Improperly stored gasoline and other ways to increase risk of fire
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
A group of students living off campus avoided disaster earlier this month by quickly dousing a fire that started in the basement of their house. The cause was improperly stored gasoline near the hot water heater.

It's a reminder that we all must be mindful of fire risks where we live.

If you are on campus, please refer to the Residence Hall Handbook for a list of the items that are prohibited in each residence hall. Items include:

  • Flammable fluids, such as gasoline and cleaning solvents
  • Candles, incense, or other objects with open flames
  • Cooking appliances with exposed heating coils, including toasters griddles and sandwich makers (Exchange Street Residence Hall is the exception, and only when cooking surfaces are well ventilated.)

There are even more precautions to remember when you live in off-campus housing. For example:

  • Be sure to have a working smoke detector and a fire extinguisher (and can reach it easily in an emergency)
  • Don't leave cooking unattended on a stove or other cooking appliance
  • Store flammable fluids or items (such as furniture) away from furnaces, hot water and space heaters
  • Don't overloaded electrical outlets

For more on fire prevention, view the University's annual fire safety report or visit Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety online.

Serving With Swipes! Aug. 30 - Dec. 13

spacer image
Do you have a meal plan that leaves you with too many meal swipes to use up at the end of the
week? Are you unsure of what to get, but don't want to waste you hard earned college funds? Well if
so, here is the solution!!!

Serving with Swipes is a non-profit student organization in which you can use your unused meal
swipes to donate food to the nearby food pantry. This is a great way to help those who are less
fortunate while also learning not to be wasteful.

Just use your extra meal swipes at the Zees stores to purchase nonperishable, canned, or boxed
foods. Drop them in the boxes located in the Zees stores at Exchange, Rob's Cafe, Quaker Square,
or the Student Union.

Serving with Swipes-A great way to give back to the community and help those who are less
fortunate.

Sign up for the Cultural Partner Program!
spacer image

spacer image
spacer image
The program pairs international students and scholars with U.S. students, faculty, and staff to provide them with an opportunity to learn more about United States culture and practice speaking conversational English. Yet, the program is so much more - it is a way for both participants to learn more about another culture, exchange different perspectives, and make friendships across national borders which can last for years to come.

Through the Cultural Partner Program, international students and scholars and U.S. participants complete an on-line sign-up form and are paired off into partners. The partners can then meet regularly at a time they both decide on for conversation and sharing. This is a wonderful opportunity to make some new friends from around the world!

Sign up online by September 5th to participate this fall!

As the semester starts, the spammers and scammers are sending out new emails designed to get at your personal information or spread a virus.

Be diligent. Disregard and delete any e-mails that ask for personal information like passwords, even if the e-mail appears to come from a University of Akron e-mail address. Such messages are usually from an unknown source outside of the University, and they are an attempt to fraudulently obtain sensitive information in order to assume your identity.

Here are a couple examples of bogus emails recently received on campus.

UA seeks smokers' cooperation Aug. 30
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
To comply with Ohio's Smoke-Free Workplace Law, UA forbids smoking in any enclosed area, including buildings, parking decks and University vehicles.

To comply with the requirements of this law and to help ensure that tobacco smoke does not enter any area in which smoking is prohibited, no smoking is permitted within 25 feet of an entranceway, window or ventilation system of any University building or enclosed area.

The law also requires that the University remove cigarette receptacles from areas on campus where smoking is prohibited. That means that smokers will have to fully extinguish their cigarettes when done and then place them in receptacles that are located at least 25 feet from the entrance of University buildings.

The University is asking all smokers to be mindful of the restrictions in and around buildings, to be cautious and courteous when discarding cigarettes and to refrain from removing cigarette receptacles from their intended locations.

More information is available on the Ohio Department of Health's Web site.

Office of Inclusion & Equity now located in Buchtel Hall Aug. 16

Across the University, the colleges and academic support units are enhancing efforts to increase student success. In support of these efforts, and to further integrate inclusive excellence into student success strategies, the Office of Inclusion & Equity recently relocated to Buchtel Hall 209.

The move reiterates the importance of integrating our core value of inclusive excellence into academic planning as the Office of Academic Affairs continues its focus on improving retention and graduation rates. The Office of Inclusion & Equity plays a key role in bringing diversity-related strategies to the colleges.

While several initiatives will be rolled out as the school year begins, two that deserve immediate focus are the restructuring of the Diversity Council to assist our colleges in developing diversity-related strategies and embedding accountability and representation in each college. And secondly, with an increased connection to the Office of Academic Affairs, additional support and outreach will be provided across campus to ensure diversity in hiring practices of faculty and staff.
