems generator—at a community for the hearing challenged in Kingston, Jamaica.

The greenhouses will incorporate commonly available materials combined with low-cost wireless hydroponic sensor technology developed and patented by Dr. Ajay Mahajan, associate dean for research at the College of Engineering, and commercialized by the University of Akron Research Foundation, headed by project executive Wil Hemker.

Biodynamics Foundation will also build a similar greenhouse in Akron this year to demonstrate the versatility and potentially worldwide impact of this technology.

The Hospitality Management program offers two-year degrees to students majoring in culinary arts, hotel/lodging management, hotel/lodging marketing and sales, or restaurant management. Students majoring in other disciplines may take courses in Hospitality Management. Various scholarships are available.

The Crystal Room Bistro is a commercially functioning restaurant operated during regular semesters by the students under the supervision of the faculty in the Hospitality Management Program.

For information about the program, visit the department's site, call: 330-972-7114 or email klu@uakron.edu.

Communion of Reason

The Lockview (Downtown Akron)
8:30pm-11:00pm

Every Wednesday Night at The Lockview, Akron area atheists, agnostics, humanists, and skeptics are urged to meet up with The Akron Atheists and The Secular Student Alliance at The University of Akron.

The Lockview is a cheap grilled cheese restaurant and extensive beer garden in downtown Akron Across from Lock 3 park on S. Main Street.

Communion of Reason is essentially a dinner night full of great discussion. You do not have to drink in order to enjoy Communion of Reason. In fact, some come only for the discussion and that is fine, too!
