UA will confer undergraduate and graduate degrees to the members of the Summer Class of 2013 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall. President Luis M. Proenza will deliver the commencement address at each ceremony.

UA will award approximately 1,248 to summer graduates.

Among the students receiving diplomas are Patricia Abboud and Edward J. Machek Jr., who are being singled out for an additional honor — speaking on behalf of their fellow classmates at commencement ceremonies.

Abboud, who will receive a B.S. in Nursing, summa cum laude, through the School of Nursing’s accelerated program, will be the student responder at the 10 a.m. ceremony. She came to UA after earning a B.A. in Anthropology as a premed student at the College of Wooster, and a Juris Doctor in 2005 at UA's School of Law. She intends to draw on all her degrees “to provide culturally compassionate care, and quality nursing care.” Read more.

Machek, an honors student who will be awarded a B.S. in Civil Engineering, magna cum laude, will be the student responder at the 2 p.m. ceremony. During his undergraduate years, he has been focused on helping others as a tutor and being a member of the concrete canoe and steel bridge design teams. He also has worked on research projects with professors Teresa Cutright and Stephen Duirk. Machek will begin work on his master’s degree here on Aug. 26, with the goal of becoming a professor himself. Read more.

Visit the Graduation website for details on the upcoming commencement ceremonies.

Across the University, the colleges and academic support units are enhancing efforts to increase student success. In support of these efforts, and to further integrate inclusive excellence into student success strategies, the Office of Inclusion & Equity recently relocated to Buchtel Hall 209.

The move reiterates the importance of integrating our core value of inclusive excellence into academic planning as the Office of Academic Affairs continues its focus on improving retention and graduation rates. The Office of Inclusion & Equity plays a key role in bringing diversity-related strategies to the colleges.

While several initiatives will be rolled out as the school year begins, two that deserve immediate focus are the restructuring of the Diversity Council to assist our colleges in developing diversity-related strategies and embedding accountability and representation in each college. And secondly, with an increased connection to the Office of Academic Affairs, additional support and outreach will be provided across campus to ensure diversity in hiring practices of faculty and staff.

Neill Byrnes, who looks and sounds like Aerosmith’s frontman, Steven Tyler, leads Draw The Line through such Aerosmith hits as “Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing,” “Livin On The Edge” and “Dream On.”

Bassel Almadani, a native of Northeast Ohio now based in Chicago, and his band play soul and jazz.
